Nancy Drew lands at the police station after exacting Restorative Justice against Derrick for using social media to humiliate her friend Bess. Now, Nancy has to serve 8 hours a day of community service for the rest of the summer. While cleaning up trash outside of the police station, Nancy overhears Helen and her great aunt Flora talking to the Sherriff. Every night Flora hears strange sounds, sees a ghostly figure, watches her lightbulbs blow up, and wakes up with a horrible headache. She believes she is being haunted by Malcolm’s ghosts. Nancy is intrigued and wants to hear more but Helen doesn’t want her help. Helen is angry Nancy embarrassed her boyfriend Derrick. However, Flora loves Nancy’s spark and gets her out of that day’s community services to tell her the full story. In the 1800s, Malcolm and Skylar were brothers and pig farmers. They were in love with the same woman. The woman was promised to Malcolm but she ran off with Skylar. Malcolm killed them both and put their bodies in the walls of the home where Flora resides. Then, Malcolm killed himself. The bodies were never found but it is believed that Malcolm haunts the home til this day. Nancy is ready to investigate the haunting. This investigation will lead to threats, a kidnapping, a hidden staircase, and Nancy on the wrong side of a gun.
Based on The Hidden Staircase by Carolyn Keene, this movie is as fun and as intriguing as the book (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Original Nancy Drew fans shouldn’t worry. Technology is introduced for the purpose of communication and video capture. It doesn’t ruin the overall story. Nancy uses her wit and intelligence to gather the clues around her, even in times of distress. She also has the help of her two best friends George (computer whiz) and Bess (chemistry whiz). Nancy’s exuberance and strength to go into any situation are welcomed on screen. This movie is for all genders and will show kids how your worst enemy can become your best friend. However, the haunting scene may be too much for kids under 7. See this movie with the whole family.
