Fahrenheit 451 – HBO – 1 hour and 40 minutes

Fahrenheit 451

Master Trooper Guy Montag is a star fireman for District 9.  With the guidance of his Captain Beatty, he makes a public spectacle of eels and erases them for their crimes.  The crime of reading or having books, listening to or playing music, or looking at art.  In District 9, the only allowable material is the Bible, Moby Dick, and the ministries (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  All other books, music, or art will be burned at 451 degrees Fahrenheit.  The leaders believe that books are graffiti that will pollute the mind causing the person to become insane.  While Beatty strongly enforces this practice, he still keeps a paper and pencil hidden at home.  He writes his thoughts and burns them.  Montag is starting to have flashes of his childhood but when Clarisse (a convicted eel) tells him that past firemen put out fires, he doesn’t believe her.  During a bust with Clarisse information, Montag and Beatty find an old woman with hundreds of books.  Beatty tells Montag to read one.  Meanwhile, he tells Montag a 2nd civil war almost started because of too much information and not enough attention to detail.  Books were the enemy.  Montag quietly hides a book called Notes from Underground and arrest the old woman (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Later she refuses to move and sets herself on fire with her last word being OMNIS.  Montag is compelled to find out the truth about OMNIS and why a woman would kill herself over books.

Based on the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, this movie serves as a warning to the future (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  With days of fake posting, headline-only reading, miscommunication, and book banning, it’s easy to see how this world is possible.  And once the books were gone, history could be re-written to hide the truth. This is the type of movie that makes you want to read the book to learn what details were removed or changed.  With strong visuals and a dynamic cast, this is a great starting point for this production company.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

You too pretty anyway – Captain Beatty

You dream about hiding from me, you better wake up and apologize – Montag

How come he always makes you wait outside like a little dog – Clarisse

Psycho Ex-Girlfriend – Review

Psycho Ex-Girlfriend – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Psycho Ex-Girlfriend

Kara works in a bar but does community service as a therapist for her local church.  One day Isabelle walks into her office and states that she is tired of being the good girl.  She misses her days of sex, drugs, and rock & roll with her ex-boyfriend.   Kara warns Isabelle that communicating with anyone from her past will cause issues with her sobriety.  But Isabelle just doesn’t care.  During Kara’s shift with her fiance Tyler, Kara enquires how Tyler knows the chief of police.  Tyler admits he used to date his daughter Elle.  When Elle sits down, Kara recognizes Elle as her patient Isabelle.  Kara decides to keep treating Elle but things get complicated when Elle convinces Tyler’s boss to let her work at the bar.  Now, the couple sees Elle day and night.  And believe that she will make her presence known: one dead animal at a time.

While this movie’s plot thickens in the first 20 minutes, it stays on a slow fizzle from that point on. As you watch, you will determine that the couple should be more proactive instead of reactive.  They need to block numbers, change numbers, find a new job, and even move.  They just don’t do anything for too long and allow Elle to have power over their relationship.  This movie has a strong setup, the lack of follow-through weakens its potential.  This movie is background noise for a busy day.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance – Review

Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance – Lifetime – 2 hours and 30 minutes

Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance

Meghan Markle has been outspoken since she was a child and she has used that passion to become an actress on the T.V. show Suits.  So when her blind date shows up 40 minutes late, she doesn’t want compliments, just apologies.  And this Prince puts on the charm because he is a Prince.  Her blind date is HRH Prince Harry of Wales.  With a divorce and several bad dates, Meghan is not hopeful.  And after being used for celebrity status, Prince Harry is not hopeful as well.  But after a date that lasted all night long, these two make a vow to see each other again.  As Prince Harry watches Suits and Meghan reads up on Princess Diana, Prince Harry takes Meghan on a special date.  A date to one of his places in the world: Botswana.  As the two live in their own bubble, they fall deeper in love.  But when the bubble pops, can the pair make it?

This love story is a true fairy tale that went against all the rules.  No more long engagements, no more royals only, and no more barriers.  You will see these two connect through the feeling of being outsiders.  Meghan as a biracial child and Prince Harry as a child who’s red hair made people question his paternity.  While Prince Harry and Meghan are used to cameras, they will come under scrutiny like never before.  While Prince Harry does everything to keep Meghan save from paparazzi and bigots, Meghan has to fight an inner battle between tradition and modernism.  Even though you know the ending, this movie will tug at your heartstrings.  And don’t worry, you will get your chicken proposal.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

I don’t care about that. I only care about one thing. Is he nice? – Meghan

A Daughter’s Revenge – Review

A Daughter’s Revenge – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

A Daughter's Revenge

Elle developed a tight bond with her mother after her father left.  And that bond continued to get stronger when her mother married David.  Her mother confided that she believed David was cheating on her.  After confronting and arguing with David, Elle’s mom kills herself.  Elle’s rage turns into a thirst for revenge.  She wants David to die but doesn’t want to go to jail.  She needs to be able to pin the crime on someone else.  She gets the opportunity when she realizes her friend Anna is in jail for a DUI.  With a delusional vision of her mother, Elle decides to keep her friends close and her enemies closer.  Elle convinces her stepdad to hire Anna and she offers Anna a place to say.  Anna believes Elle and her family is a godsend.  But Anna will see how evil Elle can truly be.

When smart girls go crazy and kill.  This movie sets itself apart because you see Elle set up Anna each step of the way.  Normally the setup is played in flashbacks when the manipulation is explained.  You see the spiked drink, journal entries, and changed calendars.  You get to see Elle’s descent into madness.  This is one Lifetime movie that you root for the victim and not the crazy person to keep yourself entertained.  Also, Elle didn’t need to be high tech to set Anna up.  Just resourceful and cunning.  So DVR and watch when you have time.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

I’m on my own – Anna

It takes a while for this movie to make its point.  By being so mysterious, you wonder when “it” will happen.  You will start to lose interest as the storylines weave into each other.  This movie should have started with a woman being kidnapped after talking to Jack.  Then you would feel a sense of urgency when Posey met Jack.  This movie is background noise with an interesting last 20 minutes.

The Beach House – Hallmark – 1 hour and 48 minutes

The Beach House

Caretta had returned to her hometown to visit her family.  On the ride there, she gets the bad news that she has been fired.  Caretta decides to keep the news from her mother Lovie in order to keep the visit pleasant.  But Caretta is turned on her head to discover that Lovie’s given the main house to her son Palmer and she has an unwed, pregnant woman living with her at the beach house.  While Caretta has secrets, Palmer and Lovie are keeping some from her.  Soon all their secrets will come to head and The Beach House will be in the center.  The Beach House has survived a hurricane, neglect, and a marriage, but can it survive one more summer with this family.

Based on The Beach House by Mary Alice Monroe, this is a sweet, wholesome movie that covers southern female stereotypes, forgiveness, strength, and turtles.  It handles the topics the only way Hallmark can – with class.  However, this movie feels like a kick-off for the book series’s film adaptations. It just seems to go flat and does not solve any of the problems presented in the story.  So hold off on this movie until the next one comes out.  Then watch then back to back.

Brent is ready to marry Cameron.  A woman he has only known for a few months.  He bends over backward to impress her mother Nicole but just can’t win her over.  After seeing her frustration, Brent jokes about eloping and Cameron agrees.  Even though he knows Nicole will not be happy with the marriage, is girlfriend Alexa will be furious.  Especially since he got married on their anniversary.  Alexa did her research and learned that Cameron would inherit $3 million on her 25th birthday.  So, if she gets married and dies, her husband would get everything.  And Alexa will make Brent do anything to get her hands on Cameron’s money.  However, Alexa is starting to worry that Brent’s acting is becoming real and she is about to lose everything.  Including Brent.

Get ready to scream at Cameron.  This character makes the typical Lifetime mistakes.  Trusting to soon, talking about an inheritance, and arguing with evidence.  Even close to death, she still defends Brent.  It’s just too much to take at times.  I understand that she has to be a bit trusting.  But there is a thin line between trusting and dumb.  So watch this for Alexa and it will be more enjoyable.

I Killed My BFF: The Preacher's Daughter

With her partying days behind her, Lily is on God’s path.  Her father, who is a preacher, gives his full support to her lifestyle change.  Every moment in Lily’s life seems in order until her mother commits suicide.  Her twin brother Jason can’t be in the house now and starts partying more than usual.  One morning he brings home a woman named Rae.  Rae is trying to be good.  But in the past, she was so reckless that her daughter Scarlet left to live with her boyfriend’s family.  With Rae around, Lily starts to reminisce about her past and starts to let loose.  She starts drinking, taking pills, and arguing with her dad.  But when Jason dies with heroin in his system, Lily blames Rae.  Lily decides she should remove the demon out her life and use Scarlet to do it.

Be prepared, this story is a slow burner.  It spends more time on the relationship between Lily and her family before she descends into madness.  By doing this you get a sense of the broken bond within the family.  While religion plays a role in Lily’s fall, it could be a just a kink in the chain of perfection.  Everything Lily does, whether its partying or praying, is done perfectly.  The moment that perfection is questioned, she snaps.  And to add to the madness, Lily does the classic Lifetime stare at the end.  So while you don’t have to cancel plans to watch, you need to give this story your full attention.

He continues her she will die within a year without the treatment, but her tumor is inoperable and chemo will only prolong her life by a few months.    After seeing her mother suffer through chemo treatments, Ivy wants to forgo them.  He then gives her medication to help ease her symptoms.  Ivy hides the truth from her friends in order to save them pain.  A few days later, Dr. Laurie tells Ivy about an experimental drug that will cost a lot of money.  Ivy is willing to pay whatever he wants to get in the trial and start the treatment.  But Ivy doesn’t know that Dr. Laurie is fighting a malpractice suit for giving a patient unnecessary medication, extorting money, and almost killing her.  Ivy is risking her life and money to save her life.

Lloyd is happy to tell his mother about his date with his co-worker Megan.  He thinks she is amazing and held strong after her fiance was killed.  Also, she has given him tips on how to win while being an introvert and ‘game-less’.  But when he hears she is moving, his mother tells him to act and show this girl he truly loves her.  The only obstacle is Megan has no idea Lloyd likes her.  She has put him in the friend zone and started dating.  As people around her die, she still trusts him.  What will it take for her to see Lloyd’s truth?

This movie should be titled ‘Danger in the Friend Zone’ as Lloyd stalks Megan’s every move on social media and with a camera.  With all this stalking, its the encouragement calls from this mother that leaves a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach.  The first 1.5 hours is a slow burn, the last 30 minutes are action-packed.  So use this movie as background noise until the last 30 minutes.  Then give it your full attention.

Peter is a widowed, divorce attorney with a daughter named Julie.  He is happy spending time with her and working.  However, Julie wants him to start dating and ask him to sign up for a dating site.  After some time he meets Alexis.  Alexis is a strong, smart surgent with bad luck in the dating scene.  However, she and Peter feel the spark immediately and end up in bed.  Peter doesn’t know that Alexis has been watching their family for years and has stalked her way back into his life.  She is relentless in her pursuit of Peter but the motivation behind her persistence will leave you astonished.

This movie has a very slow start to set up Peter and Julie’s relationship and his search for a new love.  This is a starch contrast to the fast pace that Alexis falls in love.  Julie plays the bratty but wise college student but this is typical behavior of high school student.  So its hard to take her seriously.  While the middle some great moments, you may become disinterested before you see it.  So leave this movie as background noise for the first 30 minutes, then give it your attention.

Jess is in the middle of a messy divorce and custody battle with her husband Lars.  She is happy to have a work conference to attend in order to get away from it all.  At the conference, she meets a kind stranger straight out of her cowboy fantasies.  Everything seems to be great until the next morning.  Her sexy cowboy admits she was hired by Lars to catch her on tape having sex with a stranger and taking drugs.  She has one week to get $70,000 or he will give the tape to her husband.  Jess knows she will lose her son if Lars gets a hold of the tape.  So, she asks her father for the money and he gives her a swift and firm no.  Then she learns her estranged, identical twin sister Ally is in town.  Jess’s best friend Maddy tells her that Ally looks well off.  So Jess goes to Ally for the money.  Ally doesn’t have it but she offers to help trap the cowboy.  But if Ally helps Jess, Ally makes it know she wants something in return.  When Ally calls in her favor, Jess will end up in jail, her father will be dead, and she will need to ask Lars for help.

Get ready to have your head spin.  Just when you believe you have a handle on what’s happening, you are completely thrown off guard.  This movie has so many WTF moments, you will not be able to look away or trust anyone.  The ending leaves you with a question and hoping for a part 2.  The lead actress does an amazing job separating the twins into their own distinct personalities, speech patterns, and gestures.   You can even see the change as Jess pretends to be Ally and vice versa.  It’s a great and difficult dynamic that she pulls off flawlessly.  DVR this movie and watch it twice.  See if you can keep up and have your good wine ready.

Once Upon a Prince

Newly single Susanna is looking to get her life started.  She wants to be a landscaper but works in her parents’ floral shop to help them out and make ends meet.  While on a delivery, she gets a flat tire.  Nate pulls over to help her out and they hit it off.  The two start to date but don’t realize they are being followed and photographed.  When Nate learns of the photos he quickly puts an end to their sale.  He knows the photos will cause a scandal because he is a Prince and next in line to the throne.  It doesn’t take long for word to get back to the Queen.  She orders Nate home immediately and tells him to find a suitable woman to propose to at his coronation.  And Susanna, a commoner, is not suitable.  The Queen thinks Susanna is nice but they must follow tradition.  However, Nate only has eyes for Susanna.  So the Queen comes up with a plan.  Invite Susanna over and show Nate that she is not ready to be a member of the monarchy.  When Nate sees her crumble under pressure, he will get over her.

Based on the book Once Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck, this has a slow start that is saved by a conniving Queen (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  With the recent royal/commoner weddings, this movie doesn’t feel like a fairy tale but a true possibility.  However, this movie just doesn’t grab your attention with the lead characters.  It’s just not a relationship you root to go the distance.  Since the leads aren’t exciting, the Queen must deliver.  While she is cunning, it’s just not enough to make you believe the relationship is at risk. Since you know how the movie will end, the plot must be strong.  This movie’s plot is just decent.  Use this movie as background noise.
