Single Black Tenant – Review
Single Black Tenant – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes
Esme has fallen on hard times. She got a divorce, lost her child, and lives in a shelter. Esme works as a mechanic at her best friend’s garage, but it doesn’t allow her to save enough for a deposit. Today, Lydia will drive Esme around to check out rooms for rent that don’t require a deposit. After searching all day, Lydia has to relieve her babysitter. So, Esme travels to the last home by bus. She arrives late to the appointment, but the owner, Angie, is ecstatic to see Esme. However, Angie’s husband, Nolan, isn’t friendly. Angie shows Esme her living quarters in the triplex. After reviewing the area, Esme can’t believe her luck. Esme reveals that she’s handy, and Angie offers Esme a deal. She will lower the rent if Esme fixes up the old unit. Esme agrees, signs the paperwork, and moves in.
Later, Angie tells Esme that she and Nolan don’t own the home. The original owner, Barbie, left and never came back. They tried to find her but couldn’t. While fixing up the apartment, Esme finds Barbie’s ID, bloody rags, and a horrible odor. She believes Nolan must have done something, and Angie is hiding it. When Esme reports her suspicions to the police, they label her a true-crime fanatic. Esme won’t give up. She will prove that Nolan is behind Barbie’s disappearance and free Angie from his control.
This film isn’t about the culprit because Lifetimers can spot them from a mile away. Its focus is the motive, but the plot foreshadows too much and you can guess it. It ruins the suspense of the story. One beacon of hope is the friendship between Lydia and Esme. An interloper does everything to pull them apart, but they have adult conversations to minimize the impact. Soon, they see the wedge in their relationship and form a tighter bond. This film could be compelling, but it’s too predictable.
I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars
You better, because I am sick of living like this – Nolan

The Woman with Three Husbands – Review
The Woman with Three Husbands – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes
Natalie arrives at her brother’s home with solemn news. Their father died, but they feel nothing because their father was emotionally abusive. Natalie’s brother, Marcus, invites her into his home to catch up. Moments later, a woman named Larissa enters and introduces herself as Marcus’s wife. This is a shock to Natalie because she didn’t know Marcus got married. They met in a bar after Marcus felt lost. Then, two men enter the kitchen. Marcus stumbles during their introduction, and Larissa giggles. She tells Marcus to be honest. Jack and Nico are her husbands, too. They take care of the farm, and they spend equal time with Larissa. Marcus assures Natalie that he’s happy and asks Natalie to stay for the night. Although Jack isn’t happy about the arrangements.
The family goes to the pub with Natalie and has a fun night. Natalie walks to the bar and sparks a conversation with Ken. He gossips about every person there. When Natalie points to Marcus, he warns her to stay away from them. He doesn’t care about their alternative lifestyle, but he believes one of them is a killer. Fearful, Natalie returns home and ponders what Ken said. She begs her brother to leave, but he refuses. He walks away, and Natalie hides as she overhears Nico and Jack arguing. After Nico exits, Jack tells her to leave now, or he will make her.
Marcus notices that Jack missed a critical chore in the morning. So the family and Natalie search the property for him. They find Jack’s body in an embankment. The police believe it was an accident. However, Natalie fears her brother is living with a murderer. She won’t leave or believe the police’s findings. She will stay and help on the farm while trying to find a killer.
This script dips its toe into polyamorous relationships without being judgmental. As each husband talks about meeting Larissa, the viewer will notice a common thread between their story. That thread will break your heart. Now, the killer isn’t surprising, but the motive will make your head spin. That final twist saves the film from another Lifetime lost cause. Viewers are left to wonder what the difference is between this family and a cult. This plot is wild, and the pacing is perfect.
I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

The Love Heist – Review
The Love Heist – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes
Kayli arrives at the Park Lux hotel and grabs a luggage cart. The head of security, Liam, promptly informs her that she can’t take it. Security is on high alert because celebrities are in town for a week-long gala. Liam has a lot of work between thieves and paparazzi. He escorts Kayli safely to her room, and she unpacks the looks for actress Rini-Jean. Rini-Jean hired Kayli’s boss, Celine, to design one-of-a-kind styles for each event. Kayli tells Liam that an important dress will be arriving soon. It’s Elizabeth Taylor’s 1970s Academy Award dress. The Chicago Fashion Institute loaned the dress to them, and it must be protected at all times. Liam offers to keep an eye out for the dress’s arrival before leaving Kayli’s room. Soon, Celine arrives with exciting news. Her son plans to get married in France in a few days. She doesn’t want to miss it. So she will leave Kayli in charge. Kayli is unsure because she once led a design that ruined an actress’s career. She assures Kayli that everything will be fine if she sticks to the plan. Celine leaves.
The dress arrives, and Liam brings the wardrobe upstairs. He will return for the wardrobe after Kayli makes changes and lock it away until Rini-Jean wears it. Rini-Jean arrives and tries on the looks, but she hates them all. Kayli calls Celine for help. She encourages Kayli to make something original. Kayli leaves the hotel and stops at a consignment shop. She finds everything she needs and creates something new for Rini-Jean. Rini-Jean loves it and leaves for the first event. When Liam arrives for the dress, Kayli states that she hasn’t made the alterations because she had to leave to make Rini-Jean’s outfit. Liam’s aghast at Kayli’s admission because she wasn’t supposed to leave the dress. They open the wardrobe to discover that the Elizabeth Taylor dress is gone. Someone stole it. Liam must find the culprit. His boss, Errol, informed Liam that he is up for a promotion. Liam will lose it if they can’t find the gown. Kayli will lose her job with Celine. Can they save their reputations and find the dress while falling in love with each other?
This mystery is intriguing, but sadly, it takes a back seat to the predictable love story. The enigma is a subplot to bring the leads together. While the chemistry is there, you won’t care. This film is for the Hallmarkies who love romance, not the sleuthers who love intrigue. Even the culprit’s reveal feels like an afterthought. If you take out the mystery, it wouldn’t have an effect on the overall storyline. The inspired fashion stands out, and it will catch your eye. It’s not enough to make you sit and watch this movie. Viewers should watch this movie if they like a fun rom-com, but not a mystery.
I give it 3 out of 5 stars
If you have to say ‘get it,’ is it funny – Kayli
You can’t be brave unless you’re scared – Liam
