Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger wakes from a nightmare of what could have happened on US Airways Flight 1549 and goes to clear his head. As the world look at him as a hero, the National Transportation Safety Board doesn’t. Sully and the First Officer, Jeff Skiles are being investigated. The Board believes that the un-recovered engine had thrust capabilities and he could have landed the plane at a nearby airport. They believed Sully and Skiles risked the lives of everyone on board by not following procedure. This investigation causes Sully to question what he did and what he has done; and all while being under the uncomfortable spotlight of fame.

Based on the book, Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, Sully’s story is told through PTSD-like flashbacks (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). These flashbacks take him through his teenage years, military years, and that fateful day. These flashbacks are dizzying at times and make it difficult to keep up with the current timeline. Often, Sully and Skiles correct people who call this event a “crash” or “landed in the Hudson” as a “landing” or “landed on the Hudson”, respectfully. Beautifully expressed is the on-going drama after the landing and Sully and Skiles belief in their work, skills, and training. While there are no real bad guys (well maybe some bad birds), the human factor must always be considered.  Also, this movie feels like a tribute to the NY Waterways, ETMS workers, American Red Cross, Traffic Control, and NYPD’s finest … not just Sully.  You must see this movie in IMAX to get a feeling for the water, landing, fear, and extreme cold. And stay to see the survivors speak during the end crawl.  You will be moved.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars
