Hiccup works as a blacksmith’s apprentice in Gobber’s shop, but Hiccup dreams of doing what all Vikings do: kill dragons. Hiccup’s father, Stoick, is the Chief of Berk. A proud Viking Village that battles the fire-breathing creatures. Hiccup distributes weapons as he stares at Astrid. She is a fire extinguisher and a shoo-in for the top dragon slayer in training camp. Hiccup begs to join during the battle, but Stoick and Gobber say no. Hiccup grabs his double-barreled, bolas-throwing weapon and sneaks off to the edge of the village. He thinks he sees the most feared dragon, the Night Fury, in the sky. The Vikings understand very little about the Night Fury, but Hiccup knows that killing one will gain Stoick’s respect. Hiccup sees a flash in the night sky and fires his weapon. He sees the creature fall in the distance and cheers. However, another dragon spots Hiccup and attacks. Stoick saves him but forces Hiccup to go home.

Hiccup searches the woods and follows broken trees to a valley. He finds the Night Fury trapped in his bolas. Hiccup raises his knife to the creature, but won’t take its life. He cuts the dragon free. It screams in Hiccup’s face and runs away. Hiccup returns home and prepares to tell Stoick that he doesn’t want to kill dragons. However, Gobber’s wise words helped Stoick change his mind. He will allow Hiccup to train with Gobber to become a dragon slayer. Hiccup begrudgingly agrees.

Hiccup trains with Astrid, Snotlout, Fishlegs, and twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut. Astrid is the standout, while Hiccup is the outsider. Everything changes as Hiccup uses his private time with the Night Fury, named Toothless, to learn helpful hints about the dragons. Hiccup becomes the class leader. He discovers that dragons fear humans as much as humans fear them. However, Hiccup uncovers that Toothless and the other dragons are following the orders of something gargantuan. If humans and dragons don’t work together, it will destroy them all.

This film is spectacular. If you put aside the controversy, this film is visually stunning. The CGI team and director worked diligently to create a smooth transition between live-action and computer-generated scenes. And the moments with Toothless and Hiccup flying give the audience a dragon’s view of Berk. The astounding view could cause motion sickness for some audience members, especially if seen in 3D. The script explains the new members of the tribe and their strengths. This film expands the training elements and adds a few jokes, but the overall story is similar to the original movie (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). This beloved film captures the spirit of the books while attracting new fans. The downside of this picture is the sound editing. The actor’s best lines become garbled during the massive battle scenes. The movie contains a 2-second post-credit scene. Viewers should skip it unless they like disappointment. This live-action reboot does the source material justice.

Former Treasury Director Raymond King meets Anaïs in a pub. Ray shows her a picture of a family and points to the boy. Anaïs says she doesn’t kill kids. Before she walks away, Ray tells her that a man, Emiliano, hired him to find his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson, Alberto. They went missing years ago, and he hasn’t been able to contact them since. Ray is semi-retired and only takes on worthy causes as a private investigator. He warns her to be careful, but she tells Ray that people are following him. Ray looks around the room and sees several men moving in the shadows. He runs to the bathroom, but the window won’t budge. He hides in the stall while writing a message on his arm. He manages to escape the pub, but a sniper shoots him in the street.

Newly appointed Treasury Director Marybeth enters her office at FinCEN and answers the phone. It’s the medical examiner’s office. She was Ray’s emergency contact. A detective on Ray’s case asks Marybeth if Ray has financial issues. Marybeth doesn’t recall and wonders what caused the detective to question Ray’s spending habits. The detective pulls down the sheet covering Ray’s body and exposes his arm. He has ‘Find the Accountant’ scrolled on it.

Marybeth travels to Ray’s rented home and finds marks on a blank wall. The owners removed the gruesome photos he displayed. She pays the rent and makes a murder board. She can’t decipher the information and finds a business card for Harbor Neuroscience Academy. She calls the number and assumes the British voice, Justine, is eavesdropping. Marybeth informs the receiver that Ray is dead and that she needs the accountant, Christian Wolff.

Christian arrives at Marybeth’s location and watches her review the evidence. She notices he’s not contributing, but he needs room to work. So, Marybeth goes to sleep. She wakes and discovers Christian rearranged the evidence. He uncovered that each murder follows the family in the photo. If they want to discover who killed the victims, they must find the family. However, they will need more boots on the ground because Marybeth refuses to do anything illegal. So, Christian calls his brother Braxton.

Braxton is finishing a job overseas when his phone rings. Christian wants to know if Braxton can be in Los Angeles in 24 hours. Braxton laughs because he hasn’t heard from Christian in years. Now, he calls for a favor. Braxton decides to go after playfully chastising Christian. They will use their talents to uncover a dark world ruled by greed and find a missing family.

This sequel was worth the wait (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). It expands the world while allowing Christian Wolff to grow. He and Braxton have a loving bond, but Braxton wants a deeper connection to his big brother. He worries that Christian doesn’t miss or need him. Their jokes, teases, and heartfelt conversations remove the lull from the non-action portions of the script. The hand-to-hand combat is perfectly choreographed, framed, and edited. Viewers will cringe at breaking bones while laughing at witty remarks. The shootouts are more elaborate and farfetched, but the film is so good you won’t care. Also, the audience gets to see what happens at the Academy. It’s fun, brilliant, and shocking. This series will be the next John Wick if writing and action rise steadily.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

I’m not like you. I just can’t break the law when it suits me – Marybeth

I guess I hit him harder than I thought – Braxton

I optimized my profile – Christian

Hello, dreamboat – Justine
