Ellis “Red” Redding has been the inmate with connects for 20 years in the Shawshank Prison. Red’s days are the same until a new batch prisoners arrive. Among the new prisoners is Andy Dufresne, an accountant. Andy was given 2 life sentences for kill his wife and her lover. At first, Andy keeps to himself, by strolling along the yard, doing the laundry, and reading. Until one day, Andy asks Red to get him a rock hammer. Red is concerned what he will do with it, so Andy promises not to hurt anyone with the hammer. And Red provides. Once Red sees the hammer he is amused and the two create a friendship. As time goes on Andy starts using his accounting skills to gain the trust of the officers, prisoners, and the warden. Then Andy’s world is rocked when a new prisoner named Tommy Williams comes into Shawshank with life-shattering information. After 19 years, this information could be used to set Andy free.

This theatrical masterpiece is funny, charming, and smart. Every detail in the movie is critical to the plot and pulls you closer to each character. Shawshank Redemption doesn’t pull punches when discussing the long-term effect of prison life on a person’s psyche and the abuse that happens in prison. Based on the book The Shawshank Redemption by Steven King, this film adaptation brings the characters in full color (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The makeup artist did an amazing job of slowly aging the men as the decades past. It’s easy to see how movies like The Hangover 3 got inspiration from this film (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). This is a must-watch movie that stands the test of time. See it before someone ruins the end or the beginning or the middle – just see the movie.
