Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation – Review

Mavis realizes the more she and her father Dracula work together, the less time they spend together as a family.  She wants to make sure Dennis knows his grandfather.  So, Mavis books a cruise with several stops and the final stop being the Bermuda Triangle.  At first, Dracula isn’t impressed because he believes a cruise boat is just a hotel on the water.  But he changes his mind when he sees Captain Ericka.  Dracula hasn’t told his family, but he has been feeling lonely and wishes he can feel the “zing” again.  He hasn’t felt it since his wife died.  So, having that “zing” come back the moment he sees Ericka puts a pep in his step.  But Dracula doesn’t know that Ericka is the great-granddaughter of his arch nemesis Abraham Van Helsing.  And she has one mission, to retrieve an item to destroy all of monster-kind, including Dracula.

This movie falls in-line with the Hotel Transylvania franchise (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It has enough kid humor to keep children entertained while providing the musical score parents will love.  This movie features a DJ mix off you will never forget.  While it does have several aspects you will love, it starts to get boring and predictable.  Your mind will start to wander.  However, it does provide a message of love and loss that children and adult will understand.  See this movie matinee

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

She’s my right arm’s cousin – Frank

When will you Van Helsing learn to get go of that – Dracula

Yes, I’m human but don’t hold that against me – Ericka

Sicario: Day of the Soldado – Review

Sicario: Day of the Soldado – Budget of $35 – 45 million – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Sicario: Day of the Soldado
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

The U.S. Government want to add Mexican Drug Cartels to the terrorist list after several suicide bombers attacked on American soil with the cartels’ help.  At first, they consider going after the head of the cartel.  However, Graver knows this approach will only create more cartels.  Graver decides to start a cartel war by going after the kingpin’s children.  He will kidnap Isabel with the help of Alejandro.  And during the kidnapping, they will make Isabel think they are saving her in order to gain her confidence.  But when the mission changes Isabel and Alejandro are collateral damage that must be dealt with immediately.  Will Graver hurt or help this situation?

The second act of Sicario, this movie is not a continuation of the first but still keeps the same momentum (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It has lots of action and twists to keep you entertained.  But some moments are just dull and slow.  It was bloody, violent, and with government cover-ups, however, it never fully captivated the audience.  The stand-out moment was the US/Mexican shootout near the border.   It provided more action in that one scene than most action movies have it their entirety.  If you are a fan of the first, you will enjoy this one.  To newcomers, you don’t need to see the first to watch the second.  Also, there is a great potential for a part 3. But this won’t be the cult classic the first movie became.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

You believe that change is the goal. You have been doing this too long to believe that – Cynthia

Remember what happened to the price of cocaine after 9/11. Tight borders are good for business – Gravers

So you want to be Sicario. Sit down. Let’s talk about your future – Alejandro

Uncle Drew – Review

Uncle Drew – Budget of $17 – 19 million – 1 hour and 43 minutes

Uncle Drew
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Uncle Drew was the biggest name in Rucker tournament.  However, after a clash with his team members, none of the 5 players showed up.  Now, the tournament has a $100,000 prize and creates legends.  Dax is a Ruckers coach who has lost his players, girlfriend, and home.  He needs this $100,000 to get his life back on track.  As he sits on the sidelines, literally and figuratively, trying to figure out what to do, he sees an old man teaching a young man about the game.  Dax, like most onlookers, laughs at the elderly man, until he starts to win.  Dax quickly finds Drew and ask him to be on his team.  Drew tells Dax it has to be his team and his rooster.  Dax tries to counter but Drew breaks him down.  Dax and Drew go on a road trip to find:

  1. Boots – on a psychiatric hold and in a wheelchair
  2. Big Fella – a Karate instructor
  3. Lights – blind
  4. Preacher – A preacher with a wife who WILL find him

While they all get closer, Drew and Dax are both keeping a secret.  Dax isn’t opening up about his missed hoop dreams and lack of love.  Drew isn’t opening up about his role in the team’s break up.  In order for the team to become a family, everything must come out into the light.

While this movie is better than expected, it’s what you expect.  It has some laughs, some heart, and some good basketball.  The team not only play in the Rucker Tournament, they also play against high school girls.  This movie also has a lot of messages.  First about letting go of the past.  Second, keep playing.  Three, don’t let your pride get in your way.  Even though it has all these messages, it doesn’t get preachy.  So if you are looking for a decent laugh, see this movie matinee.  If you love basketball, wait for Netflix or Vudu.  Stick during the end credits for bloopers and behind the scenes shots.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

A bag of Dax makes more sense – Mookie

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take – Uncle Drew

You’re Gladys Knight and they’re the Pips – Dax

Ryan, best-selling author, and therapist, who has built a brand with her husband Stewart is riding high and a woman how has it all. She was asked to be the keynote speaker at the Essence Festival in New Orleans. Her agent Liz tells her a big box store executive will be there; and if she does well, they will over her a product line and a TV deal. She decides to use this trip to get the Flossy Posse back together. Ryan, Sasha, Lisa, and Dina all make up the Flossy Posse, a group that met in A&M University and stuck together through thick and thin. But as the women grew up, they grew apart. Now after several years, these 4 ladies are going to let loose and do everything possible in New Orleans. The only problem is that their troubles are following them.

  • Dina, ride or die, has a bad temper and it has affected her work and personal life
  • Lisa, the mom, hasn’t dated since her divorce 2 years ago and doesn’t want to lose control like she did in the past
  • Sasha, the hot topics blogger, is not getting website traffic she wants and is facing eviction
  • Ryan, the star, is trying to hide a cheating husband that is on the verge of destroying their brand

In order to keep it all together these women must be honest and stand with each other but as tempers flare, they fight.

See this movie twice. You will be laughing through some of the jokes. Tiffany Haddish is the breakout star. Don’t be surprised if you see “Which Flossy Posse member are you” quizzes show up on the internet. If you thought Bridesmaids was crazy, Girls Trip is that times 10 (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  As the Drink, Dance, Fight, and Grapefruit through New Orleans, you have no idea what will happen next.  Also, this movie takes full advantage of having New Orleans and the Essence Festival as its backdrop.  With performances from New Edition, P. Diddy, Faith, Mase, Mariah Carey, Maxwell, and more play on the screen (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  You will dance and wish you were there for every moment of the full concert.  Also, there is a slew of cameos to add to the laughter.  This is not for children, 16 and up only.  And no need to stay past the credits.  But let’s hope there will be a part 2 because part 1 was not long enough.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

In 2012, The Stark building was highly damaged after the battle with Loki and his drones (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Toomes and his team started the cleanup but are told to pack up and go home by the US Department of Damage Control (DOCD).  Toomes asked them to let him and his crew stay.  He has his business, his family, and his crew’s family all on the line with this contract.  The DODC refuses to hear his pleases and asks him to leave.  Toomes becomes angry because the team is run by Stark Enterprises.  He believes that the big guy is shutting out the little guy.  So, he and his crew keep some of the alien technology to build weapons to sell to criminals.

Last year, Tony Stark saw a promising young hero on YouTube and tracks him down (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  He has Happy pick him up and brings him to Berlin as his wildcard in the Avengers’ Civil War.  Peter takes handheld video of the action and can’t contain his excitement.  Once the battle is done, Tony allows Peter to take the suit but he will be monitored by Happy.  He won’t know when his next mission will be but when it comes, Tony will tell him.  A few months later, Peter hasn’t heard from anyone although he reports to Happy every day.  He wants to have more freedom and work with the Avengers on a mission.   While he is being a friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man, he is in high school.  Peter’s friend Ned leaks that Peter is working for the Tony Stark internship program and knows the Avengers, including Spider-Man.  Liz, captain of Peter’s debate team and his crush, has a crush on Spider-Man.  Hearing Ned’s leak, Liz invites them to her party and asks Peter to bring Spider-Man.  At the party, Peter doesn’t want to change into Spider-Man but when the bullying starts, he goes outside to put on his costume.  When he is outside, he sees something blow up and goes to inspect.  There he sees weapons being sold, which he has only seen once before during a bank robbery he stopped.  When he interrupts the deal, everyone runs off.  Just as he catches up, he comes face to face with the Vulture.  After going toe to toe with the vulture, Peter is ready to take off the “training wheels” and go into “kill mode”.

Out of all the Spider-Man movies, this will become a fan favorite (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Don’t worry, you will not have to go through another Peter Park/spider bite/dead uncle backstory.  This movie only mentions the backstory for 5 seconds when Peter explains his powers to his best friend Ned.  The plot centers around Peter coming into his own as a man and his own superhero with the help of Iron Man, Happy, and Ned.  While the 3D visual effects for the Washington Memorial scene will make you dizzy, the computer-generated Spider-Man hasn’t gotten better.  It’s easy to see when the actor is replaced with CGI.  Although, a great aspect of this movie, is it having more than one comic relief.  Michelle, Tony, Happy, and Ned are great comic relief in a time of crisis for Spider-Man.  While most the dialog was fun and strong, the conversation between Liz’s dad and Peter will make your heart beat faster.  For Marvel fans, be sure to look for easter eggs of Stan Lee, Venom, and a potential infinity stone.  If you can stand heights, see this in 3D.  And stay to the very end because your patience is its own reward.  Sit back and enjoy this next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Let’s keep it. The world is changing. It’s time we change too – Toomes

We have thin walls here – Happy

Blessin, Cori, and Tayla are seniors at The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women. This private charter school is focused on helping the young women become focused, get great grades, and move on to college. This senior class is special because it was the founding class of the school also these three ladies are a part of the school’s step team. The step team’s founding member is Blessing Giraldo. She has a passion for Step that has not resonated into her school work. She has been focusing hard her senior year but has her step-mates get college acceptance letters, she becomes disenchanted and starts losing focusing again. To make matters harder, she does not have 100% parental support because her mother suffers from depression and the refrigerator is usually empty. Cori Grainger is focused on becoming the school’s valedictorian. She was 1st in class one year and that taste of being on top is in her veins. She dreams of attending John Hopkins but understands that being one of seven means money is non-existent. And with her step-dad losing his job and the power going out, she is more determined to make the grades necessary to get a scholarship. Tayla Soloman is a good student with a helicopter mom. She is often embarrassed by her mother’s over-involvement in step practice and in school. However, her mother is a Baltimore Correctional Officer. She has seen the end result of the lost children. She is determined to ensure that Tayla will be more. However, when Tayla grades slip, she must regain her passion and succeed. To these girls, Step Is Life. They must put in the work to reap the reward. The prize will not be handed to them. They must take it. And what they want to take is the Bowie Step Competition. The past the Lethal Ladies of Baltimore (LLOB) Step team has not won or even placed in this competition. While their school director Paula Dofat keeps an eye on their grades and college admissions, their Step Coach Gari McIntyre keeps her eye on the team, their steps, and the championship. These Lethal Ladies must come together to make their team and personal dreams come true.

This film begins at the start of the school year for these ladies, which happen to be after the Baltimore Riots and the murder of Freddie Gray. These 3 ladies are constantly second-guessing themselves and their future. It’s heartbreaking to hear Blessin say “Maybe I dream too big”, you want them to gain the self-confidence to dream big, do better, and become stronger. And as they step, they do. However, the pain of home and school often seeps into step practice and cause conflicts among the team members. They continue to step while applying to college, studying, and facing the mounting pressure of their own minds. It’s their coach Gari and their director Paula that act as a secondary parental figure. Since the senior class has 120 students, they get personalized attention they would not get in public school. The teachers and staff know each girl by name and are focused on their success. Not just academically but personally. Seeing them grow beyond their own interpersonal battles is the most rewarding aspect of this film. It should be used to inspire everyone. “Remember, it could have been us”.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

I need them to understand this is way bigger than stepping – Gari

If they can make it through step practice, they can make it through life – Gari

Locked In

Chris, Ann Marie, and their daughter Taylor sit for a family dinner. While discussing right and wrong, they hear a noise in their barn. During Chris’s investigation, he finds a man digging in his barn. They fight and the man gets Chris’s gun; then shoots Chris. Chris dies in his wife’s arms. Two years later Ann Marie has agoraphobia and Taylor is working the land. She also wants Taylor to stay home during college. Taylor wants her mom to get better so she can leave the home that has become a prison. Later, Taylor finds a note that states, “If anything happens to me, you’ll know where to find it. Just keep my family out of it!!”. On the back of the note, there is a map that leads straight to their barn. In the barn, Taylor finds a lot of money and a gun. She immediately calls her boyfriend Blake. He wants to give the money to the police, but Taylor sees the money as a way to fix her life.  Taylor’s mind is made up until a stranger comes knocking.

This movie uses a slow build to spark interest and build up mystique, but it just takes too long.  You will lose interest in this movie and become overly critical of the mother’s action.  But make sure you pay attention the dinner conversation in the first 5 minutes of the movie.  It’s there to give the watcher a perspective on what Ann Marie believes in when it comes to right and wrong.   While the acting is done to the perfection, it can’t win against a boring and lackluster script.  This movie just felt like it took too long and the watcher will quickly lose interest.   This movie can be skipped.

Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood! – Review

Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood! – Showtime – 1 hour and 5 minutes

Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood! - Review

Tiffany Haddish takes the stage in her hometown of LA.  Shot before Girls Trip and after Keanu, Tiffany talks about her tough and painful beginnings.  However, it’s those beginnings that made her who she is today.  Growing up in group homes and foster care, she lived with different types of people and it made her a well-rounded person.  She had a moment when she lived in a car, dealt with a horrible relationship, and buried a family member on her road to Hollywood but she did it with positivity and a sense of humor.   In an hour, you will learn why she is a black unicorn who refuses to be rent-to-own with the key to the matrix and a Groupon in her MLK bag.

Tiffany Haddish delivers an hour of pure comedy.  She delivers great story telling that feels like a personal conversation.  She leaves politics alone and only focuses on making the crowd laugh by using her story of triumph and success.  She is an example of making lemonade out of lemons.  She speaks on the impact Kevin Hart and Jada Pinkett-Smith in her life.  She dreams bigger now because she has always had to.  She is a shining light of not just overcoming circumstances but using them to be better and the first black unicorn.  Sit back and get ready to laugh purely from the joy from which she cursed you.  This comedy special should have been longer, the hour went by way too fast.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Sorry, I just really wanted to be ratchet for 10 seconds – Tiffany Haddish

Summer at the Vineyard – Review

Summer at the Vineyard – HMM – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Summer at the Vineyard

Frankie and Nate have bills due and want to ensure the success of their vineyard, along with their relationship.  They hope that the Summer Art Walk is the best place to show off their first vintage wine.  Nate plans to cook a few hors d’oeuvre with Frankie’s wine.  It feels like a great plan but Frankie doesn’t feel like her wine is ready.  She slowly crumbles while hiding this secret from Nate.  She hopes she can speed up the aging process before Nate knows or they could lose the vineyard.  On the other hand, Nate heard that the Summer Art Walk was going to be canceled because the host’s road is closed due to an accident.  But he decides to host it at their vineyard, without telling Frankie.  Also, Nate created a new fertilizer and sprayed it all over the vineyard, now the plants are dying.  With days before the Summer Art Walk, Frankie and Nate are keeping secrets from each other.  But with the vintage not ready and the grape vines dying, will the communicate or have to sell the vineyard?

Based on Summer in Napa by Marina Adair, this isn’t a Hallmark love story (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It’s a lesson in communication.  This couple keeps acting as individuals, even dividing the jobs at the vineyard.  This division is causing a huge mess of the crops and ultimately, the wine.  This lack of communication then trickles into their relationship.  It’s frustrating to know that they need to talk to each other to fix their problem, but they are just too bull headed to do it.  However, that is a huge reality for relationships these days.  There is not enough communication.  So, watch this movie and analyze your communication in your relationship.  Not just your partner’s.

Clare witness something no child should ever witness; her mother’s suicide.  Now, in high school, Clare has a small, close, group of friends, June and Meredith.  But she is often teased by the popular kids.  And with her father’s dumpster diving, she will be the subject of ridicule for years to come.  After being in a fight with Darcie, the most popular girl in school, and declared the loser, Clare wants more of her life.  She comes home to an early birthday present from her father Jonathan, a box with Chinese writing.  Clare can read some of the characters, but not all.  She does understand the box grants 7 wishes.  After asking around, Ryan, a classmate, tell her his cousin Gina can read it.  Gina translates that the box will grant 7 wishes but there is a blood price to pay.  For each wish, someone close to Clare will die.  But if she gives up the box, all her wish will be undone.  And with a little more research, Ryan learns that each of the box’s previous owners has died after their 7th wish.  But with 5 wishes done, and 5 dead, can Clare give up the one thing giving her everything she ever wanted?

Wish Upon attempts to mix the mystery of The Box with the deaths of Final Destination (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  But it does too much foreshadowing to be mysterious and not enough blood to make you cringe.  While the actors do their best, the script is just missing something.  And no amount of great acting could fix a substandard plot.  While this is an ok teen movie, it’s nothing more than a summer ploy to get teens off their phones and into a movie theater.  The only moment of suspense is when Meredith and Ryan are both close to death after Clare’s wish.  You aren’t sure who will die and how.  While this is a RedBox movie, if you see it in theaters, stay after the first end credits.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

Rell’s cousin, Clarence, is urged by his wife, Hannah, to have some fun while she is out of town. Rell and Clarence decide to see a Liam Nelson movie but are shocked when they come home to find Keanu has been stolen and Rell’s home ransacked. Rell is determined to find Keanu and discovers Keanu is with the 17th Street Blips. Rell and Clarence pretend to be assassins and meet with the Blips leader, Cheddar. Cheddar tells Rell and Clarence that he will give them Keanu, if they do a drug run for him. Rell and Clarence, whom is reluctant, says yes. So Rell and Clarence need to keep up their assassin facade, make the drug run, and get Keanu back. This is a ride you will not forget.

This movie is unexpectedly funny. Don’t worry, you have not seen the best parts in the trailer. It has honest plot twist and WTF, OMG, and HFS moments. The laughs are consistent and weaves in parts of the duos comedy act. Go to this movie expecting more 21 Jump Street, Rush Hour 1, or Ride Along 1 laughs. Keanu doesn’t take itself seriously like Barbershop. Go to this movie to have a good time. Full price is worth it.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars
