Childhood Amy and Kim get a talk from their father about his impending divorce from their mother.   He tells them “monogamy isn’t realistic”.  For Kim, his advice goes in one ear and out the other.  Kim later becomes married with a step child. On the other hand, Amy takes this advice to heart and has a string of one night stands along a “boyfriend”, Steven (played by John Cena).  Amy is a successful writer; working at a magazine called S’nuff, and eyeing a promotion.  However, the current riff in Amy’s life is between she and her sister, Kim.  Their father, Gordon, is suffering from MS and needs to be placed in a nursing home.  Amy wants a nice place but since Kim is paying, Kim wants something cheaper.  Amy believes Kim financial clarity is due to her resentment from their father’s past indiscretions.   In order to get a chance at the promotion, Amy is given the assignment to work with a Sports Medicine doctor, Aaron Conners.  After interviewing Aaron, Amy has a one-night-stand with him that doesn’t go as planned.  This leads to both characters discovering their faults in their relationship and themselves.

This movie is a mix of Bridesmaids, Like Mike, The Break-up, and any romantic comedy.  At times this movie makes fun of itself for being a romantic comedy, which gives it charm and charisma.  However, with appearances form LeBron James, John Cena, Amar’e Stoudemire, and the Knicks City Cheerleaders, Trainwreck instantly becomes a perfect date movie.  You will have moments that you can’t believe what your heard, moments you wish you could say that in public, and moments that make you cringe because they are too YOU.  Laughing out loud is not an option nor is it done out of pity in this movie.  You will laugh at comedy from all the actors.  Trainwreck doesn’t give funny lines to just 2 or 3 actors, each actor holds their own.  And, you won’t see LeBron James or John Cena the same ever again.  This movie is worth seeing in the theaters at any time.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Inside Out goes into the mind of 11 year old Riley.  At birth, you can see Riley’s 1st voice in her head, Joy, appear.  And through out her life, you can see her other voices, Disgust, Fear, Anger, and Sadness, come along.  Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger all live and work in Head Quarters controlling Riley’s actions and thoughts.  The story picks up after Riley moves to San Francisco from Minnesota.  Although the move is rough for Riley, Joy tries to help her stay positive.

Inside Riley’s mind you will see her Island of Personality, Train of Thought, Long-Term Memory, Short-Term Memory, and a host of other amazing places.  While at the helm of Riley, Joy tries to keep Sadness away from the controls, Riley’s Core memories, and Short-Term memories.  When Sadness touches a memory, they change, which effects Riley’s thoughts of the past.  Its the 5 core memories that keep Riley’s Islands of Personality running.  The Core Memories are knocked out.  As Joy is trying to put them back, Sadness, Joy, and Riley’s Core Memories get sucked into Riley’s Long Term Memory.  While Joy and Sadness are gone, Anger, Disgust, and Fear are left to run Head Quarters.  With these feelings, along with no Core Memories at Head Quarters, Riley is losing her personality and wants to run away back to Minnesota.  Joy and Sadness must make it back to Head Quarters before all of Riley’s Islands of Personality are destroyed and cause Riley to feel nothing.

This movie will make you think about the way you think.  What are your core memories? Why do you feel the way you feel? What is the reason for your emotions?  This movie does have its tear jerk-er moments. It’s Disney and Pixar!!!  Remember Mufasa died and Andy gave up Woody.  Expect to cry!!!  Spoiler alert: both parents live.  Get their early enough for the short film and stay for the credits.  You will get a lovely treat.

I give it a 5 out of 5.

I cry candy.  Try the caramel.  It’s delicious – Bing Bong

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this day an F – Disgust

This movie is broken down into a behind the scenes look before 3 major releases in Steve Jobs’ life

  1. The Macintosh Launch in 1984
  2. The Next Launch in 1988
  3. The iMac Launch in 1998

Before each release, Steve interacts with Joanna Hoffman (Apple Marketing Executive), Chrisann Brennan (Jobs’ ex-girlfriend), Lisa (Jobs’ daughter), Steve Wozniak (Apple Co-Founder), and John Sculley (Apple CEO).  Each of these people are a window to the soul of Steve Jobs’.  Jobs was a visionary of computing and its users, however he often discounted and discredited those around him.  Each person wants to be acknowledge in their role in Jobs’ life, but Jobs can’t see others’ importance beyond his own ambitions.  Will Jobs change and give Wozniak’s contributions, his daughter’s paternity, or his customer’s rights to expand his product the praise they deserve?

Steve Jobs is a realistic view of a man that would be labeled the genius and visionary of the 21st century.  This is not the Steve Jobs you read about in a magazine.  This is the Steve Jobs only his “friends” knew and “liked”.  He is not glamorized and Michael Fassbender stars as Steve with frightening accuracy.  The wardrobe and make-up artist displayed the correct time period in fashion and technology along with properly aging all of the character.  The cinematography during Sculley and Job’s current and past conversations were magnificently edited and a joy to watch.   Although this is a good movie, some movie goers will have a hard time understanding the computer terminology.  Also, this movie felt a little too long for what was accomplished.  The movie could have been 1.5 hours long and still conveyed the same message and feeling.   You won’t feel cheated if you pay full price, but go matinee if you can.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

There are 3 types of people who see books-turned-movies

  1. The people who love the book, who understand that the whole book can’t be in the movie, but want little to no changes
  2. The people who love/like the book, who don’t care about the amount of changes. as long as it ends the same
  3. The people who know someone who read the book

Be assure that all 3 types will be satisfied with John Green’s latest film adaptation of his book, Paper Towns (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).

The story starts with boy meets new girl next door.  Quentin, or Q, is instantly in love with Margo Roth Spiegelman.  And this would be a typical love story, until one event changed their friendship.  Now in their senior year,Q is still in love with Margo, but Margo and Q could not be farther apart. Until, one night, Margo slips into Q’s window and ask for his help with her plan for revenge against a cheating ex-boyfriend and a backstabbing friend.  Q reluctantly agrees.  That night Margo completes 9 (yes, nine for those that read the book) tasks to get revenge.  The next day, Margo disappears.  This disappearance is nothing new for Margo.  Margo often runs away and leaves clues behind for people to find her.  This time Margo’s parents are through with her antics and refuse to look for her.  They believe she will come back when she wants money or she is bored.  Q will not accept this.  He wants to find the love of his life, Margo Roth Spiegelman.

Q, with the help of his friends Ben and Radar, find clues to where Margo might be and decide to find her.  Q, Ben, Radar, Angela (Radar’s girlfriend), and Lacey (Margo’s best friend) go on a road trip to help Q find Margo.  This road trip leads to Q discovering the meaning of a miracle, friendship, and love.

This movie has a rare intro from John Green thanking the crew, actors, and watchers of the movie.  For some this feels desperate, but true John Green fans know this is just John connecting with fans as he does through social media.  The movie feels like a better re-write to the book.  The key points of the book are there and John Green fans know why some parts were taken out.  It gives you an ending, a John Green ending, but an ending nonetheless.  All 3 people listed in the beginning of the review will be pleased.

I give this movie 4.5 out of 5 stars

Welcome back one, and all to Jurassic World.  And yes, this movie has the feel of bringing you back to the classic, Jurassic Park.  It even pays homage by “using the original arch from 20 years ago”, showing you the original mosquito, and a part of that cute DNA film.  They open the viewer to the park with a breathtaking view of the “City Walk”-esque portion of the park and through each of the attractions.  Like the first movie, you have a familiar set up:

  1. 2 children: 1 who is smart but afraid of everything and the other who is a sulking teen with all the knowledge to get them out of any situation
  2. Bad communication issues: Don’t you just love cell phones
  3. A park manager more concerned with money than people
  4. A people with ulterior motives for the dinosaurs

However, with this movie you learn that the Park Manager, Claire Dearing, knows visitors are not awed by a T-Rex, Velociraptors, or Stegosaurus.  Now, children ride baby Stegosauruses like they are ponies.  The park needs MORE.  And MORE is a new, genetically enhanced dinosaurs.  When a new dinosaur is introduced to Jurassic World, ticket sales go up.  The new dinosaur is called Indominus Rex.  Indominus Rex is a genetic mix of several dinosaurs and today’s animals.  This gives it new capabilities and higher intelligence. Of course, as a viewer, you know this will go wrong.  It’s more of a question of when it will go wrong.  Enter Owen Grady.  Owen is a Velociraptor expert and trainer, aka, the Alpha of a Velociraptor pack.  Owen is the voice of reason and alerts Claire to everything we know will happen.  To add to the mix, Claire’s two nephews, Zach and Gray, both visiting the park that day.  Clair doesn’t know their ages, hasn’t seen them in seven years, and has a park guide pick them up from the airport.  It doesn’t take long for the sulking older teen, Zack, to get annoyed, ditch their guide, and run off in the park with his brother, Gray.  If you saw the first movie, you know where this is going.

The new dinosaurs add to the heart pounding fear in this movie.  Not knowing anything about the new species allows you to wonder … what can it do next.  Also, this movie takes a page from horror genres by letting you see things moves, letting you see the victim’s fear, and letting you see the blood before you see the new dinosaur.  Your imagination works overtime of wondering how horrible Indominus Rex can be.

With all the great aspects of this movie, one thing it could use less of … product placements.   Starbucks, Pandora, Beats by Dre, Mercedes, and it goes on.  Its just too much and too obvious.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Every story ever told, can be broken down into 3 parts: the beginning, the middle, and the twist.

The Beginning: Zach and his mom, Gale, move from NY to Delaware because Gale accepted the Assistant Principal job at Madison High School.  Zack is not happy about the move, but maintains a positive attitude.  During the move, Zach meets Hannah.   Hannah, the daughter of the creepy next door neighbor, is a fun and adventurous with a quick wit.  Zach is smitten by her immediatly.  While bedazzling with his Aunt Lorrine, Zach hears screams that sound like Hannah coming from next door and decides to investigate.

The Middle: During the investigation, Zach and Champ, his new “friend”, find R.L. Stine manuscripts for Goosebumps books and learn that R.L. Stine is his neighbor and Hannah’s father (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Champ notices that each of the manuscripts are locked and wonder’s why a book would need a lock.  Zach unlocks a book and to his surprise, the abominable snowman materializes and leaps of the page.  The abominable snowman escapes the house; but during the escape, he knocks all the books of the shelf, which unlocks one.

The Twist: The character that’s released is the ventriloquist’s dummy named Slappy.  Slappy is vexed that R.L. Stine has trapped him in a book and left him on the shelf for years.  So, its time for Slappy’s Revenge.  Slappy unlocks books and then burn them, so Stine, Zach, Hannah, and Champ can’t capture Stine’s monsters.  Now the monsters are ripping apart the town, hurting the residents, and stalking Stine.  Stine, Zach, Hannah, and Champ work together, but they must figure out a way to capture all the monsters and save the town without the books.

This movie is a visual Goosebumps book (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  All the descriptions, twist and turns, and characters that Goosebumps fans have come to know and love are in this movie.  No matter what Goosebumps series you have read, there is a monster for you.  Now, you must understand that the monsters are created to look as they do on the book’s cover.  The monsters are more cartoon-ish than realistic. This animation make it easier for younger kids to watch the movie without getting scared, but still getting Goosebumps. Some of the jokes miss their mark but this is still a good movie worth seeing at a matinee.  So, go with the family and have a good time.  And don’t blink, or you will miss a cameo performance.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

You get out of here or the last scream you will ever hear is you own – R.L.Stine

Dope – noun \’dop\

  1. an illegal drug (such as marijuana or heroin)
  2. a stupid or annoying person
  3. very good

This movie covers a 3 definitions of Dope.  Dope follows a senior and Inglewood resident named Malcolm, whom has dreams of going to Harvard when he graduates.  Malcolm is in the process of having to write his essay for his Harvard application.   However, his first attempt, using Ice Cube’s Good Day as its foundation, was shot down by his adviser.

Malcolm finds solace performing in his band, called Awreeoh (pronounced Oreo), with his two friends Diggy and Jib.  They are picked on for being into “white people’s ‘stuff’ ” like skateboards, comics, punk music, and getting good grades.  Malcolm tries hard to not be the stereotype black male from a single parent household in the hood.  But he still lives in today’s Inglewood and has to deal with the problems that plague his hood.

Malcolm also loves 80’s hair, 80’s fashion, and the neighborhood beauty, Nakia. Dom, the local drug dealer, also has his eyes on Nakia.  Dom ask Malcolm to ask Nakia to come to his birthday party.  This leads to a Malcolm going back and forth between Dom and Nakia, until Malcolm is invited to Dom’s party.  Of course, Malcolm, Diggy, and Jib all go and have a good time … until a shoot out.  During the shoot out out, Malcolm, Diggy, and Jib escape unharmed and later discover they left the party with gift from Dom.   This gift leads the three into a crazy change of events with a cast of characters that are all interconnected.

Dope is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off mixed with Valentine’s Day mixed with The Wood with dash of Pulp Fiction.  This movie takes you on a wild ride into character development.  And just when you think you know Malcolm … you don’t.  Malcolm doesn’t fit in a box, not even the one he created for himself. Dope is just that … Dope.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

You shouldn’t settle for what is expected – Malcolm
