Maureen cleans herself up after her father, Joe, spots Maureen’s ex-husband’s car in the driveway. She forgot it was Karim’s day to pick up their daughter, Amina. Maureen is uncomfortable with Karim alone with Amina, but Joe says a father has a right to his children. When Maureen picks up Amina, she believes Karim is acting strange. Days later, Maureen purchases Joe’s medication from a pharmacy and loses sight of Amina. She searches for the young child but can’t find her. She contacts the police. Maureen alerts them that Karim is a Syrian national. During their divorce, Karim threatened to take Amina to Syria. The police officers stare at each other. There is nothing they can do because Karim is a legal parent. Maureen screams and storms out of the station.

Years later, Maureen’s community raises funds for her to travel to Washington, D.C. Maureen will ask lawmakers to help her find Amina and change the laws. They ignore her pleas. Maureen sits by her hotel pool and considers another plan of attack. Robeson approaches her with an offer. He works in international child recovery. He needs a woman on the team for extractions. If she helps him find other missing kids, he will help her locate Amina. After some prodding, Maureen agrees to join his team. Will Maureen find Amina?

Inspired by actual events, this movie combines high-octane action with lulls of dialogue. You may miss the cross and double-cross. The actors deliver an amazing performance. They evoke fear and urgency as they save children around the world. The vanity team made them look tired and unkempt as they traveled covertly. While the action is compelling, it’s the conclusion that will resonate with parents. You must remember that Amina is brainwashed, so her actions are understandable. Maureen’s uphill battle will break your heart. This film is best for the small screen and finds the right home on Lifetime.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

The Past is Never Buried – Review

The Past is Never Buried – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Noah interviews Emily for a documentary about her mother’s murder. Someone killed Emily’s mother, Ginny, but the case remains unsolved. Noah enquires if Emily’s father, Alton, would like to participate, although Noah already asked. Emily says no. In the past, Alton was Detective Gates’s number one suspect, but he couldn’t find enough evidence. Later, Noah meets with Emily’s uncle and aunt, Pete and Deena. They answer all his questions, but worry that Alton got away with murder. Noah arrives at Alton’s home, but Alton pushes him. Noah’s cameraman, Deeks, captured the encounter, while Noah ensured they got it from different angles.

Brad asks his son, Devin, to wake up Devin’s sister, Jordyn, for breakfast before school. Devin goes to Jordyn’s room, but Jordyn isn’t there. Brad calls Jordyn’s phone, but she doesn’t pick up. Brad and Devin rush to the police station to report her as a missing person. Detective Gates takes the case. He visits Jordyn’s workplace and questions the staff and customers. One customer, Alton, catches his eye. Later, they find Jordyn’s remains in the woods. Her killer strangled her. Detective Gates uncovers that Alton’s car was seen on surveillance cameras at the time of Jordyn’s kidnapping. Afterward, Detective Gates obtains a search warrant for Alton’s home and finds photos of Jordyn inside. He arrests Alton.

Alton calls Emily from jail and begs for her help. He believes Detective Gates is setting him up for murder because he couldn’t solve Ginny’s case years ago. Detective Gates blames the District Attorney, but the town faults him. The judge sets Alton’s bond at $2 million. Alton reminds Emily that his home is in her name. He asks her to sell it quickly and bail him out. During Emily’s visit to her childhood residence, she uncovers clues that prove Alton is telling the truth. But if he didn’t kill Jordyn, then who did? And is it connected to her mother’s case? Can she find the truth before Alton is sentenced to life in prison?

This film presents a complex mystery with 20 years between cases. It does offer an unnecessary love story with a play on modern voyeurism. This movie feels like a Dateline episode with overzealous cops, a compelling killer, an enabler, and several points of view. The writers slowly reel the audience in with family conflict over an old murder. Then, they keep your attention with a new crime. Emily makes several mistakes throughout her investigation. However, Alton stays one step ahead. He is the film’s MVP. The writers ensured the motive was shocking and horrific. Lifetimers, sit back and enjoy this messy show with your tea and popcorn ready.

The Nurse Who Knew Too Much – Review

The Nurse Who Knew Too Much – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Nurse Sarah makes the rounds after celebrating her boss’s birthday. Sarah meets with her boss, Charge Nurse Alison, to discuss her patients. Everyone’s favorite is Jack. Jack is a baker who had to get an emergency appendectomy. Another is Jack’s hospital mate, David. Both men are recovering from their procedure, but are still heavily medicated.

Sarah finishes with David and walks over to Jack. Jack makes a few comments, then admits to killing people. He brags about them begging to live and the life draining from their eyes. The utterance creeps Sarah and David as she leaves the room. Sarah tells Alison about Jack’s admission, but Alison says it’s the medication. It makes patients confess to secret lives, jobs, and missions.

After some strange occurrences in the hospital, Sarah asks her friend, Sheriff Mark, for assistance. He agrees to look into Jack’s past and his confession for more information. Nevertheless, Mark warns Sarah he will stay within the confines of the law. Will Mark prove Sarah right, or is she accusing an innocent man under the influence of medication?

This film starts with a wild premise. It’s equivalent to someone confessing their sins to a priest. Then, Sarah sticks her nose into other people’s business and puts her life in danger. This plot point lasts for the majority of the movie. It’s meant to heighten your intrigue. However, it fails. The writers cause Sarah’s actions to complicate things. And she puts others’ innocent lives in danger. The final 20 minutes provide a strong twist and a harsh narrative. This change will compel the audience to sit up and pay attention. This picture proves the nurse knew something because she was too nosy.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars
