Asia’s husband, Timmy, argues that she does nothing all day. She points out that he wanted her to become a housewife. And now he says she is killing his spirit. She questions whether there is another woman. Timmy admits that he’s seeing someone, but it hasn’t gotten physical. Then he asks Asia for a divorce. Their daughter, Sasha, cries as she listens to them argue from her bedroom. Asia has no idea how she will break the news to their other daughter, Melanie, who is attending college.
One year later, Sasha and Asia argue in the grocery store. Sasha’s tired of her mother’s Mexican-inspired cuisine. A man, Darnell, interjects by telling Asia to add some yellow peppers to her food. He says it will add a sweeter flavor profile. Asia jokes that she won’t let some random person help her daughter bully her. They spark a conversation and playfully take verbal jabs at each other. Six months later, Asia and Darnell elope.
Asia and Darnell throw a party to celebrate their marriage. Melanie visits with her boyfriend, Brad, while on break. And Asia’s brother, Brett, stops by to celebrate. Melanie and Brett welcome Darnell into the family with open arms. Melanie even calls him “dad” because she holds Timmy in disdain for his actions. However, Sasha won’t call him dad. Darnell laughs and says it will take time, but he will respect her choice. However, the voices inside his head refuse to let anyone ruin his chance to pick his perfect family. When others tried, he killed them. He’s willing to do it again unless the police stop him first.
This thriller goes in-depth into the mind of a killer. It gives Darnell’s background history and psychiatric diagnosis. You will understand what caused him to break down. The plot even gives you Asia’s tumultuous past. You discover why she became easy prey for this smooth talker. This deep dive makes the film intriguing. The investigation moments give viewers a much-needed comedic break within the insanity. The scene of Darnell arguing with his other personalities displays the director’s camera work and the actor’s range. He gave the same character three speech patterns, three distinct body movements, and three separate tones. It makes the final scene stand out even more. This film ends with a possible part two. Hopefully, it can live up to the first.
I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars
