Cole comes into town as a hired gun for Bart.  On the way to speak with the MacDonalds, Cole runs into his friend and Sherrif JP.  JP tells him that Bart hired him based on lies.  Bart wants to con the MacDonald family out of their water rights.  Cole gives Bart back his money and a warning to leave the MacDonalds alone.  As he rides away, a kid shoots at him from the bushes and Cole shoots back.  After hitting the kid, Cole goes to inspect and see it is Mr. MacDonald’s youngest son.  And feeling that he would die, the young man takes his life.  Cole puts him on a horse and rides back to the MacDonald farm and explains what happened.  Most of the family forgives him, except for Joey.  Later, as he is riding, Joey shoots him in the back.  She goes to inspect, only to find Cole alive but badly hurt.  The doctor tells Cole he will heal but eventually, he would have to have the bullet removed or risk paralysis.  Six months later, Cole is feeling better and leaves town.  One of his first stops is to a bar to get a quick drink.  Soon after Mississippi walks into exact revenge on a man that killed his friend.  Cole watches this without stopping it until the man’s friend Nelse wants revenge on Mississippi.  Cole warns Nelse to stay out of it and let Mississippi go.  Nelse agrees because he was hired to do work for Bart, the same job Cole was hired for 6 months ago.  Cole sees that Mississippi is walking into a trap and stops him.  Cole warns Nelse to leave the MacDonalds alone or the JP will end him.  Nelse reveals that JP is a drunk and he will do what he wants to the MacDonalds because he is getting paid.  Cole knows he must get back to town, help is friend get sober, and save the MacDonalds from Bart.  All with a bad back that ceases on him.  But can he do it with Mississippi by his side, unwanted and unskilled?

This is the film is a great story that takes too long to tell.  All the love scenes could have been taken out and the film would still be valid.  While Joey was a revolutionary character for her time, Maudie was the typical maiden.  The dynamic between Mississippi and Cole was one of apprentice and master.  It was amazing to see the relationship build along with their character development.   The dynamic between Cole and JP was that of adversaries to respected equals.  Knowing each other makes them better men and fighters.  This is a good movie to watch on a rainy day.
