Brian runs to Aunt Madea’s home after hearing his son, BJ, disrespect the importance of HBCUs. He realizes that BJ doesn’t understand the issues in the African American community. And he isn’t properly prepared to handle how others may perceive him despite his accomplishments. BJ plans to drive from Georgia to Pepperdine University with this friends. Brian asks his father, Joe, and Madea for help. Madea suggests Joe take BJ on his road trip, teaching BJ about his culture along the way. Brian recalls the hard-knocks lessons that Joe taught him and refuses to let Joe be alone with BJ. So, Madea and Joe kick Brian out of the house. Later, Brian changes his mind. He tells BJ that the trip with his friends is cancelled. Then lies by informing BJ that Joe is dying. He tells BJ this is the last time he will be able to spend time with his grandfather. BJ agrees and drives his electric car to Madea’s home. However, Joe refuses to drive around in a Duracell and demands that they drive his car. Madea makes snacks but doesn’t understand that BJ is vegan and gluten-free. As they drive down the road, BJ pulls out his phone to use the GPS. Joe takes it from him and throws it out of the car. This pimp with a 3rd grade education will teach BJ a lesson in African American culture, food, and history. But will BJ survive the trip unscathed?

The film starts with Joe’s background and warns the viewers about his language. Like most Tyler Perry comedies, this film is wild and shocking, but ends with a compelling footnote hidden in the images. Tyler made Brian a man between two worlds. Joe was a hard and inappropriate father. Brian swore to be a better father than he was. However, he realizes he overcorrected and hadn’t prepared BJ for a world outside his community. BJ appears to look down on African American history. Joe isn’t Brian’s first choice, but he proves to be the best option. This movie could teach viewers a lesson. However, the message will get lost in all the mayhem. This picture is what you expect and doesn’t venture off Tyler’s comedy formula.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

When he come back, he gonna be scarred – Joe

I didn’t raise him to see race – Brian

Joe, I am getting ready to stab him – Madea

I’m not gonna make it – BJ

Leah’s friends, co-anchor Brenda and make-up artist Treese, meet Leah outside their job and squeal. Today, their boss, Dan, will pick the new showrunner. Leah knows the job is hers. Until Dan calls her into the office and says the higher-ups don’t believe she is a team player. They want to bring in someone from the outside to see if they are a better fit. Leah is still in the running, but she must prove herself. Leah’s competition is Jarrett. She knows the name too well. They dated in the past, and he cheated on her. Since then, she’s avoided him.

Jarrett arrives, and everyone, except Leah, greets him warmly. She gives Jarrett a cold handshake and shows him to his office. The crew meets with Dan to discuss Valentine’s Day programming. Leah rolls her eyes at the concept of love. She wouldn’t consider falling in love unless the man checked off all 70 of her boxes. Then Jarrett presents an idea. He’s read a book called Relationship Goals. It helped him reimagine what love is, refining his aim. Jarrett dates with intention, throwing away his player card. Secretly, he’s still in love with Leah. Dan loves the idea. He wants Jarrett and Leah to work on the feel-good segment together. Jarrett says yes. As Leah starts to reject the job, Dan mentions that she’s not being a team player. She grits her teeth and agrees. She will take over the project, produce quality work, and eliminate Jarrett. Will she succeed, or will Jarrett win her over?

This film, inspired by the novel ‘Relationship Goals’ by Michael Todd, is a Lifetime movie with better wardrobe or a Hallmark movie with sex appeal (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Outside of the main storyline, Treese and Brenda also have relationship problems. Brenda’s boyfriend doesn’t want to commit, and Treese rarely has a second date. Viewers know how the film will end, so you look forward to the laughs. The script places them few and far between. Between three storylines, the film drags. The comic relief of Treese and Leah’s assistant, Roland, shines in this picture. This film is for the rom-com lover with a slightly spiritual focus.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

You might wanna put your pinky down – Leah

That’s crazy because I know I look cute – Treese

Don’t do it – Roland

Leah and Jarrett have history – Brenda
