Walt sits in front of the parole board to earn an early release. They want to know how he has changed. He says he is sorry for his actions and wants to help the community he hurt. They grant him parole. He visits his ex-girlfriend, Ketta, to reconcile, but she wants to see more from him. Walt visits the local community center to use the computer. He looks out the window as the website refreshes and sees several boys attacking another. Walt runs out to help him. He warns the boy, Peanut, that he must fight back even if he will lose. Walt enters the center again, and the director, Slim, remembers Walt as the best boxing coach. Walt somberly tells Slim that he’s lost his passion for coaching.
After a night on the streets, Slim sees Walt walking past. Slim deduces that Walt is homeless and offers to let him sleep at the community center, but with a few rules. Walt can’t leave after Slim locks the doors, and he has to help train the boxers. Walt has no desire to be a babysitter. However, Slim believes it will help the young boxers, the center, and Walt. Can Walt overcome his demons while strengthening his community?
Based on the documentary and news article, this film quietly centers around the spark of triumph. These young men need Walt’s guidance and to learn to lean on their neighbor to grow. Walt reignites his passion and uses it to regain his family and freedom. The director used practical sets to highlight the film’s underground theme. And the editor created thoughtful cuts between boxing lessons and the boys’ lives. When he warned against watching the clock, it showed the boys in school staring at it. And the editor cuts from being punched in the mouth, changing one’s plans to a boy’s family member passing away. It helps the audience understand that they are learning about more than throwing a punch. This movie has great storytelling, dedicated actors, and words of wisdom. It’s for any young person who needs to hear and see it.
