My Husband’s Double Life – Review

My Husband’s Double Life – Lifetime – 2 hours and 3 minutes

My Husband's Double Life

Sabrina is getting her life back together after she nearly died due to a miscarriage.  Even though she has a lot going on with a teenage daughter and an international traveling husband, she still wants to work full-time.  When Sabrina notices an unrecognized charged to their credit card, she believes it’s fraud and tells her husband Fletcher.  Fletcher insists on handling the matter after his flight to Paris for work the next day.  However, when Sabrina sees the charge came from a lingerie store in Paris, she decides to surprise Fletcher by coming to Paris and do some digging.  So Sabrina leaves their daughter Zoe behind to meet with Fletcher.  When Sabrina lands, she calls Fletcher and he is not happy to hear from her.  She doesn’t know about Fletcher’s double life and that having her in Paris will ruin all of his plans.

This movie is a lot to unpackage in a little time.  While you have an idea of what Fletcher is lying about, his lies are much deeper and deadlier that the title leads you to believe.  Although there are some twists, it’s just not enough to keep you interested.  You could miss some sections of this movie and still have an understanding of everything that is going on.  Now the saving grace for this movie is the last 30 minutes.  It gets brutal and cold and never let’s go.  Consider this movie the TV version of The Girl on The Train but set in a Paris hotel.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

I know who you are – Bridget

You should have stayed in New York – Fletcher

No. No, I’m not running from this. I need to make him pay – Sabrina

Killer Caregiver – Review

Killer Caregiver – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Killer Caregiver

Mariah has been confiding in her boss Graham for a while.  However, he has misunderstood her openness as affection.   When she tries to reject his advances, he ends up dead and she hurts her arm badly.  A few weeks later, Mariah’s doctor notices she has not healed at all.  Mariah explains that working a full-time job and helping her son with autism has left little to no room for herself.  Her doctor suggests Mariah should get a caregiver to help her around the house and with her physical therapy.   Although Mariah thinks its silly, she agrees to hire someone.  She finds Tess from an agency and everything works out.  But, Mariah starts failing at her job, disconnecting with her son, fighting with her husband, and getting physically worse.  Whilst Mariah has her suspicions, it will take one admission for Mariah to see the truth behind Tess’s lies.

This has the set up of a typical Lifetime movie, but there are a few things that set it apart.  First, you find out Tess’s motive in the first 30 minutes.  She doesn’t go into a long monologue at the end of the film to reveal her motive and plan.   Second, Mariah isn’t clueless.  When Tess starts to act weird, she acknowledges it and starts to investigate.  This movie does bring one annoying thing to light: tenant rights.  Once again, a Lifetime movie shows how a worker can become a permanent resident in your home.  This movie will make you laugh more than it will shock or surprise you.  So DVR and watch on a rainy day.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

I’m a working mom with an autistic child. There is only so much resting I can do – Mariah

Murdered at 17 – Review

Murdered at 17 – Lifetime – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Murdered at 17

After hitting her head in a cheerleading accident, Brooke suffers from Intermitted Explosive Disorder (IED).  She can easily erupt during a normal conversation, frustration, or argument.  She goes to therapy and takes medication to help.  So when she wakes up after a party to find a knife in her hand and her best friend Maddie dead beside her, she panics.  She believes she killed her best friend and fell asleep but she doesn’t remember anything.  So she grabs the knife and starts to clean up.  She goes home, throws away the evidence and tries to forget everything.  But the guilt is eating her alive.  She wants to tell someone but can’t muster up the courage.   Just when she thinks life can’t get any lower, her ex Jake calls.  He has all the evidence she threw away and if she wants them to remain hidden, she must marry him.  She knows he is unstable and controlling but she doesn’t want to go to jail.  Brooke must get a handle on her life but first, she must come clean.

This is a very tense movie that covers several mental illnesses.  While it doesn’t get preachy, it gives some information on IED but not a lot.  You can’t miss any of this movie because the first 10 minutes set up Jake’s character, while the next 20 set up Brooke’s character.  The next 30 is Brooke and Jake’s relationship and downfall.  Then the rest is uncovering what happened that night.  If you see the critical setups, the rest of the film can be background noise.  So DVR this one and you can fast forward when needed/wanted.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

That is evil.  And you sat right there and watched him do it – Jake

Should she be? – Brooke

You need to up your medication, seriously – Maddie

Room for Murder – Review

Room for Murder – Lifetime – 2 hours and 3 minutes

Room for Murder

Kristen comes home with a degree and no job.  She doesn’t know how long she will stay with her mom Moira.  But Moira doesn’t know where Kristen will sleep.  Moira rented out her room on Air BNB to Jake.   Kristen is concerned that her mom didn’t properly vet Jake and he could be dangerous.  Also, Kristen didn’t know her mom was having money problems so bad she would need a renter to make ends meet.  Moira confesses that she has gotten more clients in the hair salon but she can’t seem to get out of the red.  Kristen agrees to help with the finances, get a job, and find a place to sleep.  But after a woman is attacked, Kristen swears Jake must have done it.  Kristen believes Moira has a blind spot for Jake when she learns they are they are sleeping together.  So Kristen will ask her ex Ryan to help.  It will take a few bodies to straighten this one out.

This movie falls into the Lifetime rut of ‘trying to warn someone that their lover is a creep’ movie.   Each time Moira defends Jake, you will roll your eyes.  All the signs are there and she chooses to ignore them.  This movie is nothing new and you know the ending.  So keep it as background noise.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

Family Vanished – Review

Family Vanished – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Family Vanished

Brian, Lisa, and their daughter April return home from a dream vacation to find a nightmare.  Three intruders are waiting for them with guns and a plan.  And to make matters worse, the three intruders are one big happy family too.  Mike, Carol, and Marsha believe the family that robs together, stays together.  They think people like Brian and Lisa look down on them and it’s time to get even.  Carol read in the paper that Lisa received over $600,000 for her painting.  And they want that money.  Now the will hold the family hostage, beaten, and threaten them until they get every last dime.

This film is more annoying than nerve-racking.  You will yell at the TV because of the dumb mistakes Brian’s family makes each time they get a leg up on the criminals.  And hearing the criminals whine about their lives is even worse.  You don’t want anyone to win in this movie.  It tries to save itself by becoming a revenge movie, but it’s too late and too short-lived to be satisfying.  This movie can be skipped.

I give it 1.5 out of 5 stars

Killer Single Dad – Review

Killer Single Dad – Lifetime – 2 hours and 5 minutes

Killer Single Dad

After kicking her husband Matt to the curb for kissing his ex, Jennifer takes a bad fall down the steps.  She wakes up in the hospital room worried about her unborn child.  She discovers a good Samaritan called the police when he heard fighting and found her on the floor.  With her father’s police contacts, Jennifer found her good Samaritan named Garrett.  Garrett explains that he couldn’t imagine not helping after losing his wife and becoming a single dad of 2 girls.  While he has one daughter with him, he will get his other daughter when he settles in.  But he knows how hard this pregnancy will be alone, so he offers to help Jennifer when he can.  With Garrett giving 24-hour support, Matt’s pushed farther away.  But Garrett’s interest in Jennifer rubs Matt the wrong way.  He knows something isn’t right about Garrett and he is right.  The truth will leave Jennifer shattered and several dead.

So this is a 10 on the creepy scale.  But Lifetime movies have a great way of making you angry at the victim.  Jenifer is just too trusting of Garrett and never questions his stories.  You will find yourself saying “Come on. Really?” more than once during this movie.  Now a highlight is the nanny, Olivia.  She isn’t the sweet grandma she comes off to be.  She is funny and cunning.  Even if it’s not for long.  But the role reversal in parental need is a new twist to the plot.  This is a good movie to have in the background while doing other things.  But you have a good idea of how it’s going to end.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

If we can make amends, I will be happy to put in a good word with Jen for you – Garrett

You are a genius – Jennifer

What are you hiding in here – Olivia

Girl in the Bunker – Review

Girl in the Bunker – Lifetime – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Girl in the Bunker

Elizabeth Shoaf was a happy, loving older sister that took care of her brother after school.  So when she didn’t come home one day, her mother got a sick feeling.  At that moment, Mrs. Shoaf had no idea Elizabeth was in trouble.   Elizabeth decided to walk the quarter mile home instead of getting into a cramped car.  On the way home, Elizabeth was approached by a man impersonating a police officer.  He told Elizabeth she was being arrested for marijuana plants behind her house.  Then he put a device around her neck and told her it was a bomb in case she ran.  After they walked past her home and deeper in the woods, the man told her the truth.  His name was Vinson and he was kidnapping her.  He created an underground bunker with explosive devices and booby traps all around it.  If she tried to escape, he would kill her.  Elizabeth will be tortured, raped, and beaten over a period of 10 days with only her wits to help her.

Like I Am Elizabeth Smart and Girl in the Box, it’s easy to blame the victim.  But you should only villanize one person in this movie, Vinson.  He is the sick person that kidnapped Elizabeth because she was the easiest target.  She was alone and trusted authority.  You will quickly get angry at all the police missteps and Vinson’s accomplices.  As Elizabeth is trapped in the bunker, she never loses hope or strength.  She uses her brain to gain compassion and leave clues to outsmart her kidnapper.  This based on a true story movie did not have to happen, but this movie and Elizabeth’s ordeal can be a teaching tool for your children. Watch it with them and teach them how to stay safe.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

If that’s the attitude your gonna have maybe don’t bother coming home – Mrs. Shoaf

You need to calm down and accept the situation here – Vinson

Marrying Mr. Darcy – Review

Marrying Mr. Darcy – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Marrying Mr. Darcy

Elizabeth is floored when her boyfriend Donovan Darcy ask for her hand in marriage. She is excited to plan a small, outdoor wedding with all their close family and friends. She even decides to forgive Donovan’s Aunt Violet and ask her to attend the wedding. Donovan loves this idea, but Elizabeth regrets it instantly. Violet takes over the venue, date, guest list, food, flower, and even her dress. Soon Elizabeth doesn’t recognize herself or her wedding. She holds her tongue and keeps going until Violet tells her she will need to quit her job to be Mrs. Darcy. Newly hired Elizabeth panics and wonders if she is marrying her loving fiance Donovan or his job as Mr. Darcy.

This is the first Hallmark movie that will make you angry. As Violet takes over with “more suitable suggestions”, you will get frustrated.  But not only at Aunt Violet, but at Elizabeth’s lack of strength.  She just refuses to stand up for herself.  And it affects her engagement to Donovan.  While is infuriating to watch, it is a compromise some women and men make to appease their families.  Now like all Hallmark movies, this comes to a promising end, but with this promise comes the ultimate compromise.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Nightclub Secrets – Review

Nightclub Secrets – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Nightclub Secrets

Zoe Harrington happily teaches creative writing to her students and loves reading the classics.  However, her secret passion is for crime novels.  But when her sister Rachel commits suicide, she accepts the police findings.  Even when her alcoholic mother says otherwise,  Zoe believes her sister was unhappy.  However, when Zoe starts reading her sister’s journal and Rachel’s friend dies, Zoe decides to investigate.  Zoe believes the best place to start is Rachel’s job at a nightclub.  There, Rachel was a bottle girl who sold expensive bottles of alcohol for a 20% cut.  At first, Zoe is ignored but when she uses her sister tips written in the journal, she gets the job.  Soon, she is the #1 bottle girl and #1 target.

Talk about a slow burn. This movie sizzles for an hour and a half about the mystery of Rachel suicide, then it really gets going with a big reveal. This reveal will expose multiple crime syndicates going on in the nightclub. Although the perpetrator is exposed early in the movie, the motives and accomplices are not. So stick with this movie for a surprising and strong ending.

Killer Ending

Agatha has survived an abusive husband to become a semi-famous mystery writer.  As she writes her latest novel, she drops her daughter off at college, gets an assistant, and threatens her manager.  When Agatha can’t get in touch with her daughter Sarah for a few days, her assistant Caroline takes matters into her own hands.  Caroline goes to Sarah’s dorm room to find broken glass, an upside down heart on the wall, and Sarah’s ex Jack strung up.  She calls Agatha to report her findings and Agatha is floored.  The crime scene is just like the one in her manuscript, her unpublished manuscript.  She realizes someone has hacked into her computer and following her unpublished book in real time with her daughter as the victim.  Agatha tries to use this knowledge to ensure her daughter safety by typing in lines about feeding the victim.  But when someone else starts typing, Agatha and possibly Sarah are lost.

“Just call the cops” is a phrase you will be screaming from the beginning.  Or “write he will return you daughter home alive” is something else you may say.  But give this movie a chance.  It has a lot of Red Herring and not-so-dumb cops.  However, as the mystery of her daughter starts up, the mystery of her husband death starts to turn its ugly head.  This will leave you truly questioning everything going on in the movie.  That is the true mystery.

This is one of those most unintentionally funny film Hallmark has to offer.  It is funny without making fun of Sara and her family’s commoner ways.  They are just being nice and welcoming in a frosty situation.  It’s so easy to believe this is a true love story.  The lead couple is amazingly connected and feed off of each other.  This is one to watch.  So get your tea warm, your DVR ready, and 2 hours of quiet to yourself.  Enjoy.

Psycho Ex-Girlfriend – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Psycho Ex-Girlfriend

Kara works in a bar but does community service as a therapist for her local church.  One day Isabelle walks into her office and states that she is tired of being the good girl.  She misses her days of sex, drugs, and rock & roll with her ex-boyfriend.   Kara warns Isabelle that communicating with anyone from her past will cause issues with her sobriety.  But Isabelle just doesn’t care.  During Kara’s shift with her fiance Tyler, Kara enquires how Tyler knows the chief of police.  Tyler admits he used to date his daughter Elle.  When Elle sits down, Kara recognizes Elle as her patient Isabelle.  Kara decides to keep treating Elle but things get complicated when Elle convinces Tyler’s boss to let her work at the bar.  Now, the couple sees Elle day and night.  And believe that she will make her presence known: one dead animal at a time.

While this movie’s plot thickens in the first 20 minutes, it stays on a slow fizzle from that point on. As you watch, you will determine that the couple should be more proactive instead of reactive.  They need to block numbers, change numbers, find a new job, and even move.  They just don’t do anything for too long and allow Elle to have power over their relationship.  This movie has a strong setup, the lack of follow-through weakens its potential.  This movie is background noise for a busy day.

Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance

Meghan Markle has been outspoken since she was a child and she has used that passion to become an actress on the T.V. show Suits.  So when her blind date shows up 40 minutes late, she doesn’t want compliments, just apologies.  And this Prince puts on the charm because he is a Prince.  Her blind date is HRH Prince Harry of Wales.  With a divorce and several bad dates, Meghan is not hopeful.  And after being used for celebrity status, Prince Harry is not hopeful as well.  But after a date that lasted all night long, these two make a vow to see each other again.  As Prince Harry watches Suits and Meghan reads up on Princess Diana, Prince Harry takes Meghan on a special date.  A date to one of his places in the world: Botswana.  As the two live in their own bubble, they fall deeper in love.  But when the bubble pops, can the pair make it?

This love story is a true fairy tale that went against all the rules.  No more long engagements, no more royals only, and no more barriers.  You will see these two connect through the feeling of being outsiders.  Meghan as a biracial child and Prince Harry as a child who’s red hair made people question his paternity.  While Prince Harry and Meghan are used to cameras, they will come under scrutiny like never before.  While Prince Harry does everything to keep Meghan save from paparazzi and bigots, Meghan has to fight an inner battle between tradition and modernism.  Even though you know the ending, this movie will tug at your heartstrings.  And don’t worry, you will get your chicken proposal.

A Daughter's Revenge

Elle developed a tight bond with her mother after her father left.  And that bond continued to get stronger when her mother married David.  Her mother confided that she believed David was cheating on her.  After confronting and arguing with David, Elle’s mom kills herself.  Elle’s rage turns into a thirst for revenge.  She wants David to die but doesn’t want to go to jail.  She needs to be able to pin the crime on someone else.  She gets the opportunity when she realizes her friend Anna is in jail for a DUI.  With a delusional vision of her mother, Elle decides to keep her friends close and her enemies closer.  Elle convinces her stepdad to hire Anna and she offers Anna a place to say.  Anna believes Elle and her family is a godsend.  But Anna will see how evil Elle can truly be.

When smart girls go crazy and kill.  This movie sets itself apart because you see Elle set up Anna each step of the way.  Normally the setup is played in flashbacks when the manipulation is explained.  You see the spiked drink, journal entries, and changed calendars.  You get to see Elle’s descent into madness.  This is one Lifetime movie that you root for the victim and not the crazy person to keep yourself entertained.  Also, Elle didn’t need to be high tech to set Anna up.  Just resourceful and cunning.  So DVR and watch when you have time.

Darrow and Darrow: In The Key of Murder

Miles and Claire decides to not “talk shop” for a week to focus on their relationship outside of the courtroom.  This pact is broken on their first date when Miles’s sister Pheobe is arrested for killing her producer Terry.  With gunshot residue on her hands, motive, and a witness to the murder via telephone call, it seems like Pheobe will be in jail for a long time. Even with all the evidence, Claire believes Pheobe didn’t commit the crime.  Now Miles and Claire will be on the same side to free his sister and find the real killer.

As evidence starts mounting up, it’s hard for even the seasoned viewer to believe in Pheobe’s innocence.  But with an unlikeable victim, it’s easy to see how anyone could have shot him.  And that’s what gives the story its bark.  Now to understand the reasoning behind the murder, you must pay full attention to the movie.  It’ssuspensefull and keeps you hooked.  Also, the subplots are strong and touching .

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Dangerous Seduction – Review

Dangerous Seduction – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Dangerous Seduction

Posey – a medical artist – is looking for some excitement to help build up her confidence.  She hopes the confidence boost will give her to courage land her dream job.  While her fiance, Tom, wants to help, he just misses the mark.  Posey tries to dress sexy, tries experimenting in bed, and even tries visualizing herself with confidence but nothing works.  Her cousin and best friend Laura thinks her only problem is Tom.  So when Posey meets a sexy stranger named Jack, she is carefully intrigued.  She considers cheating on Tom but continues to flirt with the razor’s edge.  And to make matters worse, a few women she has had brief contact with, died.  Posey has no idea that Jack is working with Stella and Charlie to kidnap these women for a man named Alex.  Alex turns them into his personal sex slaves and kills them.  To make matter worse, Stella believes that Alex will like Posey, so she sent Jack to kidnap her.  Now Jack is slowly seducing Posey to make her Alex’s next victim.

It takes a while for this movie to make its point.  By being so mysterious, you wonder when “it” will happen.  You will start to lose interest as the storylines weave into each other.  This movie should have started with a woman being kidnapped after talking to Jack.  Then you would feel a sense of urgency when Posey met Jack.  This movie is background noise with an interesting last 20 minutes.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

So how was it for you – Posey

She looks scared. I like that. – Stella

The Beach House – Review

The Beach House – Hallmark – 1 hour and 48 minutes

The Beach House

Caretta had returned to her hometown to visit her family.  On the ride there, she gets the bad news that she has been fired.  Caretta decides to keep the news from her mother Lovie in order to keep the visit pleasant.  But Caretta is turned on her head to discover that Lovie’s given the main house to her son Palmer and she has an unwed, pregnant woman living with her at the beach house.  While Caretta has secrets, Palmer and Lovie are keeping some from her.  Soon all their secrets will come to head and The Beach House will be in the center.  The Beach House has survived a hurricane, neglect, and a marriage, but can it survive one more summer with this family.

Based on The Beach House by Mary Alice Monroe, this is a sweet, wholesome movie that covers southern female stereotypes, forgiveness, strength, and turtles.  It handles the topics the only way Hallmark can – with class.  However, this movie feels like a kick-off for the book series’s film adaptations. It just seems to go flat and does not solve any of the problems presented in the story.  So hold off on this movie until the next one comes out.  Then watch then back to back.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

Anything to avoid my turtles – Lovie

You know nothing ever changes around her. Not the weather, not even accents – Palmer

It looks like paradise can use a little sprucing up – Caretta
