It’s been five years since the interstellar comet Clarke hit the Earth, wiping out 75% of the population. The survivors inside the Thule Airbase bunker in Greenland tried to venture out 9 months after the blast. However, the radiation and sporadic debris showers made inhabiting the area impossible. John puts on protective gear and explores the land for supplies while his wife, Allison, works on the board. They strategize about the group’s survival. Their son, Nathan, now 15, attends school with the other kids in the bunker. The survivors work diligently to obtain a new normal.

John retrieves items from a shipwreck, fixes issues around the bunker, and meets with his therapist. His prolonged exposure to the surface has left him with a cough. Allison has noticed, but John assures her that he’s fine. Allison sits with the board and discusses whether they should abandon the bunker and look for greener pastures. Doctor Amina and other scientists determined that Clarke’s initial impact point has become an oasis. While they don’t have proof, the science supports her hypothesis. Then, a debris field hits and crushes the bunker. John, Allison, and Nathan barely escape with their lives. Everyone runs to the shoreline and battles over abandoned life rafts. The family, Doctor Amina, and other refugees board the liferaft and sail away, leaving others to perish on the shore. They decide to travel to England, the location of Clark’s initial impact. They hope to find the rumored oasis. Will they survive with their family intact?

This sequel follows the same formula as its predecessor. It opens with John narrating the past and present. So viewers don’t have to see the first to jump into this movie. The script shows you how people survive the confines of the shelter. Then, everything collapses. The family escapes one nightmare, but deals with soldiers, looters, insurgents, and terrorists. You will constantly wonder what could possibly go wrong next. This pacing keeps the audience entertained and invested. This film sneaks in an important character arc for John. He made a gut-wrenching decision in the first film, but rectifies it in this one. The graphics aren’t groundbreaking. However, they blend evenly with the film. The conclusion did try to invoke tears, but that won’t happen. Fans of the first film will enjoy this one. This picture lives up to the hype, but it doesn’t leave you with an urge to buy.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars
