Robin Roberts Presents Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes
Genelle wakes up next to a note from her boyfriend, Roger, after an argument. It puts her at ease before she talks to her daughter, Kimberly. Kimberly lives in Trinidad with her father, David, while Genelle lives in New York. Genelle works on the 64th floor. She and her co-workers joke, schedule meetings, and gossip when the building shakes. Genelle assumes it was an earthquake, but those don’t happen in New York. Genelle’s boss, Pete, gets a call from the police to stay put because there is chaos below. Roger turns on the news and sees the tragedy unfolding. He calls Genelle and tells her to leave the building. Then, they see a plane hit the other tower. Genelle and her co-workers stare in horror. Moments later, they watch the tower fall as debris rains past the window. Genelle and her co-workers descend the stairs. With 14 flights left, Genelle encourages Sarah to keep going. Then, the building collapses. When Genelle wakes up, she can’t move, and it’s dark. She calls out for help and can hear a trapped police officer, Evan, in the distance. He tells her to save her voice because rescuers will be coming soon. Genelle prays for survival, forgiveness, and a second chance. Someone is listening while the world is watching because she was in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11th.
Based on Angel in the Rubble by Genelle Guzman, this story hooks you by introducing you to Genelle’s flaws and strengths (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). She is a social butterfly, but it comes at a cost. Although the audience knows how the story will end, you will wait with bated breath as Genelle desperately pleads for help. Rescuers are above her, but they can’t hear her. While this film is Genelle’s story, it highlights the bravery and dedication of the first responders. Many lost their lives rescuing others, and today they still suffer. The film crew had the complex task of recreating the sights and sounds of that life-altering day. The green screen around the office was obvious, but the aftermath was jarringly realistic. The plot didn’t need music to convey emotions; Genelle’s struggle to live is enough. This well-made biopic showed the pain, horror, and devastation many people felt that day. It will stir up some emotions but also your faith.

Gossip to Die For – Review

Detective Quinn became a social media sensation after interrupting a TV set after a date. She’s since been cleared, and Captain Elis wants her back. Quinn informs Elis that she is on her way to headquarters after driving her son, Liam, to school. Elis tells Quinn not to come to the station because they have a high-profile case. Quinn must go to the scene and meet her new partner, Detective Carter. Quinn rolls her eyes because Carter is a newbie. However, Elis believes they are a perfect match because Carter understands pop culture. Quinn hangs up the phone after getting an overview of the case. Liam opens his laptop because he guesses her case is about actress Mia Bailey. Her death already made its way to the blog sites.
Quinn arrives on the scene and finds Mia’s body with slit wrists in a bathtub filled with blood. They find another body outside with a gunshot wound and an expensive watch. Carter doesn’t understand why Mia would end her life because she got a major role in a high-production film. The body outside looks like a robbery gone wrong. Quinn wants to wrap up both cases quickly, although Carter believes she is making a mistake. After work, Quinn talks to Liam, and he has startling information. A site called Gossip to Die For predicted Mia’s murder, just like the book based on the film she was set to star in. Quinn calls Carter with the new information.
Quinn arrives at the station, and Anna stops her. She doesn’t believe Mia did this. She believes someone murdered her friend. She and Mia were in a friend group who arrived in Hollywood together. Anna wrote the book Mia’s film was based on. And their friend, Jason, was Mia’s manager. Shiloh died a few years ago, and they haven’t seen Ozzie in years. Anna begs Quinn not to give up on Mia’s case. Quinn listens when the site predicts another death. Can Quinn find the culprit before there is another murder?
This suspense movie offers a delectable crime with a predictable twist. The setup is intriguing, using modern technology and social media. And having a site predict death is inherently creepy. The clues are easy to follow, but it becomes too easy to discern the motive before the reveal and monologue. The final twist feels a bit rushed, but it adds a layer of interest the audience wasn’t expecting. The suspects have no believable motive, and they were placeholders in a larger story. The subplot between Liam and Quinn adds drama, but it’s unnecessary. This film is available on Tubi and shouldn’t take up space on your DVR (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). It’s a good suspense film but not much of a mystery.

Roxane and her family moved to a new neighborhood. As her parents, Michael and Nicole, talk to neighbors, Roxane grabs her belongings from the moving van. Christopher steps in her path. Roxane thinks he is rude but cute. Later, she celebrates her 12th birthday with her family, and then a new friend, Mickey, asks Roxane to play a board game. As they play, Christopher comes over to belittle Mickey and asks Roxane to come over to his house. Roxane gently leaves Mickey, but Mickey warns her to be careful. Christopher kisses Roxane and asks her to be his girlfriend.
At school, Roxane approaches Christopher, but he blows her off. Mickey sees this and defends her. Later, Christopher tells Roxane he wants their relationship to be a secret. Christopher takes Roxane to a shack in the woods and walks her inside. She agrees until she sees several boys there. She tries to escape, but they block her path and assault her. Roxane returns home, avoids her family, and showers with her clothes on while crying. Nicole knocks on the door, but Roxane begs for privacy. Roxane goes to school, and someone wrote ‘slut’ on her locker. Mickey stands beside her with a rag and a bucket to clean it. Mickey urges Roxane to tell someone, but Roxane refuses. She believes people will blame and ostracize her. Mickey begrudgingly promises to keep her secret. Roxane’s secret will affect her life personally, professionally, and physically.
Based on Roxane Gay’s Hunger, this movie opens with Roxane’s narration warning that we won’t see a plot about weight loss or survival (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). We will see her life before and after her horrific assault. The film focuses more on the aftermath, but it’s necessary. The writer shows how it affected her choice of school, friends, lovers, and career. The director shot the attack carefully, but a trigger warning is mandatory. The plot gives Roxane’s parents a platform to speak their truth. Audience members may need to hear those words to find the strength to speak out. The makeup and clothing department created a believable look for Roxane’s weight gain in school. It shows her weight gain without being a spectacle. This story is compelling, honest, and heartbreaking because it’s her unadulterated truth.
