Lisa Swallows reconsiders going out, but her step-sister, Taffy, reminds Lisa of her doctor’s order: Lisa must socialize. Taffy allows Lisa to use her tanning bed, but it shocks Lisa. Taffy asks if Lisa has a crush on anyone, and Lisa admits to liking Mike, editor of the school’s literary magazine. Taffy doesn’t know Mike, so the popular cheerleader warns Lisa to stay away. Taffy understands that Lisa must date a socially-appropriate guy to gain popularity in her new school. Then, Lisa mentions hanging out at Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery. Taffy informs Lisa that it’s haunted. But Lisa believes it’s peaceful. Lisa has a favorite gravesite. She leaves gifts and talks to the person beneath her feet.

Lisa attends the party and tries to show off for Mike by drinking alcohol, except it’s spiked. She stumbles through the party, and Doug finds her. Doug takes Lisa to the bedroom and harasses her. Lisa escapes and walks to the cemetery. She stands at her favorite grave and wishes to be with him. Lisa returns home, screams, and breaks the bathroom mirror.

Taffy wakes Lisa up to alert her. Lisa’s stepmother, Janet, wants Lisa to admit to breaking the mirror. She thinks Lisa is unstable and should be institutionalized. Lisa confesses. Her father makes Lisa apologize and pay for the mirror. Lisa offers to take an extra shift to pay for it. Then, Janet becomes preoccupied with the previous night’s tornado warning. During the storm, lightning struck the old cemetery.

Later, the family decides to see Look Who’s Talking, but Lisa watches an old movie at home (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Lisa hears a pounding at the back door and sees a gross creature. She runs in fear, climbs on the roof, and hangs from the gutters. It stands below Lisa as she falls. Lisa runs into the house and attempts to call 911, but the creature is on the phone. She realizes he is not there to hurt her. He is the body under her favorite tombstone. He points to his body because parts are missing, but Lisa doesn’t know how to help. He explains the lightning helped bring him to life.

Lisa helps clean him and keep him away from her family. After Janet finds a bug in her food, she storms into Lisa’s room and blames her. She tells Lisa that Lisa’s time is up, and she arranges to have Lisa taken away. The creature comes out of Lisa’s closet and hits Janet on the back of the head with a sewing machine, killing her. The creature takes a pair of scissors and cuts off Janet’s ear. He gives it to Lisa to attach, but she tells him they must get rid of the body first. Lisa affixes the ear to the creature and gets a stunning idea. She puts the creature in the tanning bed to permanently attach the new body part. The creature gains a new limb with every complication in Lisa’s life. But as the body count increases, Lisa and her creature’s connection grows with their potential exposure.

This movie is an instant cult classic. Set in 1989, viewers get crimpers, jellies, and blue eye shadow. This love story has blood, death, and cringe-worthy moments for horror fans. This horror film has heartbreak, passion, and redemption for romance lovers. And it packs fun yet cerebral laughs. Viewers can add this to their Valentine’s and Halloween collections. And it will fit perfectly. Once Lisa stops screaming, she accepts the creature as her friend. She dresses him up, confides in him, and protects him. In turn, he feels indebted to her. He wants to protect the girl who cared for him at any cost. Lisa has had issues connecting with the living since her mother’s murder. Although the creature can’t talk, Lisa feels understood for the first time. As this twisted story progresses, you will wonder if it’s a hallucination, dream, or fantasy. The plot will answer everything at the end. This mix of Frankenstein, Edward Scissorhands, and Romeo & Juliet is a horror-love story for the ages. If you want a love story with gore and humor, you will love this.
