The Monster She Married – Review

The Monster She Married – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Six years ago, Shelley met with her general practitioner, Joseph Charalambous, after an asthma scare. She answered his questions while he examined her. He invited Shelley and her mother, Jacqueline, to a party at his home. They attended, but Joseph’s inappropriate attention to Shelley made Jacqueline want to leave. Later, Jacqueline examined her call log and saw several lengthy calls to an unknown number. Jacqueline calls it and can’t hide her disdain when Joseph answers. Joseph says Shelley wants to live with him and that he cares for her more than Jacqueline does. Jacqueline runs to Joseph’s home and demands to see Shelley. She reminds Joseph that Shelley is 15 years old and can’t leave without her permission. But Shelley won’t leave Joseph’s side. Jacqueline cries as she exits but vows to stay in Shelley’s life.

Today, Joseph and Shelley are married with two kids. He has a thriving campus practice and sees patients regularly. Shelley is a stay-at-home but works as an administrative assistant in his practice when needed. Everyone believes they are the perfect couple, but Joseph comes home late and abuses Shelley. She keeps quiet because she has no one to reach out to, but Shelley changes when two sisters, Katie and Sian, accuse Joseph of sexual assault. Joseph assures Shelley it’s lies, but her doubts grow. They reach her boiling point when one of the sisters becomes a victim of murder. Now she has to escape the monster she married. Can Shelley break free?

Based on Fatal Prescription: A Doctor without Remorse by John Griffiths, this film is a parents’ worst nightmare (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The story captivates the audience and doesn’t let go as Joseph manipulates his wife, colleagues, and patients. The writers carefully introduce Shelley as a victim, not a willing participant or seductress. She had no idea what he was capable of until it was too late. Viewers should remember that this film occurred in the 1980s. Parents didn’t know much about grooming, and it was harder to report. As each victim draws strength from something unique inside of them, you will cheer. This movie has a satisfying conclusion, but you are left with the nagging fear of how many never reported him. This film is more than a documentary; it’s a lesson.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Center Stage for Murder – Review

Center Stage for Murder – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Anxiously, Chloe waits as Daphne and Julian pick the next principal dancer for their Swan Lake Production. It was Leslie, but sadly, someone murdered her weeks ago. Sarah is confident Daphne and Julian will pick Chloe because Chloe is the best dancer. However, Grace and Rachel think Chloe is overrated. Daphne takes Leslie’s lucky scrunchie and puts it on Chloe’s head while naming Chloe the principal dancer. Chloe increases her practice while ignoring calls from her ex-boyfriend. After a grueling practice, she exits the dance studio but doesn’t see the ice. She falls, twisting her ankle and tearing her ligaments. Chloe doesn’t need surgery. However, she must hire a physical therapist. Sarah visits and offers to run errands for Chloe. Chloe is deeply grateful for the assistance. She gets a call from the hospital. They have assigned Avery to her. He will be there in the morning. Chloe can’t perform Swan Lake in time. Until then, she’s happy that Sarah got the role. She prays to dance again, but someone preys on her. Can Chloe discover who wants to destroy her and why?

This suspense film starts with Leslie’s murder, but the writers give Leslie one line of recognition. So, the killer is in Leslie’s inner circle. It won’t take long for the average Lifetimer to deduce the mastermind, but you may not know why. The plot reveals Chloe’s misunderstanding in the film’s 4th act. It was something anyone could easily manipulate. The writers added a nosy neighbor, but she was extremely helpful. She gossiped, aided, and made Chloe laugh. Most of the film was set in Chloe’s apartment. The director did a lot with a little space. This movie’s creep factor is entertaining, but everything else falls flat.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

No more tears tonight – Sarah

The show must go on – Julian

Leslie was our swan – Daphne

Where No One Can Find Her – Review

Where No One Can Find Her – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Jamie prepares food for her daughter, Izzy, but Izzy won’t eat. Izzy’s upset that Jamie won’t communicate with her father, Craig. He is in jail, and Jamie cut him out of her life. Recently, he’s been calling, but she ignores him. Jamie finishes work and arrives home. She finds her daughter on the floor when 2 masked intruders attack her. One puts a needle into her neck and injects an unknown substance. Later, the police find Jamie walking down the road mumbling incoherently. They question her about what happened. Before Jamie speaks to them, she finds a message. It says not to inform the police. So, she blames epilepsy for her state and the drugs in her system. The police let her go, and she gets a phone call asking for ransom. The kidnappers buried Izzy alive with food, water, and sleeping pills. Then, Craig comes out of the shadows. The parole board released him from jail 2 hours ago. He’s clueless about what’s happening to Izzy and believes it has nothing to do with him. Craig and Jamie must work together to save Izzy. Can they put their past aside and bring Izzy home?

This thriller movie offers something different. The writers didn’t make Izzy a damsel in distress. She assesses her surroundings, creates a plan, and executes it. She’s buried alive but happy to be alive. Craig and Jamie put Izzy’s safety first. They barely bicker about the past and only discuss Izzy. The set designer, director, and editor did a magnificent job shooting inside Izzy’s coffin. She has room to move, but the audience feels afraid. The actress acts as lighting director in many of her scenes, and she displays the perfect amount of teenage sass. Now, the kidnappers’ motive is pathetic, but everything else is well-written. While this plot is outlandish, it’s fun to watch.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

This is my god now – Izzy

I’m never going to get caught back up – Jamie

Nice swing – Craig

A Knight to Remember – Review

A Knight to Remember – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Museum conservator Emily beams when a marble statue of a knight enters her workspace. It’s Sir Griffin’s statue. He won a duel to marry Beatrice, but disappeared the night before their wedding. While Emily admires the statue, Ivy shoots content for the museum’s social media page. Ivy wants Emily to promote the tale’s magic, but Emily will only focus on the history. Emily’s boss, Jason, reminds Emily that they should focus on attracting donors, so a little magic never hurts. After everyone leaves for the evening, Emily starts to clean the statue. She sees an inscription written on a ribbon. It reads, ‘I shall not wake but by a kiss.’ Emily can’t read the rest but continues cleaning. Then, curiosity gets the best of Emily, and she kisses the statue. She hears a rumble and a crack. The statue is alive. Emily can’t believe the inscription was correct. She pushes Griffin out of the museum and takes him home.

Jason reports the statue missing. To Emily’s surprise, her ex-husband, FBI Agent Tom, takes the case. Emily tells Ivy about Griffin but allows everyone else to believe Griffin is a Renaissance actor. As Emily and Griffin spend time together, she starts falling in love with him. She doesn’t tell him because she’s afraid to get hurt again after her divorce. Emily believes she can have Griffin forever until Griffin starts turning to stone again. Griffin remembers his doctor, John of Kent, reading his star chart. John became flustered and warned Griffin to stay indoors before the wedding. He didn’t. Instead, Griffin rode his horse into the woods, looked at the stars, and prayed for his heart to turn to stone until he met someone to make it whole. Emily desires to be that person. Can she face her fears and profess her love or lose her knight forever?

Based on Her Knight at the Museum by Bryn Donovan, this magical tale of knights and gentlemen will make Hallmarkies swoon (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The writers created an interesting paradox. Griffin is a man in search of love, but fears marrying the wrong one, while Emily fears love because she married the wrong one. Griffin discovers how to make himself real but doesn’t tell her. His character gives her choice and free will. Viewers can feel the spark between Emily and Griffin, but you can also sense something between Ivy and Marcus. In the plot, their love develops naturally. The writers added 2 ticking clocks to keep the pace up. First, Tom is looking for a thief. So, Emily must stay out of his crosshairs. Second, the spell is wearing off. Griffin must fight the magic. The resolution is well-earned and heartfelt, but never rushed. This movie has sequel potential if it’s well written.
