Peace is when sons bury their fathers. War is when fathers bury their sons.

Desmond Doss learned as a young boy that death is the ultimate sin, when he almost killed his brother in a fight. In that moment, he turned to God to help his brother and hisself.   As he got older, he used his faith to help is mother and stand up to his alcoholic father.  Fifteen years later, Desmond meets the girl of his dreams, Dorothy, after he saves a young man from exsanguination. A hard working nurse, Dorothy, provides Desmond with medical books; and his interest is sparked to be a medic for the U.S. Army. Once at Fort Jackson, Desmond (A.K.A Private Cornstalk) is one of the fastest in is regiment. However, everyone is taken back when he informs them that he will not touch a gun. He believes that killing is a sin and holding an instrument of sin is wrong. He is quickly labeled a coward by his comrades and commander. To break Desmond’s stronghold, the commander takes away the regiment’s furlough, his regiment attacks him, and Desmond is given the option of dishonorable discharge or prison. Desmond holds strong in his beliefs and sits in front of military police and a court to fight for them. That’s when an unlikely savior helps him. With everything he has been through nothing will top the fight in front of him once he goes to Hacksaw Ridge.

The true story of Desmond Doss could never be made up by Hollywood, because this act of bravery and faith could not be believed. In Okinawa, May 1945, Desmond save the lives of 75 men (including some of the enemy) single-handedly while dodging enemy fire. Using his “bra” and the mantra, “Please Lord, help me get one more”. This movie holds no punches when it depicts war. You will see bodies blowing up, shots to the head, throats being slashed, and men getting set on fire. This movie is not for the faint of heart. The message of faith, convictions, and duty ring true. The well executed cinematography puts you in the 1940s and in the harsh of battle. However with all the purity of the battle field, the CGI navy ship seems out of place. The Navy was crucial part of the fight, but the ships graphics could have been better. The magnificently crafted movie brings you the truth of war and freedom. If you can stomach the real gore of war, then see this movie today.  And before the credits you will get a look at the real Desmond and some of the men he saved.
