A realtor walks Al and Rose Young around a house and shows them the large dining room, living room, and kitchen. It was constructed 100 years ago but well made. Rose especially likes the impressive colonial home across the street. The realtor states the price is $3400, and Al gags. He only expected to pay $3000. However, the realtor states Al’s G.I. bill will help them. Before Al ponders further, Rose says she’s pregnant. Al chooses to buy the home.
Rose gives birth to Richard and has two more children, Jimmy and Elizabeth, later. Richard loves to draw and dreams of becoming a graphic designer. Al tells Richard to get a reliable job with an office. Years later, Richard brings his girlfriend, Margaret, home to meet his parents. She wants to be a lawyer, but Al says, ‘What’s wrong with being a mother,’ before leaving the room. Rose pats Margaret’s hand, stands up, and tells her to focus on her dreams because time won’t wait. Richard asks Margaret to spend the night here. She wants to spend the rest of her life here. ‘Here’ has been many things to many people.
Based on Here by Richard McGuire, this movie’s plot centers on the Young family (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). However, the timeline stretches from prehistoric days until now. The scenes overlay like photos in a scrapbook during pivotal moments to make the connection. The camera doesn’t change angles until the last 10 seconds. It is in the same place when dinosaurs run by, an Indigenous couple presents their baby to the world, William Franklin spends time with his family, construction workers build the home, and the Youngs move in. This spot has a place in history and with each family. It goes through birth, life, and death. This director and editor stayed faithful to the source material and made the movie identical to the graphic novel. This picture isn’t for you if you don’t like a nonlinear story. It doesn’t depend on wild graphics or fights to drive the plot. It tells the story of a single place throughout history. This movie will be in film classes for years to come.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars
I have no regrets – Richard
Time just went – Rose
I love it here – Margaret
What did you say – Al
