Inez paroles out of Rikers Island Correctional Facility in 1994 after spending one and a half years in prison for boosting. She returns to Brooklyn, enters a women’s shelter, and does hair to make ends meet. She tried to return to her old job, but her boss said no. Inez sees a young boy, Terry, across the street and recognizes him. Inez asks the boy if his foster mother treats him right. Then she begs Terry to look her in her eyes. She promises Terry that she will never leave him again.

Inez sees Terry’s friends while passing out flyers, but she doesn’t see Terry. She questions his friends. And they tell her that Terry is in the hospital. He fell out of a window and hit his head. Inez runs to the hospital to check on him and gives him a gift. As they bond, she explains she is his mother. She lost him but will do everything to get him back. Every day, Inez sneaks into Terry’s room to check on him. When he asks if she is returning, Inez asks Terry if he wants to say with her for a few days. She takes the boy and gets in a cab to Harlem. Terry wonders about his father, Lucky, but Inez hasn’t told Terry that Lucky is still in prison. Inez is homeless with no job and a son to support alone. She wants to give Terry a better life than she did in foster care. But she must care for him without the city realizing Inez kidnapped Terry. Can Inez secretly provide her son with a life she never had?

Inez is a hurt woman with a chip on her shoulder. She is constantly in survival mode with no hope of thriving. Inez will lash out for the slightest indiscretion, even when wrong. Each time Inez reacts, viewers get a glimpse into her tumultuous history. Viewers should pay attention to the news clips playing in the background. It helps catapult you into the 90s and early 2000s. New York was in a transition. And the people with the least were hit the hardest. You will sit on the edge of your seat, wondering when this house of cards will come crashing down. And the audience will get the biggest shock when it does. It’s up to you to determine if Inez is a mother who lost or a crook that won.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars
