Rescued By Faith: The Connie and Larry Von Oosten Story – Review

Rescued By Faith: The Connie and Larry Von Oosten Story – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

2 Corinthians 5:7 – For we walk by faith, not by sight

Retirees, Larry and Connie, enjoy time with their family, participating in church activities, and spending time together. Larry makes plans to meet with his son, Jeff, after Jeff returns home. Also, they will watch their granddaughter’s game tomorrow. Larry and Connie turn in for the night and fall asleep. Soon, a stranger’s presence wakes them. Larry jumps up to attack, but the masked person shoots Larry with a stun gun. Larry seizes on the ground, and Connie runs to check on him. Through a voice changer, the culprit forces Connie to handcuff Larry. He leads them outside and into his car. The kidnapper drives them to an abandoned home and guides them to a hidden cellar. Connie and Larry don’t know what the man wants, but Connie fears Larry’s asthma will flare up in this dust-ridden room. The offender lets them know he wants all their money. He will keep them in the cellar until they sign their life away. He handcuffs Larry to the wall and leaves them alone. Connie and Larry believe the wrongdoer will kill them once he has their money. They need to find a way to survive and outsmart him. Luckily, they have faith on their side.

Based on the novel, Rescued by Faith by Eric A. Selene, this film is a nail-biter (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The plot gives you a ticking clock because Larry’s health declines while inside the cellar. Viewers sit on the edge of their seats as the police and the Von Oosten family work together to find their parents. While the movie will have you waiting with bated breath, the culprit’s motives will knock you out. The script slowly reveals the kidnapper and his background to the viewers. Cleverly, the Von Oostens remember him after the audience learns everything about him. The storytelling leaves zero lulls and connects the viewer to the survivor. And viewers of another faith shouldn’t skip this film. It’s for everyone.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

Don’t Trust The Couple Upstairs – Review

Don’t Trust The Couple Upstairs – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Joe and Maria had a whirlwind romance, got married, and bought a farm. They left the crushing city life behind and bought Archford Farms. It’s a return to Maria’s upbringing, but she knows they will need help to get the operation running. Maria facetimes with her friends, Brooke and Amber, to show the new place and the potential baby room. Joe posts a video for live-in help. Clay and his wife, Vickie, answer the post and meet Joe and Maria. At first, Maria doesn’t like them because Clay is dismissive of Vickie’s feelings. However, Joe believes they are the best for the job.

Days later, Clay and Vickie move upstairs. Maria hears them arguing at night and navigates around Clay’s personal space. Joe and Vickie easily get along, much to Maria’s chagrin. Vickie invites Maria to go shopping, but Maria is painting the spare room. She tells Vickie to go without her. Maria finishes sooner than she thought and calls Vickie to let her know she will meet Vickie in town. Maria walks to the lake and finds Vickie’s body floating. She screams and calls the police. The police and Maria think it was an accidental fall. However, Joe worries someone attacked her. When Clay goes missing, Joe’s suspicion grows. Maria wants to forget until she learns that Joe and Vickie had a past. Now, she fears her husband killed the couple upstairs. Can she uncover the truth?

This film has a compelling plot with a unique angle. The wife is typically the person who insists that the police investigate further. In this film, Maria tells them to stop and declare it an accident. She, not the husband, is the one who wants to put everything behind them and move on. The husband’s awkward behavior prompts her to push for an investigation. The plot lays breadcrumbs to the truth, but the final reveal is shocking. The motive is sad, and the pacing is slow, but the mystery is compelling. This film deserves your full attention.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Picture Perfect Sister-in-Law – Review

Picture Perfect Sister-in-Law – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

After surviving the Carousel Killer, Parker gave up investigative reporting to teach. She instructs her students to trust their instincts and follow leads. She left her home in the city and now lives closer to her brother, David, and his wife, Kate. They have two children: Wendy and Sam. Parker dotes on them and enjoys spending every moment with them. Parker visits but notices something is off with Kate. Kate ignores phone calls and jumps when someone knocks at the door. Parker enquires about Kate’s behavior, but Kate says it’s nothing. Then, Parker asks Kate about Kate’s neighbor, Harvey. He recently asked if Parker went by another name. Kate laughs at the interaction and blames it on Harvey’s peculiar nature.

Later, Parker arrives at Kate and David’s home. The police cars stun her. Harvey died, and the police labeled it an accident. However, Parker doesn’t believe them. She begs them to look into Harvey’s case. After a string of incidents, Parker finds a toy carousel outside her home. She puts on a brave face until Kate gets one. Parker fears that a copycat or an admirer is working for the Carousel Killer. Can she unmask the culprit before they harm her family?

This film had potential, but the title gives away the twist. The viewer knows the Carousel Killer is a red herring. Parker is wasting valuable time looking in the wrong direction. It’s not until she has a gun in her face that she puts it all together. The culprits’ monologue is so unhinged, it’s hilarious. Some would say it’s somewhat valid. The final fight scene is poorly edited, and other scenes are too dark. Your mind will wander for an hour before mentally returning to the movie. It could have been even better with a more engaging title, improved editing, and better pacing.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

If the hair on your arm starts to stand up, take note – Parker

A Royal Setting – Review

A Royal Setting – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Queen Ivy will crown her son, Prince Luca, the king of Gullion, at his coronation ceremony. She will display the crown jewels for the first time since her husband passed. They were placed in the family vault and haven’t been touched since. Ivy wants the royal gemologist to care for the jewels, but Luca contracted outside help. He saw an article naming Ruby the world’s best gemologist. He hires Ruby to clean them.

Ruby arrives in Gullion, but her cab gets a flat tire. She doesn’t want to be late. So, she grabs her bags and runs toward town. She bumps into Luca but doesn’t know who he is. He is smitten with her and offers to help her take her bags to the palace. Soon, Luca’s royal assistant, Zander, bumps into him. Luca assumed Zander didn’t follow him. Zander keeps mum while Luca helps Ruby with her luggage. When Ruby arrives, she meets with the queen’s assistant, Countess Finella. Finella disapproves of Luca’s break from protocol, but she shows Ruby her working quarters and the vault. Luca meets with them and formally introduces himself as the Prince. He puts Ruby at ease and shows her his compassionate side. As the pair bond, Finella and Ivy keep watch. They want Luca to marry Finella’s daughter, Jory. But Jory is in love with Zander. Will Luca break tradition for love?

This film breaks from the Hallmark setup because Luca divulges his secret identity early. This plot change allows Luca and Ruby to be honest with each other from the start. It packs a comedic punch with Ruby’s interaction with the palace guard. The turmoil isn’t between the characters. However, it’s between traditions. Luca isn’t thumbing his nose at all of them. He wants to return to some of them. Ivy closed off the palace after suffering a heartbreaking loss. However, he detours from tradition for his love life. Knowing when to shine makes Luca a worthy future king. Also, it makes this film watchable. It’s a cute American-meets-prince story, but with a lot of heart.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars
