Nicolas Cage desperately auditioned for a role because he believed it was a once-in-a-lifetime part.  And he needs the money.  His agent, Richard Fink, got a call from Nick’s accountant.  Nick owes his hotel $600,000.  Also, Nick has debt, alimony, and a lavish lifestyle.  While Nick didn’t get the part, Fink has an offer for Nick.  A billionaire wants Nick to come to his birthday party for $1 million.  Nick says no and goes to therapy with his daughter, Abby.  While Nick thinks they have a solid relationship, Abby believes he concentrates on his career more than her.  On movie night, Nick made her watch The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  And he discussed it for hours.  Nick drops off Abby at the home of his ex-wife, Olivia.  Olivia reminds Nick that Abby’s Sweet 16 party is tonight.  Nick promises to make it and heads back to his hotel; only his keycard doesn’t work.  Feeling at his lowest, Nick calls Fink and says yes to Javi Gutierrez’s birthday party.

When Nick lands in Mallorca, a fan, Vivian, approaches him for a picture.  But she has another motive.  Vivian is a CIA agent investigating Javi.  She and her partner, Martin, think Javi is a drug lord who kidnapped the daughter, Maria, of a president to make the president drop out of the election.  Since the U.S. is in good standing with this president, they want him to remain in power.  So, they must save Maria by putting a tracker in Nick’s pocket.

At Javi’s compound, Javi welcomes Nick with open arms.  And Gabriela gives Javi the courage to talk to Nick.  Javi sent his screenplay to Fink because he wants Nick to star in it.  After Javi works up the nerve to ask, Nick gives Javi disappointing information: Nick is retiring from acting.  Vivian and Martin grab Nick off the street and give Nick details about Javi.  But Nick doesn’t believe them because Javi is kind.  Vivian and Martin use Nick’s parental instincts to lure him into their plot.  They need Nick to stay at Javi’s and look for Maria.  So, Nick tells Javi he will help Javi write a new screenplay to give Nick the time he needs to find Maria.  When Javi discovers Nick’s intentions, will Nick be able to use his acting skills to get out of the situation?

This buddy-comedy movie allows Nick to laugh at himself and the movie’s wild plot.  During the story, the focus changes.  And it becomes an action movie.  At certain moments, the conversation is so in-line with the action that you feel like Nick and Javi are narrating it.  It even mentions that the plot slows down during conversations.  One thing for sure: Nick gets the joke.   But you gain insight and sympathy about him when watching this film.  It allows viewers to see fandom at its best and worst.  This movie is a guaranteed laugh, but it doesn’t spark an interest to buy.  But don’t be surprised if you have a newfound respect for Nicolas Cage, Face/Off, and Paddington 2 (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).
