Girl in the Coffin – Review

Girl in the Coffin – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Jasmine and Kelvin sit with Bill, a funeral director, to discuss arrangements for her mother, Carol. Jasmine appreciated the time and care he took with Carol and is ready to start the next step. Bill will cremate Carol’s body in a few days and return the remains to Jasmine. She will use them to plant flowers in Carol’s honor. Jasmine and Kelvin return to Carol’s home, and Jasmine falls into a depression.

Days later, Kelvin encourages Jasmine to seek help after she quit her job. However, she begs him to leave. Kelvin makes her promise to call him every day. He returns home while Jasmine falls deeper into agony. Jasmine finds her mother’s favorite scarf. She returns to the funeral home to pick out an urn and collect Carol’s ashes.

After Jasmine selects an urn, she and Bill strike up a conversation and confide in each other. Bill asks if Jasmine wants to help put the ashes in the urn. He thinks it will help her get closure. Jasmine goes downstairs to the embalming room, and she jumps when she sees a body there. Something about Bill makes her uncomfortable. Jasmine makes an excuse and runs upstairs. However, Bill sneaks behind her and covers her nose and mouth with chloroform. Jasmine wakes up in a coffin and bangs the lid for Bill to let her out. He returns later and opens the lid. He doesn’t plan to let her go because he likes her. Also, he dumped her items into the river. People will assume she ended her life because she was depressed. If they aren’t talking, Bill will drug her and keep her in the coffin until he’s ready. Jasmine must find a way out before Bill’s thoughts turn sinister.

This film doesn’t take long to hook you into the story. The writers put Jasmine in the coffin before the first commercial break. However, you don’t understand Bill’s motives until the halfway mark. This plot leans into the creepy factor while Kelvin and the detective search for clues. The story doesn’t have any twists. And the ending felt flat and uninspired. The tension relied on Bill being weird, nothing more. The music and set told his story better than the script. Since this wasn’t an ‘inspired by real events’ story, it built up to nothing special. This movie has a steady climb of disturbing, but that’s it.

Nowhere Left to Hide – Review

Nowhere Left to Hide – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Teddi is a seamstress living in Ocean Ridge. She works by word of mouth and operates a cash-only business. Teddi overhears Amy arguing with her daughter, Farrah, about a dress. Amy damaged the dress when she washed it. Teddi interjects, offering to fix the dress for free. Teddi takes it to her studio and makes the alterations. Then, she hands it to Farrah. She can’t believe Teddi fixed it. She takes a photo of her and Teddi, and Teddi snaps at her. She pleads with Farrah not to post the image. Farrah agrees, and Teddi leaves. Amy follows Teddi and asks for Teddi’s background. However, Teddi stays mum. Amy says everyone in town is running from something. She won’t pressure Teddi but offers to be there when she needs to talk. Amy’s correct. Teddi is hiding a secret. Her name is Rochelle. She faked her death to escape her abusive husband, Daniel, after he threatened to kill her sister, Kenzie, if Rochelle left. That was three months ago, and Teddi has stayed off the grid. She believes it’s the only way to stay safe. She would be right. However, Farrah posted the picture, tagged with the location, without Teddi’s permission. Daniel saw it online using AI technology. He will stop at nothing to gain control of his wife and bring her home.

The film opens with Daniel threatening Rochelle after a client’s son buys her flowers. Then, the title card states it’s three months later. Rochelle is now Teddi, and she lives her life in the shadows. The script doesn’t spend the entire movie tracking Daniel as Teddi lives a quiet life. Instead, he finds her within the first hour and wreaks havoc on her life. Then, the plot takes a turn when Teddi goes to the police for help. This doesn’t provide tension because the detective will make you too angry to care. It will be difficult to believe someone could treat Teddi this way unless you watched A Toxic Love Story. This movie has a lot of moving parts with annoying Lifetime cops and a loud backing track. This film feels far-fetched, but sadly, it’s possible. The acting is a bit overdone, but the plot will stoke your anger for 2 hours.

He’ll Never Find Me – Review

He’ll Never Find Me – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Halle shops at a local farmers’ market when her friend, Bree, sees a man named Mark checking Halle out. Bree tells Halle that Mark is a great guy who owns a family farm. Halle’s unsure because she has bad luck with men before. Mark approaches her after retrieving her hat from the ground. He asks her out, and against her better judgment, Halle says yes. Soon, she and Mark are living together on his farm. And she is quickly learning the ropes.
 
Halle walks toward a fair with Bree, and a snake bites Bree. Halle quickly gets into action to rush Bree to the hospital. A bystander posts the video online, and it goes viral. Days later, reporters contact Halle for an interview, but she lies and turns them down. Mark wants to know why, but she snaps at him. Halle checks the farm’s bank accounts and sees that Mark is losing money. Mark tells her he has a plan. Since her video went viral, people have called requesting to stay on the property. He wants to turn the spare house into an Airbnb. Halle says no. She doesn’t want strangers in her home. But that’s a lie. She’s afraid it will put her on her husband’s radar. Years ago, Halle escaped Officer Cole’s abuse by faking her death. And her fears are right. He saw her viral video and will stop at nothing to track her down. Will Cole find her?
 
This film’s pacing is slow after the first murder. The plot spends its time holding on to Halle’s deception. She feels more like a nagging girlfriend trying to take over property that doesn’t belong to her. Viewers will feel bad for Mark and fear he’s moving too fast. Viewers know Cole is coming, but it takes too long. However, the backing track amplifies the audience’s curiosity, fear, and suspicion. And the setting offers excellent foreshadowing. This movie has an entertaining beginning and conclusion, but it takes too long to get to the point.

Snowbound for the Holidays – Review

Snowbound for the Holidays – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Cassidy attempts to implement changes to her mother’s hotel, but Joanne says they aren’t cost-effective. She desires to be VP of Operations, but Joanne doesn’t think she’s ready. Then, Joanne gets a call. A friend of hers, Sam, owns a lodge with his son-in-law, Trey. While they own the lodge, they rent the ski slope from the city. However, the price has gone up, and they can’t afford it. Sam wants to sell the land rights to their rival, hotel owner Aston, but Trey doesn’t. Joanne desires to help them, but she has other business obligations. Cassidy offers to help to prove herself. She will go to Linden Lodge before their Caribbean Christmas Vacation and close the deal. Joanne agrees.
 
Cassidy arrives at the property and meets Trey’s daughter, Lilly. Trey offers to help her with her bags. She assumes he’s the bellhop and tips him. Later, Sam privately informs Trey that an assessor will come by to read through their deal. He wants Trey to give it a chance. Trey doesn’t want to sell because it’s the only home Lilly has ever known, it’s where he met his late wife, and the staff is like family. As they argue about the future, the lights go out, and everyone wants to know what’s going on. Cassidy hides in the shadows during the conversation and overhears Sam calling Trey by his name. She apologizes and introduces herself. Sam greets her by her last name, and Trey knows why she’s there. Sam tells Trey to show her the ins and outs of the property so she can read through Asherton’s proposal with clear eyes. He agrees, but he will never settle. Cassidy will get to know the property, the staff, and the guests to gain Trey’s trust. But will she gain his heart while making the deal?
 
This film has cozy Christmas elements of Christmas trees, winter events, and personalized cocoa mugs. But Christmas is a background character for winter because that’s what Cassidy is fighting. The film offers meet-cutes and potential enemies, who are working for a common goal. Also, Trey is modern-phobic, while Cassidy wants to leap into the future. The title is misleading because the snow doesn’t trap anyone in the lodge, just love and a festival. The movie eases into these clichés without making them obvious. The leads have great chemistry. However, it’s Cassidy’s connection to Lilly that will make your heart sing. She’s not trying to be her mother, but embracing Lilly’s ideas. The twist evolved over time. With their difference of opinion, it was only a matter of time before a misunderstanding put the deal and their relationship in jeopardy. Both leads grow and become better people by working together. This film is a charming winter movie. However, it shouldn’t take space on your DVR.
