Hotel Artemis – Review

Hotel Artemis – Budget Unknown – 1 hour and 34 minutes

Hotel Artemis
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

In 2028, Nurse has run Los Angelos’s Hotel Artemis for 22 years but it’s not a hotel.  The only open floor is the penthouse and its a hospital for criminals.  They must pay monthly dues, bring no guns, have no visitors, do no business, and never bring the police to the hotel.  And Nurse keeps everyone in line with an orderly properly named Everest.  Each room in the penthouse has a name and the patient is only referred to by this name.  The current patients are:

  • Nice: A hitwoman who only goes after important people and has an interesting implant
  • Honolulu: A bank robber with multiple guns shot wounds and a stolen pen
  • Waikiki: A bank robber who tried to get out of life but kept paying his dues
  • Acapulco: An arms dealer with a big mouth and something to prove

But two patients will cause every rule in Hotel Artemis to be broken, leaving a bloodbath.

If you are a fan of John Wick, this is right up your alley.  This movie gives you enough back story on each character to see how they are all interconnected as friends, lovers, and enemies.  It’s hard to understand how this Hotel has stood the test of time.  However, with the rules and security, everything stays in place.  Also, you will get the added bonus of learning the truth about Hotel Artemis’s start by Nurse making a deal with the devil.  Be warned there are some violent moments, so younger children should not attend.  This is going to be a cult classic and it is possible for a part 2.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

I may be a professional but she is the business – Waikiki

Don’t cross my line – Nice

I am not fat – Everest

Get your hands off the Guc – Acapulco

Those things will kill you – Nurse

Grifter Tami Ashcraft just drifted to Tahiti.  She has no job, direction, nor money.  Her plan is always the same.  Find a job, save money, and go to the next place.  While painting a boat, she sees Richard coming ashore.  Their connection is instant and strong.  After a few magical days together, Richard asks her to sail away with him.  She agrees.  But before they can get away, Richard is offered a job.  Sail a man’s yacht to San Diego and earn $10,000 and 2 first class tickets back to Tahiti.  Tami doesn’t want to head to San Diego because it’s home.  She is not ready to go home just yet.  However, out of fear of holding Richard back, she agrees to go.  The first few days are lovely but when a hurricane hits, the loving couple will be tested in faith, strength, and love.

Based on the novel Red Sky in Mourning by Tami Ashcraft and Susea McGearhart, this is the harrowing survival of 41 days adrift supported by true love (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  After Richard is injured, he guides Tami into sailing them to safety.  However, when they realize that California is too dangerous, the sail to Hawaii.  For them, it will be like hitting a moving target.  And if they miss, the closes land is Japan.  So with little water, little food, no power, no radio, and injuries, they have to fight to live.

Centuries ago, Thanos loved his land of Titan but he feared that the growing population would use up all the finite resources, causing devastation. His solution was to eliminate half the population to save everyone else. While some would call this genocide, Thanos called it mercy. Now, Thanos prophecy came true and Titan is rubble. So Thanos wants to save the galaxy from suffering the same fate Titan did. To do this, the must find the 6 infinity stones and insert them into his glove. And with a snap of his finger, he can show mercy to the galaxy and remove half the population. However, the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther & Wakanda, Spiderman, and Dr. Strange will do everything to stop him.

So there will be NO spoilers what so ever in this review. With that said, this movie is the ultimate culmination of the 18 films before it (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Each character, you have grown to love, keeps their personalities while delving into new areas and interactions they never have before.  You will see the perfect mash-up of personalities in new and old territories.  You will laugh, cry, be amazed, and shocked like never before.  The end will leave you … well … dumbfounded and oddly satisfied while wanting more.  See this movie before someone spoils it for you. And if you have seen it, keep the ending quiet. This should go without saying but stay past the end credits for a sneak peek into the future.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

Renee works for the small IT department for LeClaire Magazine.  She is tired of sitting in a small basement office in Chinatown.  She wants to work in the Manhatten office with all the other employees.  She considers applying for the receptionist job.  But she is hindered by her insecurities when she notices that everyone in the Manhattan looks like a model.  To get her spirits up, she decides to start working out again and falls, bumping her head twice.  When she wakes up, she is overcome with self-confidence.  Even though she looks the same to everyone else, her confidence shines through.  She starts going after the job, man, and life she wants.

Renee’s confidence is contagious.  It’s easy to see that attitude is everything.   However, this movie does warn the viewer of confidence becoming cockiness.  As Renee starts to succeed, she starts to hurt her friends and boyfriend.  And while we laugh at Renee’s renewed openness, you (and Renee) learn that every woman has self-esteem issues.  With the great concept of this movie, the jokes are uninspired and Michelle William’s voice is worse than nails on a chalkboard.  If you want to kill 2 hours with a few laughs and a self-esteem boost, see this movie at the matinee price.  Otherwise, wait for On Demand.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

I’d rather you not hear the splash – Mason

Right after your jailhouse pink eye clears up – Ethan

Good for her – Grant

They’re the same – Renee

Brea is an investigative journalist that just got scooped for her big story.  She is furious that her year-long investigation of real-estate corruption was turned into a fluff piece.  She gives her boss a piece of her mind and leaves.  Knowing she may not have a job, Brea still goes out to her birthday dinner with her boyfriend John, his friend Darren, and her friend (Darren’s girlfriend) Malia.  She tries to put on a brave face but she eventually cracks and tells them the truth.  After Darren spills the beans, John tells Brea that he is taking her away for a weekend so she can leave all her stress behind.  On their way up the mountain, John and Brea stop for gas.  John is harassed by bikers while Brea talks to Cara.  Brea can tell something is wrong with Cara but doesn’t have the nerve to ask.  Brea goes to meet John only to see he is in a fight with bikers.  Deputy Sally sees the fight and tells the bikers to back off.  John and Brea leave only to be chased by the bikers later.  They lose the bikers and head to the vacation home.  They have a lovely time until Darren comes unannounced with Malia.  John is furious and in the middle of an argument, John hears ringing from Brea’s purse.  Brea knows its not her phone and suspects it’s Cara.  After unlocking the phone, she finds evidence of a sex trafficking ring.  When Cara comes looking for her phone, the two couples will be in a life and death situation.

When making a movie about a $150 billion dollar business with millions of victim, you would expect a stronger storyline about sex trafficking.  Accept 60% of the movie is about John and Brea’s relationship, 10% about John and Darren’s relationship, and 10% about Darren and Malia’s relationship. That only leaves 20% of the movie for trafficking victims.  You are so far removed from the problem, it doesn’t feel real.  You would expect faces of real victims to run with the credits, but you get nothing but highway.  For such a serious topic with plenty of real-life stories, you would just expect more.  This is a movie for Lifetime, not the big screen.

I give it 1.5 out of 5 stars

Let them come – Brea

Replicants, bioengineered humans, have gotten better over the past 30 years. They have been integrated into the human culture and can live a normal lifespan because they obey without emotion. However, older models still exist that need to be “retired”. KD9-3.7 or “K” is the latest and best model created by the Wallace Corporation.  Also, K is a Blade Runner for the LAPD.  It is his job to hunt down the older models and retire them.  On a hunt, he scans the grounds and finds a buried box.  Once the box is dug up, bones of a female are found.  They are saddened to learn she died in childbirth.  However, they are shocked to learn that she was a Nexus 6 Replicant that died 30 years ago.  Lt. Joshi, K’s commander, tells him to destroy all the evidence of the birth, including the child.  If word gets out that replicants can have children, it could cause a war.  When K starts to investigate, he goes back to the home of his last hunt.  He finds a tree where the box was buried and sees a carving that reads 6 – 10 – 21.   The date shakes the core of his belief and sends him on a mission to find out the truth about the baby, the mother, and himself.

With characters from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick and the sequel to Blade Runner, this is a great continuation of the story (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It connects information about the past with things going on in 2049.  It does help to see the first movie before seeing the sequel.   And yes, this is a sequel and it contains a very compelling mystery of a lost child and a lost K, grabs your attention and can live up to the first movie.  The graphics are strong and encompasses the prequel with this sequel while bringing something new.  Blade Runner 2049 has walking adds like its predecessor but adds the visual eye candy of a “sync”.  This cannot be explained, only experienced.  It keeps dark imagery in most scenes while adding light with open floor plans and snow.  One problem was the movie’s running time.  It was too long.  Also, 3D nor Dolby was needed.  3D is just unnecessary.  However, the Dolby’s sound system often drowned out the actors and made it hard to hear.  So, see it in IMAX at full price, but see the 1st one first.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Thurgood Marshall goes back to the NAACP after finishing a trial.  He hopes to meet up with his wife Buster and be a husband.  But before he can put down his suitcases, he is given another case in Connecuit.  Joseph Spell was a driver for the Strubing Family.  One night, Eleanor was found soaking wet, on the side of the road.  She told the medical examiner and police officers that Joseph raped and attempted to kill her.  The NAACP worries the media coverage could sway the jury and cause many in the area to lose their job.  However, in order to be included in an active trial, Marshall will need to be introduced to the court.  The NAACP and his firm decided that Sam Friedman, a civil attorney, will be the one to introduce Marshall.  Sam is unhappy with the decision because he doesn’t want notoriety.  Trying this case could cost Sam is family, job, friends, and his life.   Judge Foster will allow Marshall to sit in on the trial with 1 stipulations: he can’t say a word, only write.   As the case becomes dangerous for both men, it’s their client who can lose the case for them.

This is a tough story that drives a strong point home while making you laugh.  The banter between Marshall and Friedman is refreshing and necessary.  While Marshall comes off as arrogant, it doesn’t distract from his ability to speak to and read the jury.  While Friedman comes off as fearful, he knows how to spot discrepancies from his time in civil court.  However, each man is dealing with personal issues, while trying this case.  With both men facing struggles and bigotry, it’s great to see them come together and make a compelling case for Spell.  This movie was a set and costume designer’s dream.  Seeing the old cars, home layouts, fashion, and technology,  keeps you in the time period.  This movie only downfall was that lack of closure for other characters (Mr. and Mrs. Strubing, Friedman’s wife, and Friedman’s partner).  It would have been interesting to see how this case affects the ones who cared for them, not just the 2 men.  This is a must-see for the theaters. Also, if you stay during end credits you will hear Thurgood speak for himself.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Princess Twilight Sparkle is quietly freaking out about throwing the Friendship Festival.  She is looking forward to having the biggest singer Songbird Serenade performing for Equestria.  To make the performance extra special she wants to ask Princess Luna, Princess Celestia, and Princess Cadance for “small” favors.  After they politely turn her down, the preparations are ended by a large dark ship descending upon them.  They learn that the ship is running at the command of the Storm King and his actions are carried out by Tempest Shadow, a unicorn with a broken horn. Tempest lets them know she is going to take all the Princesses and steal their powers for the Storm King.  Twilight Sparkle hears Celestia tell Luna to find the “Queen of the Hippos” before they are both frozen.  Then after, Princess Cadance is frozen, Twilight Sparkle and her friends escape.  They are on a mission to find the Queen of the Hippos, save the 3 Princesses, and stop the Storm King.  This adventure will test Princess Twilight Sparkle’s power of friendship.

This is surprisingly watchable.  While it’s not spectacular, it has a good amount of laughs and some notable songs.  This movie is like the chipper person you know in your office.  At first, they were annoying, but they grew on you slowly.  This movie will grow on you.  It has plenty of jokes for kids, with a few dashed in for parents.  This is a children’s movie however the final scene, music, and graphics will draw you in.   The voices are that of Alvin and the Chipmunks but each pony has its own personality and drive.  So if you have a child, see it at the matinee price.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

In 1980, Meredith Quill was in love with a spaceman. He showed her a special flower he was growing behind a Dairy Queen. Their love created Star-Lord. He, along with Gamora, Rocket, Drax, and Groot, make up the Guardians of the Galaxy. They have been hired by Ayesha (leader of the Sovereign race) to protect precious batteries from a large monster. After a hard-fought battle, they are praised and paid. Their payment was Gamora’s sister Nebula. They intend on return Nebula to Xandar for a bounty. However, on their way back, they are attacked by the Sovereign Empire because Rocket stole some of their batteries. With help, the Guardians defeat the army but crash their ship on Berhertz. They plan to fix the ship and collect their bounty when the ship that helped them defeat the Sovereign Empire lands. The spaceship opens to reveal Ego and Mantis. Ego has been searching for the mortal that held an infinity stone and lived. After a compelling argument, Drax, Gamora, and Star-Lord leave with Ego and Mantis. Leaving Groot, Rocket to fix the ship and watch Nebula.

On another planet, Yondu is losing control and respect. His men think he is going soft, while other Ravagers are disgusted by his actions of child-trafficking. After being disrespected by everyone, Yondu is really hurt. Then Ayesha hires Yondu to do a job: Find the Guardians and return them to her. Yondu finds the ship and subdues Rocket. But when Yondu doesn’t want to hand them over to Ayesha, he overpowered by his men and locked away with Rocket. Yondu is determined to free himself (along with Rocket and Groot) and warn Star-Lord.

As Ego and Star-Lord spend time together, Star-Lord learns more about his family, his true origin, and his powers. However, he is being hunted by Ayesha and Nebula. But Rocket, Groot, and Yondu will do anything to save Star-Lord. When Gamora hears Mantis, an empath, about to share secrets with Drax, she wonders what secrets Ego must have. She instantly does not trust Ego and warns Star-Lord of the potential troubles ahead. All entities will come together for one final battle.

Wow. The complex storyline, amazing imagery, and stellar soundtrack justified waiting 3 years for the 2nd volume. Guardians of the Galaxy is not afraid to poke fun at itself (i.e. how romances are held off because it will hurt the ratings). It doesn’t add characters for the sake of having them, they are added because they are critical to the story. The opening battle is strong, catchy, and hilarious. You will oh, ah, get misty eyed, and have your heart break in a matter of 2 hours. While Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 1 was an origin story for the group coming together, this is an origin story for Star-Lord, a deeper look into Nebula’s and Gamora’s relationship, and an explanation for Yondu’s protective nature over Star-Lord. See this movie in 3D and pay whatever the theater wants. As they walk around Ego’s planet, 3D makes all the colors pop and the battles feel alive. During the credits, you will see Groot’s growth, Stan Lee, and play “I Am Groot” game. Stay past the end credits for a look into Vol. 3. This sequel is not a superhero movie, but a movie about the family you make instead of the family you were given.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars
