After a retirement party, 33 men go into a San Jose’ Mine to mine for gold and didn’t come out for 69 days.  After numerous warnings from Luis about the lack of safety in the mines, the owner ignores him and increases their quota.  Then, the heart of the mountain, that is twice the size of the Empire State building, breaks … trapping the miners inside.  The miners, their families, and the rescuers all struggle to keep going strong.  The miners see the depth of the owners negligence when they attempt to climb the ventilation shaft, eat, and call for help.  The miners struggle to say alive and keep their faith that the people above are coming for them.  The families struggle to find out what is going on with the miners, pregnancy, and each other.  The rescuers deal with misses, deviations, and how to get the miners out … if they are alive.

Although you do know how this will end, you don’t know how much all of this could have been avoided with proper safety mechanisms in place.  You will surely give a side-eye to the mining industry and praise its heroic miners.  Now understand that all 33 miners stories could not be told, but you are given the “media favorites” and the true pain of being stuck in that mine.  The movie screen does help with the cinematography to make you feel like you are in the mine, but this did not need to be in the theaters.  If you want to see it, go to a matinee.

I give this 3.5 out of 5 stars
