Michael and his wife sing happy birthday to his daughter; then he heads to work as a bike messenger.  Metzi goes to work as an elevator dispatcher and tries to settle a bet with Eddie.  Eddie is a married father of 3 and custodial engineer.  Tina has decided to start her new life by going to her boyfriend’s job and ending their relationship.  Eve and Jeffery are finalizing their divorce.  Eve is tired of Jeffery dragging his feet and wants him to sign the papers.  Eddie, Eve, Jeffery, Tina, and Michael all step into an elevator when it suddenly stops.  They realized they are stuck.  Eddie hits the call button because he knows Metzi will be listening.  After a moment, Metzi tells them to hold tight.  The firemen are walking up 90 flights of steps to put out a fire caused by a small engine plane that hit the building.  Once the firemen have the fire under control, they will get help.  The 6 people will soon learn that America is under attack and they are in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001.  They must fight to make it out of the elevator alive with no help in sight and their only line to the world is Metzi.

Based on the play, Elevator by Patrick Carson, this movie follows all movies that have people from different walks of life, trapped together for a long period of time.  The only difference is that it’s set in 9/11.  They not only fear the elevator falling but they fear the fire, the impending collapse, and more attacks.  Even though Metzi’s on the line, her normal job is to dispatch help in these situations.  However, the elevator operator was evacuated and the firemen are trying to get to the fire while helping people out.  You have an idea of how it’s going to end but you don’t know who it will happen too. While it has moments of suspense, it’s still predictable.  Just wait for this one to come out on DVD.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

Quadir is a drug dealing, Muslim with several legit businesses around town and all over the east coast. After speaking with his sister Shoog, who cooks his crack, he focuses on having fun at the club. He spots Gena and tells the bouncer to let her into the VIP. But he doesn’t see Jerrell and his crew watching him. Jerrell, Rich, and Aubrey have been trying to merge businesses with Quadir for a while but to no avail. So when Jerrell sees Quadir working with the clubs owner he is furious. They believe he and his crew are bigger than Winston and deserve some respect and business. So they decide to get Quadir’s attention by “making someone famous”. They kill someone front of Quadir and his crew along with Gena and her best friend Sahirah. Quadir brushes them off as nothing more than local thugs and puts his attention on making Gena his woman. However, Gena dated a dealer in the past who became abusive. She doesn’t want to go back to that mistake. Quadir tells her that her ex-boyfriend was a boy and he is a man that has one foot out of the door to the game. Just as Gena and Quadir start to let their guard down, Winston and Sahirah are killed in a drive-by. Now Quadir has to decide which game to be true to, Gena or the street life.

Based on the novel, True to the Game: Part 1 by Teri Woods, this is the story of a woman falling for a converting bad man (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  She knows she can’t save him but she wants to believe he can save himself; despite each time he falls into the traps of “the game”.  While watching the movie, you will feel that something is missing from the book.  Whether it’s a storyline, character, or plot, something just feels hollow.  While this story does offer twist and turns, a realistic end, and a hopefully new beginning, something about it just feels wrong and rushed.  You want to make a connection to the characters, however, you just can’t.  If you are a fan of the book, leave a comment on what you thought of the movie.  If the movie follows the books, there will be a part two.  Although, it will probably go straight to DVD or TV.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

  1. I totally agree it felt rushed or if something’s were missing and it was missing. I thing they shouldn’t have modernized it but left in its time era. It was ok. I gave it an 8 out 10 because it did overall give us a move and some funny scenes. I think Manny did a good job for his first movie.

  2. I am a lover of True to the Game series. I felt the movie did a good job but did not give the book true justice. I’m not sure why they made Gina so innocent. She was hood and held her own. I was disappointed that they made her soft. They skipped her best friend funeral. Columbus Short did great as always. I hope part 2 and 3 change it up a little and Please don’t change up the killing spree that was written in the book.

  3. I’m totally crushing on Columbus Short & the scene where he is opening the door for Gena and smiling at her…..he can totally “Get It”. Too bad he gets killed moments later. I hv to read the books now!
