Jack Ryan sits quietly on the bench when he notices someone is following him. He looks up and makes eye contact with James Greer. James wants to hire Jack for a friendly handoff after his meeting in Dubai. Jack reminds James that he’s a civilian now. James knows this cover isn’t making Jack happy, so he assures Jack that Mike will be with him. Mike greets Jack, and Jack relents. Jack will meet with Nigel Cooke to retrieve information he obtained during a mission and return it to James.
Jack finishes his business in Dubai and meets with Nigel. Nigel is upset because he doesn’t trust anyone but James with the information. Instead of giving Jack the intel, Nigel gives Jack an empty pack of cigarettes before someone kills him. Jack, with Mike following close by, runs after the attacker. However, they lose him when MI-6 officer Emma stops them.
Emma informs Jack that the killer was Liam Crown. Liam was a member of Project Starling. It was a group of ex-military operatives formed by James to perform secret missions without government oversight. James admits to creating the group but swears he disbanded it. However, Liam has resurrected the group to prove it’s needed. Liam threatens to kill James if Jack doesn’t return what Nigel gave them. Jack admits that he hid it and never told James about it. He agrees to retrieve the information and return it to Liam. However, things go awry, and someone dies. Jack seeks revenge and gets pulled deeper into a life he left behind. Will he be able to pull himself out?
This movie moves like Mission: Impossible but doesn’t quite capture your undivided attention (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The themes aren’t unfamiliar to fans of the genre. However, the acting is spot-on and compelling. Unlike other action films, this film has an unmatched dry humor that expertly breaks apart the action. The stunts are well timed, smooth, and masterfully choreographed. They become part of the story instead of a distraction. The violence doesn’t just happen for bloodlust; it drives the plot forward. It keeps your interest. Fans of the series won’t be disappointed.
I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars
Of course, you would choose a bookstore – James
Just letting the office know I’ve been kidnapped – Jack
Are you checking a bag – Mike
Find your boy Jim. Or I will – Liam
That would be unethical – Emma
This man is the tip of that spear – Elizabeth
