A Very Merry Beauty Salon – Review

A Very Merry Beauty Salon – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Sienna opens her beauty salon, and her friends, co-workers Ella and Miss Kimmy, aren’t far behind. Everyone is happy that the Tinsel Ball found a new co-sponsor. With 14 days until the festivities, they were worried this would be the first year without the ball. Sienna’s mother, Georgia, enters and directs Sienna to the back of the store for a private conversation. Georgia is upset because she saw Sienna’s ex-husband, Greg, with his new girlfriend. Sienna doesn’t care because she asked for their divorce. This year, the Tinsel Ball will honor Sienna’s contributions to the neighborhood. The honoree gets a spotlight dance. Georgia wants Sienna to have that time with someone special and offers Sienna options. Sienna plans to dance with her friend, Kyle.

Sienna works, and a man, Lawrence, walks into the salon. He’s opening a tasting room and introducing himself to local business owners. They flirt, laugh, and exchange business cards. Then, Georgia yells at him. Lawrence is the new co-sponsor. She assumes Lawrence is there to enforce his new ideas for the ball. He makes a hasty exit after saying goodbye to Sienna. Georgia tells Sienna that Lawrence’s using his financial influence to make the ball about his wine. Georgia won’t let him. However, Sienna can’t ignore her attraction to him. Can Sienna pursue a relationship with her mother’s enemy?

This heartwarming story has three stages of love. Kimmy is a widow who mourns her husband. Sienna and Ella see its effects on her. They think dating will help. Ella is a military girlfriend. She prays her boyfriend can make it home for the ball. But she questions if she can handle another deployment. Sienna wasn’t looking for love, but it found her. She ponders if she is making the same mistake with Lawrence as her ex-husband. These women lean on and encourage each other to step out of their comfort zone and into love. This film is a mellow watch for the holiday season.

Private Princess Christmas – Review

Private Princess Christmas – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Princess Violet fails another task when Wingravia is watching. Her mother, the Queen, grows tired of Violet’s irresponsibility. She demands to know Violet’s mission for her time on the throne. Violet dodges the questions and talks about her future title. The Queen doesn’t believe Violet is ready. She thinks her brother is a more suitable option. Violet gawks at the idea of her uncle on the throne. However, he has a plan. When Violet’s uncle acted unfavorably, his father sent him to a boot camp in Colorado. They set him straight, and he believes it will help Violet, too. Violet thinks it is ridiculous until the Queen’s stipulation. Violet can only get the throne if she graduates boot camp. Violet agrees.

Captain Ryan works at the customer service desk at a big box store. He deals with one entitled customer after another. Then, Ryan sees his commanding officer standing in front of him. Chesterfield Academy needs a new leader for its recruits. Ryan was the most successful but left after a deadly fallout with his best private. The officer wants Ryan to return. Ryan agrees after the next entitled customer.

Ryan gets the rundown of their recruits from his right-hand Squibby. They have Marlena, a raging K-Pop star. Tucker, an Atlanta Falcon who isn’t a team player, and Bobby, a corrupt crypto-bro. Sateen, a self-absorbed prince, and Noelle, a world banker’s daughter. Finally, Princess Violet is joining them. Ryan sighs. He gives the lay of the land and takes their technology. He will teach them the core principles of the boot camp to get them on the right path. However, Princess Violet won’t give in easily. She is happy to cut corners and will teach others the same. Ryan refuses to let her take control because he doesn’t want to lose another recruit. Can Violet pass boot camp and get the throne?

Viewers shouldn’t watch this movie if they are in the military. Ryan has a rough approach, but you expect that. No officer would ever let a cadet disrespect them the way Violet does. She hopes the boot camp will have Christmas decorations like American movies. The script allows Violet to recover because Violet has a kind heart for those in need. Also, she changes her ways when Ryan shows the proper amount of Christmas spirit. The other cadets improve, too. This movie can kill two hours, but you can skip it this holiday season.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

Perfectly fine if you have no respect for the crown – Queen

A boot camp? A stiletto camp I can consider – Violet

Tell me more about those cadets – Ryan

They’re flawed, but at least they’re trying – Squibby

You Better Watch Out – Review

You Better Watch Out – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Aubrey works with a therapist to overcome her fear of flying. Her sister, Tracy, will have a baby soon. Aubrey packs, boards the plane, and prays to make it there before her nephew arrives. Sadly, a snowstorm grounds Aubrey’s plane. She can’t leave the regional airport with several passengers. She walks to customer services to get a new flight. She stands behind a couple, Jon and Leigh, arguing with the representative. Jon leaves in frustration and bumps into Aubrey, breaking her phone. She runs after Jon, yelling. A security guard, Officer Armstrong, blames Aubrey for the mishap and threatens to arrest her if she keeps screaming. Aubrey returns to the representatives and gets a morning flight, a restaurant voucher, and directions to the nearest duty-free store.

Aubrey goes to the store and purchases gum and a burner phone. The clerk, Graham, says the phone isn’t great, but it will get her through the night. Aubrey sits at the terminal and has a funny conversation with snowboarder Finn. Finn looks at the other stranded passengers and makes up humorous backstories for each of them. He mirrors the Home Alone tale about janitor Jed (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Aubrey leaves for dinner, and Claire takes her order. Vivian sits across the bar and asks to join Aubrey. The women talk about their travels and family. Finn joins them as Aubrey tries to call Tracy. However, she can’t get a signal. Claire informs Aubrey about a great signal location in the parking lot.

Aubrey walks to the parking lot and hears strange sounds inside a white unmarked van. She calls for someone inside, and they make noise. Aubrey opens the door and finds a girl, Chloe, inside. She has a gag in her mouth and is handcuffed behind her back. Chloe doesn’t know who took her or why. Aubrey starts to untie the girl but hears someone in the distance. Aubrey fixes Chloe’s restraints, exits the van, and hides. Aubrey returns to the airport but doesn’t know who to trust. She must save Chloe without losing her life. However, the kidnapper is at the airport. Who among the stranded kidnapped Chloe?

This film is Clue in an airport. As Aubrey gets new information, the viewers go with her (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). And the plot doesn’t wait until the last 15 minutes to reveal the culprit and motive. You will get it within the first hour. Afterward, it is a cat-and-mouse game. Aubrey’s life is on the line, and she gets the other passengers to assist. The phone lines are down, the airport has one security guard, and no one will be there until the morning. The pressure is on, and it’s unique. Aubrey makes stunning errors, but the conclusion makes up for it all.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

One year ago, Jenny attended the high school holiday dance with her mother, Melanie. Melanie spent time with Jenny’s English teacher, Daniel, while Jenny hung out with her friends. Melanie couldn’t stop worrying because Jenny had forgotten her headphones. Jenny has autism, and loud music can trigger her. But Jenny told Melanie she would be okay. Then, artificial snow fell from the roof. Melanie found Jenny hiding in a panic. Jenny doesn’t like snow. They went home.

Today, Melanie asks Jenny if Jenny wants to attend the school dance. Jenny remembers the snow and says no. Melanie worries that Jenny isn’t getting the complete high school experience. So, she joins the PTA to make the holiday party more inclusive. She wants to turn down the music, eliminate the strobe lights, and remove the snow. The PTA president rebuts the changes because the current student body loves them. Melanie asks for time to do a proof of concept. The president says Melanie can’t be without a faculty advisor. Daniel signs on to help. Melanie tells Daniel she wants to change the party without telling Jenny.

Jenny joins her friends, Bella and Caitlin, in school. Jenny sees teens harassing a young man, Will. She stands up for Will, but he doesn’t speak. Jenny believes Melanie is unhappy that Jenny isn’t going to the dance. Melanie does so much for Jenny, and Jenny wants Melanie to smile. So, Jenny decides to put on a dance for all students. It will have softer music, fewer lights, and no snow. However, Jenny wants it to be a surprise. Her friends are thrilled to help. Mother and daughter have secret dueling parties, but their lives have another new twist: love.

Jenny and Melanie’s lives mirror each other while they plan the parties. Both have new friends, interest, and romance. Jenny, like most teens, is finding her independence. She wants to apply to colleges in California, much to Melanie’s chagrin. Melanie created a center to help teens with autism navigate school and work. She learns to let go and practice what she preaches. The movie does a magnificent job of displaying the spectrum of autism. It causes hindrances, but it doesn’t make Will or Jenny incapable. This film is a loving movie to share with the family.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

The Christmas Quest – Review

The Christmas Quest – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Archeology Professor Stephanie Baxter lectures her students at Hearst College about The Magnus Olafsson manuscript. It discusses the Yule Lads Legend, but historians believe the margins contain the clues to treasure. Stephanie’s mother, Joan, has searched for the treasure for years. Joan’s search ended unexpectedly, but Stephanie doesn’t know why. However, Stephanie was glad to have her mother home. Joan died without finding the treasure.

Stephanie returns to her office and finds a man, Victor, scanning her bookshelf. He wants Stephanie to locate the Yule Lad Treasure. Stephanie reminds Victor that she can’t start without a cryptex, a Yule Horn, to decipher code along the margins (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). He uncovered the horn’s location among ancient runes and will fund Stephanie’s trip.

Stephanie finds the horn and uses it to decode the markings in the margin. However, they’re written in ancient Norse. Victor asks if Stephanie knows someone who can translate a dead language, and she knows of one. It’s her ex-husband, Chase. They fly to Boston to meet him on his parents’ Christmas tree farm.

When Stephanie arrives, Chase glows. Then she tells him about the quest, and his annoyance grows. He left him during monumental events for hunts, which caused their divorce. So, her return for a pursuit is heartwrenching. He rejects the quest, and Stephanie and Victor retreat. But Stephanie knows to wait. Moments later, Chase returns to help because no one else is available. Stephanie and Chase will search for the Yule Lads Treasure but must stay mum to keep other treasure hunters off their trail.

This film differs because Stephanie and Chase aren’t finding love but rediscovering it. This quest has the twists and intrigue of a Hallmark Mystery movie without the murder. Chase and Stephanie globe-trot unveiling new holiday traditions and uncovering the meaning of love this Christmas season. They follow each lad’s clue to something amusing and compelling. One pivotal moment brings Stephanie closer to her mother and helps her see her past mistakes. It will strike a chord with all Hallmark viewers. This quest will have you glued to your seat.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

A Bluegrass Christmas – Review

A Bluegrass Christmas – UPtv – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Katie rehabs horses with her parents, Don and Sarah. Jim Breckenridge enters the stables looking for his horse, Chocolate. He wants the horse to work with a trainer to prepare for the next race. Katie says Chocolate isn’t ready to race. Although he feels better, he could break his leg again if he races. Jim doesn’t care and demands the horse now. When Katie refuses, Jim decides to cut the sanctuary’s funding. He reminds Katie that he is their biggest benefactor. Don knows their sanctuary will close in January without Jim’s money. Jim leaves with his horse and donation.

Katie visits her grandfather, Ben, at her grandmother’s grave. Ben stopped playing music when he lost her. Katie updates Ben on losing Jim’s funding. Ben isn’t worried about Katie. She can get a vet job in the city. He worries about Don and Sarah making ends meet. Now, Katie blames herself and promises to find a way to fix it.

Katie visits the stables and complains about Jim to Don. Then, a man, Grant, asks what his father did to upset her. Katie grumbles because she assumes Grant is like Jim. However, Grant understands Jim is stubborn. He warns Katie that Jim won’t budge and invites her to coffee to create a plan.

Grant and Katie converse. He plays music in a garage band, and she loves to sing. They both have a passion for bluegrass. Grant asks if Katie has ever heard of Big Hickory Ben and the Blue Mountain Revival band. Katie knows the band because Ben is her grandfather. Grant can’t believe he is in the presence of bluegrass royalty. Grant gets an idea. They can have a bluegrass fundraiser for the sanctuary and have Ben play. Katie doesn’t believe Ben will play, but she will ask. This one question will stir up 20 years of pain. Can Katie and Grant save the horse sanctuary?

This movie has new and classic holiday songs with a bluegrass soul. The moments with Ben and Katie will warm your heart, but everything else falls flat. The Finnish Line – Review

The Finnish Line – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Anya will travel to Finland with her best friend, Elyse, to compete in the Joulurauha Dog Race. Anya competes for her father’s honor. Years ago, Anya’s father, Hans, participated in the race during a snowstorm. A competitor, Monte, purposely hit Hans. Hans broke his leg and lost the race. However, his nurse became his wife and Anya’s mother. Hans retired after that match and raised his family in the States. Later, Anya became a famous dog sled racer but took time off to care for Hans. When Anya learned Monte would be in the next Joulurauha, she decided to enter.

Anya and Elyse arrive in Finland to a swarm of reporters. Anya’s cousin, veterinarian Lavi, pulls them away. He looked forward to their visit and sent a 14-page e-mail about Finland’s famous sites. Later, Anya meets and eats with the other racers. When reporters hound her again, she dodges them by hiding under a stairwell. A man, Cole, offers help. Then, Lavi exposes Cole as a reporter. Anya becomes angry at Cole’s deception. However, Cole wants to prove he is different from others in his profession. He wants to do an in-depth piece about Anya and her return. Cole believes there is more to Anya’s story than avenging her father. Anya agrees to let Cole document her progress as she races for family glory. But will something else be waiting for Anya at the finish line?

This movie is an easy watch for dog lovers. Most of the plot is predictable until Monte’s monologue. Viewers discover the man behind the antagonist. He isn’t a simple jerk but a complex competitor. The love story between Lavi and Elyse is amusing and sweet. They are two kind people who see more in each other than themselves. You will cheer for their love. Hallmarkies should watch this movie with your pups.

Believe in Christmas – Review

Believe in Christmas – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Beatrice isn’t a Scrooge but doesn’t give in to the conformities of Christmas (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). She has a regular black coffee and spends the holiday with her best friend, Emilia. They watch holiday movies and eat sweet treats. Emilia has a fun surprise. Emilia entered into a contest and won. She got an all-expenses-paid trip to Christmasland. It promises to make your holiday movie come true. She begs for Beatrice to come. For weeks, Beatrice says no. Later, Beatrice tells Emilia that her boss rejected her story proposal again. The editor wants a personal touch to the article. Emilia believes a story about Christmasland will spark the passion the editor needs.

Carol owns the North Pole Inn and started Christmasland. The small community joins the fun and becomes bit players in the show. Christmasland is so successful the town changed its name. Carol’s son, Ethan, hugs her, and she gives him a list of chores. He has small jobs to complete around the Inn and one more for Christmasland. Ethan wants to leave big city life. He will return home to run the festivities this year.

Emilia and Beatrice are driving to Christmasland when they get a flat tire. When Emilia sees the object in the road, she believes it’s part of the show. She waits for a handsome stranger to appear in a tow truck like her favorite films. Ethan arrives but not in a tow truck. He offers them a ride to Christmasland, and Emilia bounces with joy. Beatrice’s worry is on full display. Carol greets them at the Inn and deciphers their personalities. She puts Ethan to work. As Emilia fully embraces the magic of Christmasland, Ethan will show Beatrice the wonder of the holiday. Will he show her more?

This movie, based on Christmasland by Anne-Marie Meyer, has an adorable concept (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Emilia points out the movie clichés as she searches for them. The town has a festival, a bake-off, streams of hot cocoa, and potential meet-cutes. All the while, Beatrice finds them with Ethan. Beatrice’s attitude towards the holiday doesn’t stem from anger. She grew up in the foster system and never had a chance to create traditions. So, Beatrice spends the holidays with Emilia. This movie is a relaxed watch for a Hallmarkie.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars
