Her Deadly Night in Paris – Review

Her Deadly Night in Paris – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Lucy meets Antoine at the docks. He is the son of her host family. She gets in his boat, and they sail down the river to his home. Antoine’s mother, Madeleine, greets Lucy with open arms and playfully scorns Antoine for not carrying Lucy’s bags. Lucy meets Antoine’s father, Judge Remy, but he maintains some distance. Lucy overhears Remy’s stern warning to Antoine in French. He warns Antoine to pull up his grades or face the consequences. Antoine asks permission to take Lucy to lunch, and Remy gives Antoine a delayed yes.

Antoine privately admits he doesn’t want to follow in Remi’s footsteps. Antoine wants to be an artist. He has a secret loft and paints in his spare time. Lucy is happy Antoine found something he loves but hates that he has to hide it from his family.

Lucy and Antoine meet outside school on Friday, and she plans to study. Antoine convinces her to have some fun on the weekend and go to a party. Antoine can’t conceal his jealousy when Lucy swoons over DJ Vincent. But he promises to introduce them later if she would like. Before Lucy can meet the DJ, Antoine sees Vincent’s parole officer enter the club. Antoine grabs Lucy, and they stay in the closet all night and kiss.

Antoine drops Lucy off at his parents’ house but leaves for his loft. Lucy walks up the driveway and sees a man arguing with Remy. Remy gets a knife and stabs him, and Madeleine cries over the man’s body. Remy tells Lucy he was protecting himself, but self-defense is harder to prove to Paris police. If Lucy tells the police, Remy and his family will lose everything. He asks Lucy to open the back door, and he will hide the body. Lucy complies.

Lucy comes home after school to find Lt. Laurent in Remi and Madeleine’s living room. Laurent informs Lucy that a man, Gaston, is dead, and Lucy’s DNA is on his body. Laurent arrests Lucy and takes her to the station. When Laurent’s questions heat up, Lucy requests a lawyer and an embassy representative, but Laurent tricks Lucy into answering more questions. Lucy realizes there is no way the French government has her DNA on file, and they can’t make a match that fast. Remy is setting her up, and Laurent is helping him. With quick thinking, she is on the run with Antoine. They must clear Lucy’s name before she loses her freedom, or worse, her life.

This movie drags in the beginning, but the wait sets up the false narrative Lucy sees about her host family. They display a loving mother, stern father, and playful son. As Lucy penetrates the façade, she sees Remy’s controlling nature. Lucy isn’t a damsel in distress waiting for someone to save her. She uses low-tech solutions, quick footwork, and intelligence to stay one step ahead. This film is a mix of the Amanda Knox story and Miss Bala (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Also, Remy and his goons are pure idiots. The journey is worth it if you survive the first 30 minutes.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

The More Love Grows – Review

The More Love Grows – HMM – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Helen and Paul sit outside their daughter’s dorm after sending her to college for the 1st time as a pre-med student. Helen asks Paul not to drive away because their daughter, Aly, may need them. Paul reminisces on their life before Aly and wants to return to their roots as a couple. However, Helen loves their lives as parents. Paul drives Helen home before leaving for a business meeting in Denver.

Helen sits with her friends for dinner and looks at her watch. Paul should be home now but hasn’t met them at the restaurant. Helen calls Paul and discovers he’s at home waiting for her. Helen comes home and finds Paul standing in the living room. He got the job in Denver and wants to move but without Helen. Helen stands in shock because their 20th anniversary is in two weeks. Paul leaves, and Helen sinks into her seat. Helen hears a knock at the door and assumes it’s Paul. However, it’s a dog.

For days, the dog has been in her yard. Helen isn’t a dog person but notices he doesn’t have a collar. She brings him inside the house and calls her friend, Ben. Ben is in his 4th year of veterinary school. Ben is happy to help and offers to find the dog’s chip to locate the owner. Helen thinks the dog will be a one-night visitor. However, the animal will guide her to a new purpose, a sense of self-worth, new friends, and love.

The family’s fragile dynamic is evident in the first 20 minutes. Helen’s mother, Sue, is a marriage-focused woman. She urges Aly to find a husband in college and begs Helen to stay with Paul. Paul lives with his head in the clouds and looks to his past instead of his future. Helen is a lost, empty-nester with dreams but doesn’t know how to fulfill them. She has to learn to stand up for herself before growing. Aly goes to college with a plan but throws it out the window to become well-received. Paul and Helen decide to keep the divorce a secret from Aly so she can focus on college. Throughout the movie, Helen handles the separation maturely, and it’s refreshing. However, Helen doesn’t make herself a martyr. She owns her faults in the marriage. This movie will have you feeling all the emotions.

My Son Didn’t Do It – Review

My Son Didn’t Do It – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Helen and Judy discuss their busy work lives and children. Helen beams with pride because her son, Taylor, won a prestigious award. However, he is an introverted gamer coping with bullying. Helen’s daughter, Gia, is a social butterfly but hates being compared to Taylor. Judy’s son, Miles, plays soccer and has the potential to earn scholarships, but his grades are lackluster. Helen invites Judy and Miles to dinner to celebrate Taylor’s award.

Gia arrives late to dinner and spies Taylor texting a girl. The girl is Emma, and Taylor hasn’t met or talked to her because Emma has a text-only policy. Gia and Miles discuss attending Sophia’s party but learn Sophia didn’t include Taylor. Miles tells Taylor to come anyway, but he doesn’t feel comfortable crashing the party. Gia calls friends and discovers that Taylor has an invitation. She convinces Taylor to party and bring Emma.

Taylor works on a chemistry project with Sophia. She sticks up for Taylor when Lucas starts bullying Taylor. Taylor smiles at the pretty girl’s attention and floats to his locker, but his mood changes when he sees a threat inside his locker. Taylor finds Gia and hears her making fun of him to her friends. She apologizes and tells Taylor to inform their mother about the threatening note. But Taylor decides not to disclose it.

Gia goes to Taylor’s room, but Taylor doesn’t want to attend the party because Emma isn’t answering his text messages. Gia tells Taylor to call Emma, but it goes to voicemail. Taylor decides to stay home. Gia and Miles dance the night away with their friends.

The police knock on Helen’s door. Someone found a girl dead in the woods. Helen thinks of the worst-case scenario and asks if it’s Gia. Police tell her Taylor murdered Sophia, and they are there to arrest him. Helen tries to explain that Taylor was with her all night, but they have video evidence of him in the park with Sophia. Helen can’t deny the evidence but knows Taylor isn’t a killer. Can she prove it?

The plot gives viewers plenty of suspects because of their shady behavior. Helen’s co-worker, Jack, slinks around her office and comes to her home at all hours of the night. Lucas leaves threats for Taylor, while Miles’s friend, Delaney, obsesses over Sophia’s relationships. Even Gia and Taylor have skeletons in their closet. Also, the audience slowly uncovers the killer with Helen and Gia. So you watch with bated breath as everything unravels. The final fight scene will make you laugh, but this movie allows you to enjoy the ride.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

That was not cool – Taylor

Please just forgive me, ok – Gia

I know in my heart that Taylor is innocent, but where did he go last night – Helen

Trapped in the Cabin – Review

Trapped in the Cabin – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Romance writer Rebecca drives to a remote cabin owned by her manager, Jason. She wanted to leave the press tour to write her next book. So, he offered to let Rebecca stay in his cabin for a few weeks. He warns Rebecca that the upstairs is in repair, but everything she needs is on the first floor. Also, the cell reception is spotty. If she needs to call, her cell must have a WiFi connection. He sends the WiFi password and door combination. Rebecca’s mom, Ms. Collins, calls with a list of worries. Last month, someone broke into Rebecca’s home and took her workout clothes. Also, Ms. Collins worries someone is stealing Rebecca’s mail. Rebecca thinks her mother is wrong about the mail. However, the police believe the stolen clothes to be a one-time prank.

Rebecca marvels at the lush cabin and its amenities while making herself comfortable. She settles in for the night and goes for a jog in the morning. Rebecca meets Nathan during her workout. He warns her to watch out for bears, but he doesn’t know she is a famous author. Rebecca calls her friend, Maddison, and gossips about the cute neighbor. Later, Rebecca prepares a bath, but the water is freezing. She texts Jason, and he sends a plumber immediately.

Nathan knocks at Rebecca’s door and fixes the tub. Rebecca throws caution to the wind, kisses Nathan, and shares a passionate night with him. Afterward, Nathan reveals he had a drinking problem but remains sober today. Rebecca wakes up from bliss to find Nathan gone and the house trashed. She furiously texts Nathan and calls out his rude behavior, but he doesn’t answer. Rebecca calls Ms. Collins for advice, but Ms. Collins brushes it off as a bad one-night stand. Rebecca decides to put it behind her and focus on work. But the person stalking her with security cameras won’t let her. Can Rebecca escape the cabin alive?

This movie is old-school Lifetime at its finest. Rebecca’s cabin checks all the boxes because it’s remote, has poor reception, and it’s in the middle of a snowstorm. Rebecca runs in the middle of nowhere with snow on the ground and ignores blaring warning signs. When the plot reveals Rebecca’s stalker halfway into the film, it ramps up the creep factor. Rebecca spirals into a depression when she feels she has no way out but gains the strength to keep fighting to make more mistakes. The movie will have you yell at Rebecca in frustration one minute and yelling for her to survive the next. The script is a whirlwind of emotions that old-school Lifetimers crave.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

A Safari Romance – Review

A Safari Romance – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Megan guides guests around the nature preserve for a photo safari. She works as a ranger while finishing her PhD. Megan has three weeks to complete and use a presentation to defend her work. However, she hasn’t spotted her subject, the white lion. Megan must finish her thesis before leaving Africa to justify her argument.

Eric arrives at the hotel with his videographer, Darius. Eric wants to capture images of the animals for his immersive safari experience thrill ride. Eric bumps into Megan and asks about the photos displayed in the lobby. She bashfully admits that it’s her work. He wants to buy them, but she offers them for free because they aren’t for sale.

During an outing, Megan notices a drone flying above. She discovers that the drone belongs to Tim. She tells Tim he can’t use the drone because it disturbs the animals. Also, poachers use them to track and hunt the animals. If the owner catches any of Megan’s guests using a drone, she could lose her ranger’s license and her thesis subject. Tim and Darius promise not to use the drone again.

Megan and Tim get closer with each excursion. Then, Amy arrives. Amy and Tim dated. Now, she’s there to tell him she is his boss. Her father put her in charge of the theme park division. Amy joins Megan and Tim on their next trip to see the animals. She offers ideas, and Megan denies them because they are too dangerous or encroach on the animals’ environment. Amy relents, but the owner spots the drone later and threatens to take Megan’s license if she doesn’t fix it. Megan confronts Tim, and he swears it wasn’t him. Will she lose faith in Tim and their relationship, or will the culprit come forward to clear Tim’s name?

This film has everything you expect. Boy meets girl, girl focuses on work, ex-girlfriend comes back, and boy and girl have issues while falling in love. It’s nothing viewers haven’t seen before from Hallmark. This movie stands out because of the scenery, animals, people, and conservation details. The plot slips in information about the environment without preaching to the audience. You stay awe-inspired while learning about nature. Don’t cancel plans to watch this movie. But save it on your DVR for later.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars
