After a 4 year relationship with Josh, Alice decides to take a break from her relationship to discover herself – as a single woman. She moves in with her sister, Meg, a single, career focused oB/GYN. Meg believes that “having it all” is not for her and knowingly gives everything to her career. However, Meg has 2 encounters that will change everything. Then, Alice, working as a paralegal, meets Robin who teaches Alice how to be single (hence the title). Soon Alice hooks up with Tom, a bartender, who is all about the single life, too. Well, Tom thinks he loves the single life until he meets Lucy, living above his bar, and he rethinks his plans. Lucy is desperately looking for Mr. Right and this causes her to easily scare men away. Soon each character discovers what is great about being single, what is bad about being single, and if single life is what they really want.
This story is great because there are no perfect characters. Men nor women are demonized or praised in this movie. It has a Valentine’s Day feel but with fewer characters. How to be Single is funny because the conversations are real. However, the changes from steady cam and documentary style can get dizzying since its done in the same scenes. Rebel Wilson, playing Robin, is hilarious, as always. And this main stream movie ends like an independent film. No character ends with a perfect bow on their lives, because that is not real life. That is what makes this a great film. It is definitely worth seeing at the theaters. You won’t feel cheated paying full price, but no need to add it to your DVD collection.
I give this movie 3.5 out of 5 stars
I did not think this through – Josh
I’m actually going to wipe my fingerprints off that – Robin
There is no such thing as a break, season 3 Ross – Robin
