Disney’s Channel’s latest Halloween movie, Invisible Sister, is based of a book by Beatrice Colin and Sara Pinto (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It follows two sisters, Cleo and Molly Eastman.  Molly is a popular, lacrosse playing, positive girl who is noticed by all.  Cleo is a intelligent, sarcastic, self-imposed loner, that is noticed by none.  Both girls are strong in their own right, but both are missing something.  When Cleo’s teacher recognizes she is not living up to her potential, he ups the stakes by rejecting her science project proposal, giving her a harder project, and making it worth 1/2 of her grade.  Under pressure, she works on a science experiment … meanwhile her popular sister is having a party.   Somehow, Molly ends up an unfortunate result of her Cleo’s experiment.  Now, Molly will live like Cleo feels: invisible.  However, Cleo will have to pretend to be Molly.  Molly informs Cleo that she must attend all her classes in order to play in the biggest lacrosse game of her life and be seen by college scouts.  Now, Cleo will see what its like to be visible.  To make matters worst, the invisibility will become permanent by midnight if the girls don’t work together.

As an adult, you know how this story will end.  So, adults can go without seeing it.  However, there is an important message for kids.  Being invisible usually starts from within, but letting the world see the real you, will allow you to shine.  Also, being popular doesn’t mean your life is easy; its just harder for people to see your problems.  Every person is an iceberg, you will only see 10% of who they really are.  This is a great movie for kids and can be used as a discussion platform for parents.  It is worth it to watch it with your kids and discuss.

For Kids: I give it 4 out of 5 stars

For Parents with Kids: I give it 3 out of 5 stars

For everyone else: I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

When I am apart of something that is bigger than myself, … well … then I am not alone – Molly

The Unauthorized Melrose Place Story – Review

What do you do when you have a hit series like Beverly Hills, 90210? You spin it off and hope for the same success.  That spin off was Melrose Place.  Melrose Place had a dizzying array of characters and even wilder plot lines.  Darren Star, like with 90210, has to given into the pressure of the networks and his mentor, Aaron Spelling, for ratings and success.  But unlike 90210, Aaron and the network wanted crazy and sexy.  The crazier and sexier the show got, the better the ratings.  As time goes on, fans know that the writers did everything to keep them tuned in each week.  However, the fans didn’t know that Darren was irked by the direction of the show.  He had envisioned a show more like friends, not a nighttime soap opera.

Like Spelling, since Lifetime had so much success in this genre, they spun it off.  This Lifetime Unauthorized Bio movie, focuses more on the background of the show and a few of the main characters.  This is only because the show had so many actors.  Its easy to get confused on who is who and who is playing who’s character … confused yet?  Each actor balances their character and their character’s character well.  After seeing this bio pic, we should all examine what we watch.  Has your favorite show stayed true to is roots, grown for the better, or spiraled for ratings.  Fans on Melrose Place, will like this pick as a behind-the-scenes look at the show.   Non-fans shouldn’t waste their time.

For fans: I give this 3 out of 5 stars

For non fans: I give this 1.5 out of 5 stars

This is your shot.  My advice, is to start thinking about how to increase our ratings or both our careers are in the crapper … well yours anyway – Aaron Spelling

Dennis Nash, a construction worker, supports his mother and son.  But in the Orlando housing crash, construction work was not coming in and Nash could not pay his bills.  He tries desperately to work with the bank and the court, but to no avail.  His house is taken back by the bank with the help of Richard Carver and the sheriff’s department.   Richard gives the family 2 minutes to pack up everything they can before everything is put on the street.  While moving their belongings into a hotel, Nash realizes some items missing.  While confronting the eviction crew about his stolen property, Carver offers Nash a job doing construction, evictions, and “repairs”.   Nash’s only wants to earn enough money to get his family home back.  But how much of your soul are you willing to sale, just to get a piece of it back?

Just the opening scene shows you how desperate people are in those … well … these times.  The emotion of each tenant will pull at your heart strings.  All people, all races, all ages, and from all walks of life were met with a horrible knock at their door.  Also, you will be delve into the world of underhanded dealings, cash for keys scams, and a government that looked away for far too long.  You will become pissed off at Carver, but understand why Nash ‘does what he needs to do’ to get his home.  It will make you wonder, how far would you go.  Its easy to fall down a rabbit hole, if its paved with gold.  This movie could easily be based on a true story.  However, this film does not get at the root of the problem, just the aftermath.  The movie should have done a quick explanation of the bad mortgages and bulk loans done by the banks during the housing crash.

I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars

I didn’t take your house.  The bank did.  I just represent them – Richard Carver

Philippe Petit is a wire walker that demanded the attention of his audience.  Stepping in or on his circle was a true sign of disrespect to his craft.  Petit wanted new challenges of his wire; and with a crack of a tooth he found his greatest challenge yet:  The Twin Towers.  One by one, Philippe meets 7 accomplishes that will help him pull off The Coup on August (or Aout) 7th.  The team knows that what they will do is highly illegal and Petit could die (a word he doesn’t like to use), but they all believe in Philippe’s dream.  The film takes you through each step of the plan, all the close calls, and one bloody foot.  Is Petit an artist, purely insane, an inspiration, or all 3? You decided.

This film was shot beautifully and used 3D imaging to give the audience the true feeling of walking on a high wire. You will hold your breath at moments and feel your knees shake.  WARNING: If you are afraid of heights or experience vertigo easily, don’t see this movie in 3D. Joseph Gordon-Levitt worked with Petit in order to walk on the wire.  He mastered it with ease and gives the viewer true moments of awe.  This film is a mix of Oceans 11, a Petit biography, and a Twin Towers memorial all wrapped into one movie.  And one access badge at the end brings back the tragedy within the beauty of this film.  Although most of the movie is in English, only some of the French has subtitles.  It is up to the viewer to interpret or misinterpret what the actors are saying.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Magic Mike XXL starts with Mike successfully leaving the world of adult entertainment and starting a custom furniture design business.  Currently, its a 2 man operation but he is getting steady work and is living his dream.  Or at least he thinks he is, until he get a call from Tarzan.  That call leads to a crazy road trip from Miami to Myrtle beach for the 2015 Stripper Convention.  The 5 guy decide this will be their last ride … dance.

During this trip, mostly into Mike’s past, you learn each guy has their dream beyond the stage.  Tarzan is an artist.  Big Dick Richie wants love.  Ken wants to be an actor/singer.  Tito wants to make artisan frozen yogurt in a roach coach with Tobias.  You get a feeling that each guy is missing something that dancing will never provide.  After learning of these dreams, Mike decides the team needs new routines that reflect their desires, not just the personas Dallas provided in the 1st film.  Although Mike’s idea is meet with resistance, the team agrees.  The final dance is created and displays each dream at the Convention.

This movie steps outside the box by making the background characters, in the first movie, the focal points in the sequel. Magic Mike XXL isn’t a rehash of the first, ,but a coming-to-age/male-bonding movie with stripping.  Since this is a road trip, most of the dancing is not in a strip club.  The removal of the strip club, allows the dancing to go to the next level.  Now this movie does pander to women more by saying “You are all beautiful”, “You deserve to be worshipped”, etc. It will provide you guys with some great pick up lines.  And ladies, you won’t care about the plot line once you see the guys … dancing.

So for the first time ever, I will provide 2 ratings

For guys: 2 out of 5 – see it matinee to pick up single women and pick up lines

For ladies: 4 out of 5 – see the picture above

With a big budget and an even bigger cult following, the new Avengers movie had to live up to a lot.  The hype surrounding this movie stretched from the real world to the virtual world.  And it was worth it.  At times, these super hero movies feel rushed to make a quick buck.  However, Age of Ultron, was clearly thought out and carefully shot.  Each joke landed, you got to see familiar and new faces, and a few shocks and surprises for the most seasoned fan.

This movies is better than the first for two reasons.  Reason One: The Hulk did not appear as cartoonish.  Instead, the Hulk blended more naturally with the other characters.  It was hard to tell where the CGI began and ended.  Often, movie goers are taking away from the fantasy experience because of bad or too much effects.  This movie has learned form is predecessors with beautiful graphics that never miss the mark.   Reason Two:  They delve into each character to make you understand their passion and pain.    Each character appears as you wish they would be … real.  You find yourself caring about the characters more than their mission.

So, with that said.  I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars

If they shoot you, shoot back.  If they kill you, walk it off – Captain America.

The Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story – Lifetime – 2 hours

The Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story

Beverly Hills, 90210 dominated TV for 90’s babies.  The show dealt with teen domestic violence, gun violence, other teen issues. This Lifetime movie is the behind the scenes look at the actors, producers, and creators of the show.  These actors went from little-know actors to worldwide sensation in 1 season. While trying to demand respect from Hollywood, they were asked to leave restaurants, egged into club fights, and escaped crazed fans in laundry baskets .  Often, Aaron Spelling was the victim of late night calls due to sponsors complaints and Shannon issues.  Darren Star, one of the shows creators, was often met with harsh criticism because of the shows story lines and often caving for the “bigger picture”.

The only eye opening moments in this movie are the sponsors complaints and requests.  The Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story should be title, Everyone Hates Shannon.  It focused more on her and her TV persona, than the cast.  The movie even ends when she gets fired and Tiffani-Amber Thiessan joins the cast.   And ending with the Shannon’s firing, doesn’t deal with the shows true downfall.  The show went on for 6 more seasons without Shannon.  Even the actors’ wrap-ups were poorly done because they tried to be funny.  This movie was a waste of time, money, and talent.  This is the typical boredom that we have come to know and hate with Lifetime biopics.  Lifetime has failed again.

I give it 0 out of 5 stars
