Navy Commander James works with hopeful recruits as an officer enters with startling news. His father, Walter, died after a hit-and-run. James is unsure how to take it because Walter abandoned him and his mother for another woman. James comes home and greets his wife, Leila. He blurts out that his father passed, and she attempts to comfort him. He maintains his cold demeanor. Leila asks if James contacted his half-brother, Jonny. James says there is no need because the two weren’t close. As James walks away, Leila calls Jonny.
Jonny returns home and sees his girlfriend, Valentina, loading her belongings into her car. He begs her to stay, but she’s grown tired of his behavior. Also, he forgot her birthday. Jonny wallows in self-pity after she leaves. As he lies on the couch, he gets a call from Leila. She informs Jonny that Walter passed away. He puts Leila on speakerphone as he uses the bathroom. She overhears someone surprise Jonny. They put a knife to his throat and demand a package. Before Walter’s death, he was able to mail it to Jonny. Jonny admits he doesn’t know about it, and the men attack. Jonny eliminates the threats and escapes to Hawaii.
James lays his father to rest with his family, Governor Mahoe, and bikers in attendance. Walter was a private investigator with ties to everyone in the community. Leila looks around to see Jonny approaching. To James’s chagrin, she greets Jonny with a hug. The brothers nitpick at the funeral before going to James’s home for the wake. Jonny mentions the package Walter sent him. He believes the hit-and-run wasn’t an accident. James’s frustrations grow as Jonny’s accusations mount. Jonny leaves to investigate. However, something doesn’t sit right with James. He obtains footage from the scene and notices that the driver never slowed down. In fact, they sped up. Jonny and James must set aside their problems to discover who killed Walter. Will they kill each other first?
This film is unapologetically funny with outlandish action, but not for kids. The dialogue presents a lovingly combative brother-brother relationship, offering witty one-liners and great comebacks. The chemistry between the two leads is undeniable. The writers allowed the characters to grow without sappiness. They gave them commanding but unique personalities. The script displayed Hawaiian traditions with care and respect. The camera work wasn’t revolutionary, but it was a visual feast. As characters argue, you see an accident behind them. Someone casually swims in a pool as Jonny battles in a tracking fight scene. Viewers must keep their eyes and ears open so they catch everything. With a few plot holes, it’s a wild ride that could be a series with the proper writing. This movie isn’t going to change minds and hearts because it’s not supposed to. It allows you to turn off your mind and just have fun. If you like crude jokes, gory fights, and brotherly love, then you will enjoy this picture.
