News stations report about a comet named Charlie. It will be the closest comet to fly past the earth since the dinosaurs.  Allie and John prepare a watch party with their neighbors and son, Nathan.  Before the party, Allie asks John to pick up a few items at the store.  During the shopping trip, John gets a presidential alert on his phone telling him to go to Robins AFB with his family and one suitcase each by 9:45 pm.  John looks around and sees no one else got the alert.  At home, neighbors already arrived, but John focuses on Allie.  She never saw the warning John got earlier.  Then, they all watch the comet.  It didn’t pass by. Instead, it hit Florida and sent a shockwave that measured 1500 miles wide.  As their friends watch in horror, the message pops on John’s TV and phone again.  His neighbors wonder why they didn’t get the same alert, but John doesn’t think about it.  He packs up his family and Nathan’s insulin and heads to the base.  While he drives out the neighborhood, neighbors beg to go or at least take their children, and against Allie’s pleas, John says no and keeps driving.  They arrive on the base and clear the checkpoint, but others come and beg the guards to let them inside.  Once inside the hanger, Allie can’t find Nathan’s insulin, and he needs it.  So, John tells Allie and Nathan to get on the plane while he goes back to the car and grabs it.  As they wait for John, an officer tries to escort them onto a plane, but Allie refuses and tells them they need to get Nathan’s meds.  The officer stops dead in his tracks and takes them to the commander.  She tells Allie that they can’t get on the plane due to their son’s chronic condition, and they are rejected.  John finally makes it to the plane but doesn’t see his family.  So he jumps off the plane and into chaos.  The uninvited people at the gate breached, shots rang out, gas spilled, and then, the airplane exploded.  Now, John, Allie, and Nathan are separated, and comet Charlie will destroy 75% of the world’s population in 48 hours.  They must find each other and make it to a bunker before they die.  They will face looting, murder, and kidnapping, but will they face death?

Let’s be honest, if you see Gerard Butler, just run.  No good follows him in a movie.  As they try to stick together, greed, jealousy, and wrath will pull them apart.  In the beginning, the story hints at issues in John and Allie’s marriage, but you don’t know the extent of their strife until later.  While some see this storyline as unnecessary, it allows you to see them reconnect and forgive.  One moment that will stick out is Nathan standing up for himself the second time he is at the base.  He refuses to let fear and evil dictate his actions.  In their moments alone, each character has clarity and strength during the darkest time.  While some may see this plot as far-fetched, in these times, it’s believable.  With all they do to survive, they still don’t know if Greenland is safe or just the next target on the comet’s list.  They only have hope and a chance to keep them going forward.
