In 1962, freshmen Kent and Larry are looking to join a fraternity at Faber College. First, they go to the prim and proper, Omega Theta Pi. It’s not long until they are grouped with the outcast and leave. Kent suggest they go to Delta Tau Chi because he is a legacy with a guaranteed acceptance. With some resistance, Larry goes with Kent; and they feel at home with the Delta debauchery. They become pledges and are given nicknames. But with the mayhem that includes golf balls, food fighting, and a horse, the Deltas are put on double secret probation. The Dean wants the Deltas out of his school and sends spies to help. The Deltas are warned, ‘one more incident or failing grades and they are out’.  The Deltas see this as lose-lose situation and decided that they would go out with a bang … by having the biggest Toga Party of all time. If they thought their school life would end here, they were sadly mistake. The Dean and the Omegas will learn; getting in the way of the Deltas will leave you lying on the concrete.

Animal House is a smart comedy that broke the 4th wall, introduced a strong ensemble cast, and gave great character recaps. This classic stands out in the National Lampoon franchise because it doesn’t go for the cheap laugh. For today youth, the party may seem tame but it’s not what ends the movie. The final climax is with one hell-raising parade. That’s when it all hits the fan. But remember this movie wasn’t about the party, it is about picking on the little guy, sticking it to the man, and brotherhood. However, the younger generation will see how easy it was to steal a test in 1960s. With all its positive, it does have a slow build and names do get confusing as they switch from nickname to first name to abbreviated first name. One name, all though not realistic, would have sufficed.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

My advice to you: start drinking heavily – Bluto

This may seem an inopportune moment to asked Dean Faber, but do you think you can see your way clear of just giving us 1 more chance – Robert Hoover
