Part 1: Little

Nicknamed Little, Chiron is teased and chased by the other boys. He hides in an abandoned apartment until he is found by Juan, a local drug dealer. Juan takes Little home to meet his girlfriend Teresa. Teresa instantly takes a liking to Little, feeds him, and lets him stay the night. With her kindness, Chiron finally speaks. It may just be a few words, but he finally speaks. The next morning, Juan returns Little to his mother Paula. Although it won’t be the last time Juan and Paula see each other, their meeting leaves a strong impression. Little, slowly disconnected from his mother, connects to Kevin. Kevin tells him that he has to be hard and not let the other boys pick on him.

Part 2: Chiron

Now a quiet teenager, Chiron hates being called Little. Teresa is a pseudo mother since Paula’s addiction to crack has destroyed their relationship. However, Teresa is happy to oblige because Chiron reminds her of Juan, whom is now deceased. Chiron school life is not going any better than his home life. He is still being picked on by other boys and only has one friend, Kevin. After spending the night on the beach, Chiron feels safe with Kevin by his side. That is, until Kevin is ordered to attack him by other boys in the school. Chiron is left bruised, bloody, and confused. A teacher tells him he has to be a man and talk.

Part 3: Black

Nicknamed Black by Kevin, Chiron is now a quiet grown man and a drug dealer running a trap house in Atlanta. He is going through the motions when he gets a call from Kevin. Kevin is a cook in Miami and wants to mend fences with Black. After visiting his mother in rehab, Black drives from Atlanta to Miami to see Kevin at the restaurant where he works. The two talk and Kevin asks Chiron a question he has never been asked … “Who are you really”?

Broken up in 3 parts of a male’s life (boyhood, teenager, and adult), you will take a trip into the psyche of Chiron. With very few words, each actor is able to convey a depth of emotions. Chiron tries to wear an armor of machismo to disguise who he really is, but the people who love him know the truth. Juan, Teresa, Paula, and Kevin wants Chiron to discover his truth but on their terms. The score, imagery, and acting was beautifully spot on and deserves to be recognized. The three actors for Chiron and Kevin seamlessly mends 3 parts into 1. This is worth full price and deserves a discussion. So, who are you really?
