Jamie gets piecemeal texts from his boss, Tyler. Jamie waits for the last message to appear before responding. He promises to look after Tyler’s mother, Diane, during a difficult time. Diane watches Jamie approach the door and waits a minute before answering. She abruptly speaks to him while opening the door. She wants to know why Tyler isn’t there helping her. Jamie explains that Tyler is out of the country and handling dangerous business. He assures Diane that Tyler is safe, but he must remain cautious. Until then, he will help her plan the funeral for her husband, Henry. Diane rolls her eyes at the concept of Tyler’s assistant filling in for him. She immediately interrogates Jamie and tries to push him away. However, he refuses to leave. They will remove the cone of silence and share unbridled honesty. They will call out each other’s flaws and hold each other accountable. Can they get through Henry’s funeral without killing each other?

This drama concludes with peace and acceptance, not flowers and songbirds. The writer didn’t force a romance during Diane’s moment of loss. She’s in different stages of grief at the same time. She’s accepted her husband’s death but is angry at Tyler’s absence. Diane unloads on Jamie, but not to be mean. The script allows her to see herself in Jamie. And Jamie sees his future in her. The plot doesn’t make him an apologetic sympathizer. The dialog pushes him to fight back and match her wit. It’s shocking, funny, and heartfelt. The script brilliantly makes them two sides of the same coin. And the leads take full command of their performance. This movie has an independent feel with broad appeal. This isn’t a glamor movie but a focused snapshot of life. This film found the perfect home on HBO Max (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).
