Maverick rides to the site to test the new aircraft.  Chief Warrant Officer 4 Hondo tells Maverick that the project is over.  Since the new aircraft hasn’t reached MACH 10, the government doesn’t want to invest more money.  Maverick expected to hit MACH 9 today, not 10, but the commander, Rear Admiral Hammer, is coming to give them the final verdict.  Maverick decides to fly one more test before Hammer arrives to end their program.  When the commander enters, Maverick is in the air and at MACH 7.  He successfully reaches MACH 10 but goes slightly over and lands in the middle of nowhere.

Maverick arrives to take his punishment.  Hammer thinks Maverick can’t get a promotion, refuses to retire, and won’t die.  But Iceman got Maverick a new assignment.  They tell Maverick to report to Top Gun to train Top Gun graduates for their next mission.  A foreign government will have enriched uranium in 3 weeks unless US forces can take out their bunker.  This mission would be easy.  However, mountains surround the bunker, and missiles with GPS are on top of the mountains.  The current planes can’t make the trip, so they have to use two F/A-18 Hornets and two F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.  And they have to fly these aircraft at a speed, altitude, and incline at which the engineers didn’t design for them to do.  Iceman believes Maverick is the only pilot that can teach the graduates the maneuvers for the mission.  Despite instructing in the past, it only lasted two months.  However, Maverick decides to train the graduates until he sees one team member: Rooster.  Rooster is the son of Goose, Maverick’s wingman that died in training.  Maverick can’t face him and doesn’t want to teach.  However, Vice Admiral Cyclone’s original plan doesn’t mention the graduates coming home.  Maverick finds this unacceptable.  He will train the graduates to complete the mission and survive it.

Sequel to the 1986 Top Gun, this movie gives you the expected and unexpected action, thrills, and chills of its predecessor (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Along with an unnecessary love story.  Viewers need to see this film with the loudest speakers because the engine’s roar will shake your seat.  As the pilots go faster, you can feel it in your bones.  While it’s easy to jump to conclusions about Rooster blaming Maverick, it’s an incorrect assumption.  Rooster knows that Maverick wasn’t the cause of Goose’s death.  However, there is a deeper story to their strained relationship, a story we discover during the movie.  The writers made sure not to alienate their Top Gun fans.  It has the same opening crawl, intro music, and jacket as the first.  If you didn’t see the first movie, the script covers Goose’s final moments with the song Great Balls of Fire as a mental trigger.  It entices new fans with actual aerial maneuvers, new characters, and military planes.  You can feel the difference when the director strips away the CGI.  It is a sight to behold and meant for the big screen.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

It’s the only one I got – Maverick
