Brian Brown-Easley stands outside Wells Fargo and thinks about his daughter and ex-wife. He walks inside and enters his information on a deposit slip. Rosa, a bank teller, calls Brian to her counter and makes small talk. He quietly asks Rosa for a piece of paper and writes a note. It reads, “I have a bomb.” Rosa looks at her bank manager, Estel, with unbridled panic and fear in her eyes. Estel walks to the customers and staff and tells each one to leave quietly. Everyone but Estel and Rosa get out before Brian tells them to lock the doors. They offer to give him money, but that’s not what Brian wants. He wants Rosa and Estel to get news reporters and police on the scene. For months, Brian felt ignored and unheard. Now he will make sure the world hears him. The VA and Lincoln College of Technology stole his money, and he wants the VA to pay it back.
Based on ‘They Didn’t Have to Kill Him’: The Death of Lance Cpl. Brian Easley by Aaron Gell, this movie covers many topics plaguing US veterans, including homelessness, PTSD, job insecurity, and the VA. It’s painful to watch this caring man fight for the little money he had. In the opening scene, people observe as security officers drag Brian out of the VA in handcuffs. The VA worker knows the VA and the for-profit college did something wrong, but they are slow to fix the problem. For the soldiers that give everything for the US, it’s disgusting that they have to jump through hoops to get anything back. Your heart will sink when Brian says the amount he’s fighting over. For some, this film feels like John Q (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). However, it’s real, and no one got a happy ending. Maybe, this movie will be the first step to righting some wrongs.
I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars
The VA is FUBAR – Eli
I’m sorry – Brian
I can’t move – Rosa
I’m the manager – Estel

Identical twins June and Jennifer decide not to speak after enduring horrific bullying in school. Their teacher doesn’t believe their school can help the girls open up, so he sends them to a new school with a new teacher, Mr. Thomas. Mr. Thomas tries different techniques to get the sisters to talk, but it doesn’t help. During equestrian therapy, he sees Jennifer willingly fall off the horse, and June mirror Jennifer’s actions. He determines the sisters are a bad influence on each other and chooses to split them up. Both girls fall into a deep depression without their sister. After a few years, therapists decide to bring them together. They fall deeper into their silence and start looking into writing school. They join a creative writing course by mail and start putting their active imaginations to paper. After several rejections from publishers, the now young ladies decide they need to experience love and romance to write about life. This choice should be the beginning of growth, hope, and strength. But for June and Jennifer, love and romance lead to drugs, institutionalization, and death.
Based on The Silent Twins by Marjorie Wallace, this movie uses Jennifer and June’s writing to narrate their story (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). And the director used claymation to bring the viewer into their rich fantasy world. The writer never judges June, Jennifer, or the system throughout the script. So, viewers feel like flies on the wall during their life. Both sets of actresses ensured they walked, talked, and moved in step with each other to express the twin’s immense bond. Also, the pair needed each other but brutally attacked each other several times. They would get into physical and verbal altercations throughout their lives, often stemming from jealousy, betrayal, or fear of alienation. This movie will strike a chord in you while leaving you with more questions about June and Jennifer.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars
Yea, I can see you see me. Keep walking – June
I’m good. I’ll eat when I’m gone – Jennifer
If you were telling your story through me, how would you want it to begin – Marjorie
