Farrokh Bulsara finishes his job at Heathrow Airport and heads home. He doesn’t stay for long. He announces to his family that he is heading to meet friends and going by the name Freddie. Freddie watched Don’t Forget to Smile perform and loved their show. After the show, he went to find the band and found Mary. That split-second connection would lead to a short love affair and life-long friendship. After meeting Mary, he found Brian and Roger but no Tim. They told Freddie that the band was over because their lead singer/bass player just quit the group. Freddie responded that Tim leaving meant they were looking for another singer. Bonus he could also write songs. Roger – dental student – joked that Freddie couldn’t be a singer with his teeth. Freddie started to walk away but turned around, squared his shoulders, and sang. Brian – an astrophysicist student – only had one question: Do you play bass? Freddie said no as he walked away. And it was then that Queen was born (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). With John – electrical engineer student and bass player, these four men took misfits, outsiders, and the world on a ride that will span decades and outlast death.
While this movie is being touted as a movie about Queen, it’s more about the effect Queen had on Freddie Mercury and vice versa. You learn more about John, Brian, and Roger’s creation of Queen’s biggest songs. Queen is still the only band in history with each member writing a #1 single. You will hear your favorites, Another Bites The Dust, We Will Rock You, Bohemian Rhapsody as the group gets bolder (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Queen never wanted to follow other bands or repeat their own songs. So they dropped the formulas and decided to get experimental. They used trash cans, coins, and gongs in a single session and added opera to rock-and-roll. But as the group got bigger, Freddie’s loneliness deepened. He wanted true friendship and love. Instead, Freddie got hangers-on and users. It will take Freddie’s solo career for him to find his real family and book the biggest concert ever performed, Live Aid. This movie will make you laugh, tear up, and dance. See this movie today and be prepared to sing along (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).
I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars
Can you give us a second – Brian
How could you – Freddie
You had no voice – Mary
