Its been a year since Lena’s husband Kane went on a military mission and never came home. She is in total shock when she turns around and sees him standing in their home. She asks him where he has been but he has no answers. She notices that blood is coming out of his mouth and rushes Kane to the hospital. In route, they are forced over by police, Kane is taken out of the ambulance and Lena is given a sedative. Lena wakes up confused and being question by Dr.Ventress. Once Lena assures Dr. Ventress that she knew nothing of her husband’s mission or his whereabouts, Dr. Ventress alerts her to a pressing situation. Three years ago an object struck a lighthouse and grew. It has gotten bigger and they call it the Shimmer. If they don’t figure out how to stop it, the Shimmer could take over the world. They have sent several teams inside but only one person has made it out: Kane. Now Dr. Ventress, Lena, Anya, Josie, and Cass will go inside the Shimmer to collect data, learn, and figure out how to destroy it.
Based on the first novel in The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer, this movie is very pleasing to the eye (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The beautiful mutated flowers are placed in ways to distract you from the horror that will happen. After a while, you will see the horror of the beauty. You must pay attention when Anya goes over the reason each woman volunteered to be in the Shimmer. These women are smart and strong but they all have a reason to be on this suicide mission. This is a fun, visually stunning, and breath holding movie that will leave you with just as many questions as it does answers. See it at matinee price.

Rhiannon gets a ride from her sister Jolene every day to school and thinks it will be a typical day. She apologizes to her boyfriend Justin for texting all night. But he surprises her with a ditch day. They spend time at the beach and really talk for the first time. The next day, Justin remembers almost nothing and is angry at Rhiannon for making him miss practice yesterday. But Rhiannon’s new shadow Amy is quick to her defense. The next day, at a party, Justin is ignoring her but Nathan gives her all the attention in the world. Finally, Rhiannon gets a text asking her to meet up. She believes its Nathan but finds Megan sitting there. Megan explains she has been Justin, Amy, and Nathan each day she met them. Megan explains that it is an entity that wakes up in a different body, the same age, every day. It can tap into that person’s memory and leave something behind in theirs. And it calls itself ‘A’. Rhiannon realizes she is falling in love with the spirit in all of them. But can their love make it to the next day?
Based on Every Day by David Levithan, this is a different kind of teen love story with a little Time Traveler’s Wife thrown in (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Having so many actors playing this one entity is done seamlessly and surprisingly well. They all have the same calm and peace in their voice when they speak to Rhiannon. It’s easy to see them all as the same person. And while this movie may not have the dream ending, it has the right one. Teens, see this at matinee price. Everyone else, wait for RedBox.
I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars
So do your balls – Jolene
You don’t have to text me every time I text you – Rhiannon
Can I kiss you – ‘A’
