Within 2 hours, John loses his job, his car, his dinner and his girlfriend. He wants something new and fun in his life to give him something exciting. He has always watch the Army commercials and thought that would be fun to try. So after meeting with a friend, Russell (who thinks John is too old to enlist), John convinces Russell to sign up with him. During bootcamp, John’s sharp wit is used against his entire company because they are all punished when John angers Sgt. Hulka. After a few weeks, John is planning is escape when Russell stops him and they get in a fight. Once the Sargent hears about the escape attempt, the company are all punished. John decides to make it up to them by taking them all to a bar to live it up. The entire company is caught and Captain Stillman is at the end of his rope. He tells the company that if they do anything embarrassing at graduation, they will all have to redo bootcamp. Now with 3 hours to graduation, they have to whip themselves into shape and impress at graduation. And this is just half of the plot.
Stripes has one-liners you will be quoting for a lifetime. Along with interesting uses for a spatula and an ice cream scoop. Bill Murray and Harold Ramis deliver flat and easy humor like no one else. Of course there is unnecessary nudity and a crazy mud wrestling match, but the movie is just a fun escape. It does have moments of lull and could have been shorter, but seeing the camaraderie among the men in the company is a magnificent staple throughout the film. And be prepared for a fun character wrap up at the end.
