Six years ago, a brilliant mathematician and mother named Diana, went to her brother Frank for help with her newborn, Mary. Frank, a college assistant professor, was on a date and told his sister he could help tomorrow. The next day Diana committed suicide, leaving Frank to raise Mary. Frank gave up his job in Boston and moved to Florida. While being a freelance boat mechanic, Frank has been home-schooling Mary, but he believes she should go to school and be around children her own age. On Mary’s first day of school, her teacher Bonnie quickly realizes there is something special about the little girl. Bonnie believes she is gifted. Frank gives an easy answer to Mary’s abilities, but Bonnie alerts the principal. The principal urges Frank to put Mary in the Oaks Academy, but Frank says no and abruptly walks out. The principal takes matters into her own hands and calls Evelyn … Frank and Diana’s mother. Evelyn believes she should raise Mary with a proper education and the best of everything. Frank believes Mary should be around children her own age and socialize. Evelyn tries to reason with Frank, but when all else fails, she takes him to court. After a tough court battle, Frank and Evelyn compromise. However, this compromise will leave Mary in tears, Frank learning more about himself, and Evelyn learning more about Diana.

The writing in the movie is pure genius. The dialogue between actors flows with ease and grace. You quickly connect to Frank, Mary, and … in a way … Diana. You understand that everyone is doing what they believe is best for Mary, but it is easy to side with Frank’s point of view. Nonetheless, as Frank second-guesses his decisions, you start to second guess too. The screenwriter did an amazing job of making Mary sound like a smart girl with a child-like wonderment of the world. The one scene that stands out is Mary and Frank in silhouette, discussing God, in front of the sun. You are not focused on them, but their words. As Frank tries to navigate an adult conversation with Mary, she is jumping all over him like children do. It’s a strong and profound conversation. This movie is a must see and it will make you laugh, tear up, and drop your jaw. Full price is a steal.

A long time ago, an egotistical prince turned away a woman in need because she wasn’t beautiful. When she offered a rose in exchange for help, he only laughed. The woman turned beautiful and then cursed the prince to be a beast and all those who lived in the castle to become inanimate objects. The rose is kept in a glass case where a petal falls ever so often. If the prince doesn’t find a woman to fall in love with him before the last petal falls, everyone, including the prince, will be stuck for all eternity.

Belle is the weird girl in her small town in France. She is a smart, well-read girl that doesn’t want to marry any of they guys in town. She loves spending time helping her father, doing her chores, and visiting her quaint library. Gaston, on the other hand, thinks Belle is the most beautiful girl in town and she should be with the most handsome man … himself. He asks her on a proper date and she quickly says no. She finds Gaston ghastly and a brute. However, pushing away is advances only makes him want her more. When Maurice (Belle’s father) doesn’t return with his horse Phillippe, Belle goes off to find him. Belle finds her father in the castle of the Beast. She decides to take her father’s place in the dungeon. The living inanimate objects believe she can break their spell and set her free about the castle to get to know the man behind the beast. While Belle is at the castle, Maurice goes back to town and ask for help to get his daughter back. Of course, this means Gaston to the rescue, but for how long?

Now, this is a story you may know. So, for all my hardcore Disney fans, sorry for the long explanation in the paragraphs above. While the live adaptation of the cartoon is very popular, they must:

This is a hard sell for a classic movie. But Disney, once again, does a good job. They recreated classic scenes, songs, and dances while giving fans new elements and songs. Now be prepared the ending is a little … just a smidge … different but still good. Now the biggest problem is when the movie switch from live action to computer graphics. This transition is extremely noticeable and takes away from the viewing experience. While this live adaptation should be seen on the big screen, it should not be seen in 3D. So as they say, if you want to see it, Be Our Guest. LOL. Sorry … couldn’t help it.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

After a failed suicide attempt, Harrietta (an obsessive control freak) starts to think about her obituary. After reading a few, she stumbles upon a writer she likes, Anna. Harrietta marches to Anna’s job and demands Anna write her obituary. She gives Anna an alphabetized list of family, friends, and colleagues along with their favorite restaurants so Anna can interview them. Also, she gives Anna until Monday to deliver. Anna wants to say no but her boss tells her that Harrietta’s advertisements keep their newspaper afloat. Anna must make Harrietta happy to keep the newspaper open. Anna interviews are horribly disastrous. No one has anything nice to say about Harrietta. Anna does the best that she can to create the obituary and turn it in. Harrietta is extremely disappointed in Anna’s work and lets her know it. It’s then that Anna tells Harrietta that the writing isn’t the problem, it’s the subject. After some research and hurt feelings, Harrietta comes to Anna’s home unannounced with writing tips for Anna. Every obituary Harrietta has read has 4 parts:

  1. Family who loves them
  2. Co-workers who admire them
  3. Help the life of a minority or physically disabled
  4. A wild card

With a family that hates her, co-workers who fear her, no charity work, and no wild card, Harrietta sees where Anna has issues. So, Harrietta asks Anna to help her fix her life to improve her obituary.

This film is sharp and has great comedic timing, even though it covers the rough topic of death. Although Harrietta does work hard to change her life, her core self (strong, bold, brash) remains the same. While others think she is tough, she just wants people to live up to their potential and take a risk. But in the course of this story, both Anna and Brenda (the minority Harrietta helps) grow and become stronger. They even take the all-important road trip to see an estranged family member together. While a bonding movie isn’t unique, this movie was written in a refreshing way. The strong female leads aren’t apologetic for being strong, but hold firm in their resilience.  This is definitely one to watch in theaters.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Thank you for your approval – Harrietta

You should be so lucky – Ronald

I’m happy. I have a good life and you should be a part of it – Elizabeth

Well, I’m not sorry – Anna

You gotta be something. God put you in this world to be something – Brenda

After an abusive childhood, Mac Phillips is raising 3 children with his wife, Nan.  His children (Kate, Josh, and Missy) are being raised in a loving home and Nan is the driving force behind the family’s faith.  Nan calls God Papa when she talks to him and teaches her kids to do the same.  Although Mac’s is not as devout as Nan, he attends church with them.  One day, Mac takes his children on a camping trip and has a great night under the stars.  After watching Kate cause a boating accident, capsizing the boat, Mac jumps in the water to save his son.  Once his son is breathing, instant relief is turned into instant panic when he realizes his young daughter, Missy, is missing.  After a long search, only her red dress and blood stains are found in a shack.  The Phillips family buries an empty casket.  Four years later, Mac and Kate are both drowning in grief while Nan and Josh try to keep the family together.  Then, after a snow storm, a letter appears in Mac’s mailbox telling him to come to the shack for the weekend; and it’s signed Papa.  Mac can’t believe it, but once he realizes there were no footprints in the snow, he heads to the one place that is the sources of his pain: the shack.  Mac will endure hope, love, pain, and anger over 2 days with the people he questions the most about is daughter’s murder.

Wow.  This is a true tear jerker.  If you see this movie, come with an open mind and Kleenex.  Based on the book, The Shack by William P. Young, this story covers grief, forgiveness, faith, religion, judgment, hope, and love (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  You will question your own thoughts and beliefs about the topic; you should discuss them after taking a long deep breath.  The cinematography was beautiful as they walked into Mac’s mind and gave Mac the ability to see the world as they do.  Some moments in the book were taken directly out of the Bible (some are more noticeable than others), but don’t take this movie as a Christian movie.  It’s just a good movie that talks about tough topics.  It should definitely be watched, but if you have lost a child, it may be extremely hard for you.  Don’t be surprised if you want to read the book after watching this film.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

Logan is working as a driver for hire and hopes to save enough money to buy a boat. He wants to take Charles Xavier to live his final days on the water. However, it is 2029 and time have taken a toll on both men. Logan has blurry vision, has a limp, is having a hard time healing, has uneven claws that must be pulled out, moves slower, and coughs up blood. Charles has seizures that leave every human around him paralyzed and every mutant in agony. Logan has hidden Xavier in a water tank, with his caregiver, Caliban (a photosensitive tracking mutant), to block his powers. After a long night, Logan comes home to distressing news from Caliban, Xavier has been contacting someone. Logan writes this off and believes that Xavier is just talking to himself. While on the job, Logan meets Gabriela. She begs Logan to take her and her daughter, Laura, to North Dakota to a place called Eden. She is willing to pay $50,000 ($20,000 now and $30,000 when the job is done). Gabriela explains that Laura was a lab experiment for Transigen, that was bred to kill, along with several other children. The only problem was that the children didn’t want to fight. Transigen decided to make a better soldier and kill all the kids. Gabriela and the other nurses vowed to do everything they could to save these children. So Logan reluctantly agrees but when he goes to pick them up the next day, Gabriela is dead and Laura is gone. Considering it a bust, Logan goes back to Xavier, but Logan does know that Laura is hiding in his truck. Once Logan learns of Laura’s presence, he realizes Caliban was right. Xavier was talking to Laura. Logan is dead set on leaving the girl behind until trouble comes looking for her. Now, Logan must go on the run with a 90-year-old man and 11-year-old girl before Transigen finds and kills them.

This is a fitting end and treatment of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. It quickly explains the volatile relationship between Xavier and Logan but allows the relationship between Laura and her male counterparts develop. The former relationship can be quick because fans know everything about the actors and their characters. It’s the building of the relationship between Logan and Laura that takes its time. As they drive across country, with no two little words, the group has run-ins with gas station attendants, doctors, a nice family, and Laura’s past. Don’t worry, Wolverine is not getting mushy … in fact … Wolverine is as bloodthirsty as he is savage. Logan earns its R rating with every claw piercing a skull and ripping it to shreds. Fans will be satisfied but hope this isn’t the end … albeit … a fantastic end. So the recommendation is to see it now and in Dolby or IMAX. Do not miss the previews, but don’t stay past the end crawl. 100% worth every penny. This is not just another superhero movie.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Bloom is the new girl in school and if that’s not hard enough let’s look at her life’s scorecard:

  1. Her mother died
  2. Her father is not around
  3. She lives with her alcoholic uncle Mayn
  4. Her grandmother Gigi doesn’t remember her

On her first day at R. Murray High, she captures the attention of Herbert. But Herbert is dating the most popular girl in school, Harmony. This puts Bloom on Harmony’s enemy list in her first 5 minutes. But Bloom makes the weirdest and coolest friend named Graceland a.k.a. Gracie. This ball of energy is as friendly and kind as she is sporadic. Bloom tries to find balance in her life by dancing. However, the only studio in town charges $25 an hour.  So Gracie tells her to try out for the dance team, which Harmony is the captain. During tryouts, it’s obvious that Bloom is the only choice, but Harmony refuses. Instead of fighting, Bloom wants to kill Harmony with kindness. If Bloom does something nice, then Harmony will let her on the team. Gracie tells Bloom to nominate Harmony for Honor Girl. The plan would work, but there is only one problem: Herbert nominated Bloom too. But when a string of events causes a re-vote, Bloom starts to change towards Gracie, Mayn, and the entire school.

This movie has the humor of Juno, dancing of Center Stage: On Pointe, and the solid storytelling of Edge of Seventeen (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Breaking Legs has all the makings of a cult classic among teens with a quick wit, strong subject matter, and multi-dimensional characters. Each character is given a passion and struggle that gives them a depth not seen in mainstream teen movies. However, you do want to know more about Bloom’s father and why he isn’t in her life. Also, you want to know more about Mayn’s downfall from dancer to alcoholic. The biggest moment for this movie is when Mayn is there for Bloom during the biggest and most disgusting humiliation in this young girl’s life. There are no words, only emotions. This film remembers the beauty of silent. So Rent or Buy this movie today.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Katherine, Mary, and Dorothy, and a host of others are “colored computers” at NASA. They are given temporary assignments to calculate numbers at anytime and anywhere on the NASA campus. Mary is given the opportunity to work with Karl Zielinski. He tells her to apply for the engineering program because he sees her potential. The only problem is she needs classes at an all white school to join the program. Zielinski, a Jewish man whose parents died in the Holocaust, tells her to fight. Dorothy is doing all the work of a supervisor for the past year, but is still fighting to get the title with the pay. She is politely told that his position will never go to a “woman of color”. But in a brief moment, Dorothy sees the future for “computers” and “borrows” a FORTRAN book.  Now, she has to step up and compute the computer. Katherine is asked to report to Al Harrison to check their numbers, but is met with resistance in the form of black ink, a coffee pot, and a bathroom. These three women will be pushed to the back while helping America move forward in the Space Race. With them NASA will learn that numbers don’t have race or gender.

Based on Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly, the brains on these 3 women can’t be denied (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Get ready to cheer and be empowered to do more.  They worked hard and fought an uphill battle against segregation, racism, and sexism. When watching this movie, keep in mind that this isn’t 100 year ago. This was 1961. Its amazing to see how long this story has gone in the shadows of American history. These three women and all the other “computers” should make any African American, Women, Engineers, and Americans (period) proud of what they achieved. Also it is great to see how may people were rooting for them and that no computer was left behind. Sometimes ignorance isn’t out of hatred, it’s because you are not affected. Use this movie to look around the world and be affected. Change only comes when a majority sees it is needed.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away … we were given a story that changed movies forever. Rogue One is described as the prequel for Star Wars: A New Hope and the sequel for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). You will see classic characters and scenes you still love to this day. Now, 3D is not necessary but IMAX is essential. You will feel every laser fire and feel like you are flying in space. Although you don’t have to technically see the other films, it will help you get the jokes and some to the characters you see on the sideline. This Episode 3.5 is a beautiful and well executed movie.
