Ocean’s 8 – Budget of $70 million – 1 hour and 50 minutes

Ocean's 8
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Debbie is out on parole after 5 years, 8 months, and 12 days in prison.  She convinces the parole board that she wants to live on the straight and narrow path.  However, the moment her feet touch the ground, she is back to her old ways.  After “shopping” and “finding a hotel room”, she calls Lou.  Lou was her partner in crime and looks forward to hearing Debbie’s new plan.  Debbie wants to rob the Met Gala for a Cartier Necklace priced at $150 million.  Lou believes they will need dozens of people and millions of dollars.  Debbie assures Lou that she only needs 7 people and $20,000 for her plan.  So they recruit:

  1. Nine Ball – master hacker
  2. Tammy – a fence
  3. Constance – pickpocket
  4. Rose – fashion designer
  5. Amita – jewelry maker

With these people by their side, Debbie and Lou will attempt to give and get the Cartier necklace from Daphane (Hollywood starlet) and replace them with a fake.  Everything is going as designed until Lou finds Debbie’s true motivation for pulling off this heist.

As an extension to The Ocean’s Trilogy, this movie creates a good story with dashes of the past, lots of jewels, and some con-artist’s tricks of the trade (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  While viewing the old movies isn’t necessary, it helps fill in some of the blanks about the Ocean’s past and family ties.  And fret not, you will learn why Debbie was arrested and who put her there.  Also, they explain why they chose an all women crew.  Plus using the Met Gala as a background, it provides you a look at the exclusive star-studded party while giving the viewers lots of stars from different walks of life.  This movie has plenty of close calls, nail-biting moments, and slick moves.  You will see these women use their wits to take control of the situation at any time.  It has a few funny lines but it never gets sappy or emotional.  Movies with an all-female cast can easily fall into the “Lifetime” or “Hallmark” trap.  This does not.  This movie is all about the heist and a different type of female empowerment.  See it matinee and Dolby is not necessary.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Holy Crap – Daphne

You gotta clean up your footprint – 9 ball

Ebay – Tammy

How did I get here – Rose

Well I got 45 dollars, I can go anywhere I want – Debbie

She needs to see it in the light – Amita

Because when you’re drunk, it tastes like Vodka – Lou

In Rome 1973, Paul “Paolo” Getty walked up to some prostitutes to find a good time.  After being rejected for his age, he is kidnapped and held for $17 million dollars.  Now to some, this is a large sum of money but Paul is the grandson of John Paul Getty.  John is the richest man in the history of the world.  He discovered a way to get oil out of Saudia Arabia and created a shipping company to get the oil to the US.  He is a billionaire a few times over.  He can make the ransom in interest alone.  But when asked by the press, John believes the price to pay is nothing.  He has 14 grandchildren and believes paying the ransom will put them all at risk.  However, behind the scenes, John has hired Fletcher Chase; his #1 deal maker.  Fletcher has to strike a deal with the kidnappers and handle his toughest obstacle: Gail Getty, Paul’s mother.  John has refused her request to see or speak to him about helping her son.  She has been broke since she divorced her husband (John’s son) and got full custody of the kids due to her husband’s drug addiction.  This mother will stop at nothing to help her son, even go after an empire publicly.

Based on the novel Painfully Rich by John Pearson, you will leave being disgusted and saddened by John Getty (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It’s understandable to see his concern about how ransom payment will make his family victims.  But how much money is enough for one person?  And when is the money controlling you?  John valued things not people and could hold grudges for years.  Gail was the polar opposite of John.  She valued her family and was determined to go to every extreme to get her son back.  While the world believes she was rich, she only got the Getty name, not the money.  She will take the empire to task and you will cheer for her each time she stands up to John.  The biggest turn around in the entire movie is Fletcher.  He will go from one of John’s henchmen to Gail’s biggest supporter.  This is one to see and experience.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

If you can count your money, then you’re not a billionaire – John Getty

We’re not poor, we’re broke. There’s a difference – Gail

There you go, using that word again ‘joke’ – Fletcher

Molly Bloom survived a 63-degree curve in her spine to become an Olympic hopeful.  And with a frozen branch, her path to life took a dangerous, illegal, and drug-addicted turn.  She started working as a cocktail waitress at a nightclub at night and a director’s secretary in the day.  With a high LSAT score, the best college education, and a head for numbers, Molly knew her boss’s company was failing.  However, he was still making money.  Molly didn’t know how until he told her to contact a list of numbers for an underground poker game he ran.  As Molly collected the buy-in, took tips, and cashed out the players, she studied every term, play, and every player to become the “Princess of Poker”.  But no princess could ever do what she did.

Based on the novel Molly’s Game by Molly Bloom, this movie goes at a pace as fast as a poker game (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Molly explains how she got in the business, why she got in the business, and who she is outside the tabloid headlines.  She remained clean and even paid taxes, but the last 2 years were a downward spiral with drugs, attacks, and illegal rake taking.  She doesn’t lie about who she is or what she did.  However, she protects the players who have not been exposed.  Even with a million dollars on the table and no money to her name, she refuses to give up her players.   She is a stand-up woman in a man’s game.  This is a movie to watch twice and see if you can keep up.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

The United States of America versus Molly Bloom. I like to bet on the heavy favorite – Molly

You choose now to read The Crucible – Charlie

20 years after the first attack, the world has found global peace while creating new weapons, planes, and space stations with collected intelligence from the aliens’ technology. Also, several of your beloved characters have grown within the past 20 years. Here is a synopsis of their growth:

Character Independence Day Resurgence
David Levinson Cable TV Repairman who saved the world In charge of research for Area 51
Julius Levinson David’s father Author of “How I Saved the World”, Retired
Dylan Dubrow-Hiller Son of Jasmine Dubrow-Hiller & step-son of Steven Hiller Pilot and Captain of Earth Space Defense (ESD)
Jasmine Dubrow-Hiller Mother of Dylan, Wife of Steven, Exotic Dancer Hospital Administrator
Steven Hiller Pilot, Hero Died in test flight
Thomas J. Whitmore President, Pilot Completed second term, having nightmares and visions
Patricia Whitmore First Daughter Former Pilot, speech writer for the current president
Dr. Brakish Okun In Charge of Research at Area 51 In a coma for 20 years

Now, the world is monitoring the sky, when a spherical space ships looms over earth. With one vote from the world’s leaders, it is quickly neutralized. Once again, earth wins. But Thomas Whitmore and Dr. Okun know better. Since their close encounters, they experience headaches and visions that something bigger is coming and we may not be able to stop it. Then, a much larger ship comes and sets anchor destroying everything in its path. This ship is drilling to the earth’s molten core to extracted it for fuel. It this happens, all earth on life is lost. Dylan, Patricia, and Jake (reckless pitot, Patricia’s fiance, Dylan’s former friend) must work to defeat the invaders once again. This time everyone will learn that all things aren’t as they seem.

This movie is just as fun as the first, Independence Day (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). You should see the 1st movie before seeing the 2nd to get jokes, reason for vision, and answers to your “what happen to …” questions. The special effects are great during the landmark destruction scenes but lost in the battle scenes. This movie is a “must-see” in the theater at full price. You won’t be bombarded by product placements. You will have cheer, laugh, and have your heart break. No need to stay past the end crawl or see it in 3D.

I give this 3.5 out of 5 stars

Let’s go kick some alien ass – Dr. Okun

I honestly didn’t think that would work – Jake

Just tell me you will be careful up there – Jasmine

Toula, working at her parent’s diner again, is dealing with the pain of her only daughter, Paris, potentially leaving for college.  Its then, Toula and Ian realized that they are neglecting each other and need to get the spark back.  Paris likes being Greek, but is put off by the closeness of her family.  Her grandfather, Gus, wants her to find a Greek boy to marry; and her parents want here to attend a college close to home.  Paris just want to move as far away as possible.  And just a Toula is trying to come to terms with changes in her home, Gus, Toula’s father, discovers that the priest did not sign is marry license.  So, he and Maria are not married.  Toula and Ian must put together a wedding for Toula’s, convince their daughter to keep her college pick local, and strengthen their relationship.

This film is a homage to the first film.  You must see the first to get the hidden and upfront jokes in this movie (i.e. bundt cake with a flower, Windex, all words being Greek, and moose cacas).  This movie is like the first but with a “Sandwich Generation” spin.  My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 does make you laugh and tear up but not at full price.  If you like the first movie, see this one as a matinee.  It’s not better than the first but just as good.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

With Batman watching over Gotham and Superman watching over Metropolis, you would believe they would be on the same side of the law. However, as time passes, the world is turning on Superman because, like with any war, there is collateral damage to his heroism. Soon Lois Lane discovers that outside forces maybe the cause of the world’s contempt of Superman. And this world of contempt includes Batman. Batman believes that being all powerful, can’t be controlled … so Superman must be stopped. Superman just wants the world to see him as a hero, not a villain or a god. This battle of moral right and wrong is epic.

This is truly an origins story for the Justice League. Even though it may seem to lag, every scene is necessary. The dream of a battle between Superman and Batman comes to life and far beyond the imagination. Keep your eyes open for all Justice League nuances. Although this is worth seeing for full price, it is not worth seeing in 3D. Often, the reflection of light will cause the 3D blur during important scenes. You will cheer, be shocked, and amazed. DC comic fans will be pleased. FYI, don’t stay after the end crawl.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

James Clevaland “Jesse” Owens is a kind, shy man starting his education at Ohio State University (OSU). He wants to run track and is greeted by a no nonsense coach named Lawrence Snyder. Snyder sees the potential in Jesse but has to learn about Jesse’s everyday struggles. Within 2 years, Jesse is asked to join the Olympic Trails to qualify for the Olympic team. As Jesse dreams of going to Berlin loom closer, he meets with members of the NAACP. They ask Jesse not to run in order to show solidarity for the Jewish people. Jesse knows that not running will have no impact. But running and losing will have an effect on the USA and Berlin. If he runs, he must win.

This story isn’t just about Jesse Owens, but the Olympics and the Hitler Regime. Viewers may know the story of Jesse, but not truly understand his struggles coming from his family, his country, and the world. Also, viewers will learn all the backdoor deals that were made with the Nazis to hold the Olympic games in Berlin with Jewish and African American athletes. This period piece keeps in step with clothing, hair, architecture, and language. It is easy to get sucked into this story. Although it is a 2 hour movie, you are continuously surprised at what you learn, understand, and appreciate in his world. See this film today.

I give this movie 5 out of 5

Five men work together to rob a bank for the Russian Mob. If this isn’t bad enough, these 5 men are either ex-military or active police officers. Irina, the head of the Russian family since her husband was locked up, decides not to pay them until they do another job. And just to make sure the job is done, Irina threatens to never let Mike see his son, who is her nephew, again. Reluctantly, Mike accepts. But as the job looms closer, the team starts to fall apart. The team decides that in order to pull attention away from their job, they must cause a Triple 9 (police code for officer down). The Triple 9 victim will be the rookie cop, Chris, who is partnered with Marcus, a member of the team. Soon everything starts to dissolve.

This plot will make you dizzy. It tries to focus on all the characters in their interconnection too quickly. You never truly know a character or their motives until an hour in the movie. The better choice would be to have a brief synopsis in the opening credits. The viewer is often left confused about each character and the multiple subplots. This movie is saved by its constant twist and turns. You will be shocked and surprised. This movie is great for a matinee.

I give this 3 out of 5 stars
