Deck the Hallways – Review

Deck the Hallways – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Zoe returns home after ending her relationship. She looks forward to celebrating the holidays with her grandmother, Agnes, and her vibrant community. Every Christmas, Agnes and her neighbors decorated the building’s hallways and partied as a community. However, the bare stoop throws Zoe for a loop. And the naked hallways make her do a double-take. She enters Agnes’s apartment, and it isn’t decorated. Agnes changed all the furniture and is headed out the door. Agnes embraced the party girl lifestyle and wants to live free.

Zoe meets with the neighbors, and they all state that the building’s supervisor, Wade, changed the rules after a fire. Now, they can’t decorate the halls. Zoe sees her old friend, Jace, in the hallway. He confirms that the neighborhood has changed. However, he thinks her grandfather’s passing was the catalyst. Several neighbors want to move after experiencing changes in their lives. This prompts Zoe to bring the building to its glory days. Jace is there to assist her in whatever she needs. First, they have to get past Wade. Second, they must get the building on board. Their biggest adversary, to their surprise, is Agnes. Can they deck the hallways again?

Agnes is the character of the year. She would make the cover of Grandma’s Gone Wild. She is non-stop fun. However, the script expresses to the audience that it’s a coping mechanism. She is stuck in the grieving process and refuses to acknowledge it. Zoe isn’t different. She’s mourning her grandfather, her relationship, and the past. Zoe and Agnes are two sides of the same coin. One aspect of this film that will drive the viewer crazy is the neighborhood trauma dumping. Everyone comes to Agnes with their problems, but they don’t see her pain. She carries the building on her shoulders, and she uses her outings to escape. This picture shows the importance of community during the holidays. However, we must remember that the community shouldn’t be one-sided. This film is charming, heart-warming, funny, and healing.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Go party like it’s 1959 – Agnes

Why do you have stripper shoes – Zoe

A Christmas Cookbook – Review

A Christmas Cookbook – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Veronica frowns at her earrings. She thought her boyfriend of 7 years, Theo, was ready to propose. Instead, he breaks up because they are too comfortable. Veronica calls her mother and pitches the idea of returning home for the holidays. However, they are going on a trip. She will be alone for the first time on Christmas. Her mother encourages Veronica to start her dream cookbook, but Veronica doesn’t believe she will have enough time. Veronica avoids her feelings by taking on more projects at work, but feels overwhelmed with the increased responsibility.

Veronica goes to Dana’s Cafe to get a drink and proofread a manuscript. She orders a specific drink, and Dana sets it on the counter. Cullen grabs it as Veronica protests. He states that he orders the same drink every day, and it’s impossible that her palate would be as complex as his. She laughs when Dana sets his drink next to hers. As they argue, Dana hides a message under Veronica’s coffee sleeve. Veronica returns to work and reads the messages. It’s a date, time, and location for the X-Mas Club.

Veronica arrives at the club and greets Dana. Dana explains that Cullen started the club after his fiancée left him at the altar. Dana joined the club after her son left home, and Cullen’s college roommate, Raj, became a member because he’s a foodie. Cullen’s cousin, Josie, joined to get over her divorce, and Javier was the photographer at Cullen’s doomed wedding. He became a member to wind down after work. They are single every year. They act as dates for social holiday events to avoid awkward moments. Everyone welcomes Veronica with a smile, except Cullen. He wants her to prove herself worthy of the club by baking a treat. Veronica accepts the challenge.

Veronica, Dana, Raj, Cullen, Javier, and Josie meet with their signature dishes. Everyone loves Veronica’s crumbles, but Cullen is the final judge. He can’t deny that her dessert is delicious. They welcome Veronica into the X-mas club and inform her of their upcoming charity and social events. Veronica is happy she will be sharing the holidays with foodie friends, but she will gain so much more.

Based on The X-Mas Club by Lenora Worth, this film is a foodies dream (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The desserts mix Christmas classics with cultural gems. It will inspire you to try something new. The club is fun, energetic, and comforting. When the group is together, the dialogue is witty and dynamic. However, Veronica and Cullen’s conversations fall into the romcom trap. Their emotional dance changes when Cullen’s ex-fiancée enters the relationship. Lifetimers know she’s not a threat. The film’s premise is fun, but the chemistry between the leads doesn’t sell it.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

But I don’t want to be uncomfortable – Veronica

Look at it as a reset – Theo

I didn’t see that coming – Cullen

Jingle All The Way to Love – Review

Jingle All The Way to Love – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

On New Year’s Eve, Andi reaches for a cupcake and brushes hands with a handsome man. She confesses she has a law school interview tomorrow and worries. The man gives her a magical sleigh bell for luck, but he gives her the rules. First, she can’t keep it. Once it does its magic, she must pass it on. Second, she can’t pass it back and forth to someone else. It must continue. Andi agrees and takes the bell. A woman spills a drink on Andi. She runs to the bathroom, cleans herself, and exits to find the man, but he’s gone at the strike of midnight.

Years later, Andi is a successful lawyer but wants to do pro bono work. Her boss says he doesn’t have the time. She’s engaged to Doctor Ned, but hasn’t started wedding planning. Andi listens to her favorite radio show during her morning commute. DJ Jake asks callers to dial in and discuss their brush with Christmas fate. The best story will win $5,000. Andi calls in and wins with her sleigh bell story. Jake cuts Andi off before ending the show.

After the show, Jake’s producer, Piper, says listeners love Andi. A major broadcaster wants to buy their station. Jake’s show may get dropped if they don’t raise the ratings. Piper firmly suggests adding Andi as a co-host. Jake prefers to go solo. However, a few callers have a story about their encounter with the bell. Piper wants to find the man who gave it to Andi and make it a show. Jake grits his teeth and meets with Andi. She agrees to do the show, but she must leave at a reasonable time to return to her 9-to-5. Jake agrees. After Jake adds Andi and the search for the bell to his show, it helps them heal emotional wounds and find each other.

This film starts with a New Year’s twist before returning to Christmas. This bell feels magical, but it’s in the eye of the beholder. It has an effect on its users because it gives them confidence. So, fans waiting for wind chimes and Santa will be disappointed. However, this film is about people having the courage to take the next step in their lives. Andi doesn’t know how to demand what she wants from her job or relationship. And Jake is unsure about introducing his listeners to his past or his daughter. It’s those fears that draw the audience to the story, not the romance. This movie builds courage.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

I’m a lone wolf – Jake

Are you still curious about this guy? – Ned

I’m in, but I have some stipulations – Andi

Franny, I need a favor – Livy

Do You Fear What I Fear? – Review

Do You Fear What I Fear? – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Claire kisses her boyfriend, Jesse, as he hangs decorations around their small town, Pines Hollow. She answers a call from her friend, Sloane, in the big city. Sloane got Claire her dream job at SteadPoint Marketing. Claire informs Jesse and her mother, Betty. She is excited to jump-start her career in the big city.

Claire arrives at work, and Sloane introduces her to her boss, Elizabeth. Elizabeth is a strong boss who demands results with zero excuses. Sloane discovers that Claire is staying in a hotel and makes arrangements for Claire to stay in a fully furnished apartment. Claire arrives at the building and greets the concierge, George. The building manager, Larry, shows her around the complex and her apartment. Her neighbor, Miles, offers to help with technical issues, while her other neighbor, Steve, is available to provide assistance with anything else. Claire settles into her new home when she hears strange sounds next door. Perplexed, Larry says it is an empty apartment, and the old building creaks. Claire accepts this until someone decorates her apartment while she’s at work. Someone is stalking Claire. But who and why?

The writer of this film is a genius. It starts like any Hallmark or Lifetime Christmas movie. A beautiful woman in a picturesque town with the perfect boyfriend gets a call to the big city. And that’s where it ends. Now, she wants to escape the small town life with its music, decor, and forced merriment. If you didn’t know it, the audience would assume it was a regular holiday film. The culprit is unhinged but slightly predictable. However, the script throws plenty of red herrings your way. This movie offers something different but keeps you in the holiday spirit.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

This is a fresh start – Claire

I’m way too boring to be hiding anything – Miles

Most people wait at least a week before hitting panic mode – Elizabeth

Check in? You could wait to leave – Betty

Most good stories start with an ex – Steve

Christmas at the Catnip Café – Review

Christmas at the Catnip Café – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Victoria shows Olivia her dream condo, but Olivia will need a bigger down payment to secure it. Olivia runs a successful marketing company, but she doesn’t know how to obtain that amount of cash before someone else buys the property. Then, Olivia gets a call from her great-aunt’s estate lawyer, Henry.

Aunt Ester left Olivia her home and 50% of a café. The house has a hefty mortgage, but a developer is interested in the café. She wants to sell her half and use the proceeds for her dream condo. Olivia flies across the country to see the café. Before she arrives, she sees Dr. Ben in his pet clinic window. She stares until someone bumps her with a Christmas tree. Dr. Ben sees her, too. She arrives at the café, and the number of cats shocks her. It’s an establishment that promotes cat adoption.

Ben arrives at the Catnip Café and introduces himself as the other owner. Some of his patients reside in the café. Olivia offers to sell Ben her half, but Ben can’t afford to buy her out. She reminds him that he can’t stop her from selling it either. Realizing she’s right, Ben concedes. Later, Ben arrives at Ester’s home to retrieve Ester’s Christmas book. She jotted all the activities she hosted at the café during the holidays. He’s surprised to see Olivia there, and she’s shocked to see he has a key. She grabs the binder and hands it to him. He deduces that he can’t handle the activities alone. He offers to approve the sale. But only if she hosts all the Christmas café activities. He assumes her heart will change over the course of the 3-week event, but Olivia is steadfast that she won’t give up her dream condo. Who will win?

This film is for cat-lovers. It has a variety of different kitties and a grumpy cat. This plot offers flashbacks that show how the Catnip Café came to be. Ester’s time with Olivia inspired the unique establishment. And it had a ripple effect on the community. While the movie’s concept is fun, the plot is slow and centers around the cat-themed activities. It becomes the standard holiday plot with fuzzy co-stars. The leads bring chemistry to the storyline, but other viewers won’t gravitate towards it. This picture is for the feline lover in your home.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

I bet you’re not as grumpy as you look – Olivia

I think that might be me – Ben

Christmas in Amish Country – Review

Christmas in Amish Country – UPtv – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Claire’s molecular gastronomic restaurant opened with horrible reviews. Her manager, Alex, advises Claire to leave town until the heat dies down. Also, reporters will be at her door. The grand opening invitation had her return address on it. Claire orders a rideshare and receives a massive number of texts from reporters. She shuts off her phone to avoid the notifications.

Jack waits outside Claire’s home. He promised his boss that he would get an exclusive interview with Claire. The radio reports that the airline closed all the flights due to the snowstorm. Then, Claire jumps in his car and tells him to take her to the airport. She assumes he is her rideshare driver. He realizes her mistake and updates her about the cancellations, but he doesn’t admit his real name or job. Jack offers to drive her wherever she wants to go. It’s out of the way, but Claire wants to go to Amish Country, her home. Jack’s story just landed in his lap.

Claire arrives at the market and sees her sister and mother there. They give a brief hello before leaving to cook. Jack sees a man backing out of the parking lot, oblivious that Claire’s mother, Miriam, is behind his truck. He almost hits her before Jack pulls her out of the way. As a sign of gratitude, they invite him to dinner. Jack reveals his name and profession. Claire pulls him aside and demands he leave, but Miriam won’t let him. She agrees to give him an exclusive, but he can’t write about her family and past lifestyle. He concedes to her demands. Jack helps Claire see that her past shouldn’t be hidden. It should inspire her.

This film has a different perspective on Amish culture and lifestyle. Instead of brutal dictatorships and abuse, viewers see loving and progressive families. The writers make an effort to dispel some of the myths. While Claire turned her back on her family’s lifestyle, they haven’t cut her off. In fact, they don’t know about her failed endeavour. Like most UPtv plots, it’s sparingly humorous with long lulls in between. Claire’s family is the reason to watch, along with inspired recipes. Otherwise, you can put this film on your Christmas back burner.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

You’ll get your clicks – Jack

The Christmas Cup – Review

The Christmas Cup – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Sergeant Kelly Brandt returns home after injuring her knee. She’s spent time in rehab and filed her reinstatement papers. Kelly prays they will allow her to rejoin the Marines. Until then, she will spend time with her family in Longleaf. Her brother, Mickey, and Mickey’s daughter, Kip, pick Kelly up from the bus station and greet her with hugs. They bring her home to an awaiting surprise party. Kelly meets the new fire chief, Quinn. Her father, Mayor James, explains that Quinn protects Longleaf and its neighboring town, Bridgeport. Then, Bridgeport’s mayor, Sheila, states that the party has too many guests and commands Quinn to shut it down. Quinn apologizes to Kelly before following orders.

James and Mickey are sick of Sheila’s antics. They want to win the Christmas Cup to declare their town’s dominance. Over the last 49 years, Longleaf and Bridgeport competed to see which town was the best. Bridgeport has won for the past 7 years. In the same years, Kelly’s mother didn’t lead the team after her passing. This will be James’s last year as mayor and the 50th anniversary of the cup. Mickey wants to win it for their family and the town. However, he only believes they can win if Kelly leads the team. At first, Kelly says no, but Quinn convinces her to use her military background to bring the team to victory. As they work together, Kelly falls for him and her hometown. What will she do when the Marines call her back?

This film is fun with a lively game and compelling competitors. The writers created a backstory, skill, and leg of the competition for each team member. While they don’t have much screen time, they make a lasting impact. Each offers Kelly a unique way to help them advance in the competition. Kelly has an interesting dynamic. She loves to serve her country and can’t think of anything that makes her happier. But the call of home and a ticking clock put her life in perspective. And the final competition and training montage is a laugh riot. The final act is pure class. This film has everything for everyone. If you come for the love story, know that it takes a back seat for most of the film.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

I see some things never change – Kelly

Don’t let it bug you – James

I am sorry – Quinn

You were born to do this – Bree

You know, I expected more from a Brandt woman – Sheila

The Christmas Campaign – Review

The Christmas Campaign – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Monique enters Kayleigh’s office with a new project. A legacy client, Santa’s Pajamas, requests a new campaign for their upcoming collection. Kayleigh has several projects, but gladly takes this on because it should be an easy marketing push. Kayleigh will work with her team until Christmas to make the perfect campaign. Kayleigh gives her mother, Helen, the good news, but Helen doesn’t care. She wishes Kayleigh had become a lawyer like her.

Darren prepares to meet with his new client when his grandmother, Evelyn, asks for help sending an email. She wishes Darren wouldn’t work so hard and find love. He reminds Evelyn that he is a freelance consultant. He must work to gain and keep his clientele. He travels to Monique’s firm to help with the social media component of her marketing team. Monique hires him as a social media aggregator for the Santa’s Pajamas campaign. She introduces Darren to Kayleigh, and Kayleigh isn’t impressed. She believes she can handle it with her current strategy. Monique sternly demands that Kayleigh work with Darren. If the campaign is a success, she will give Kayleigh a coveted promotion. Kayleigh relents, but lets Darren know that she is in charge. He laughs and agrees. This pair will battle to bring out the best in each other.

This film is a comfort watch during the holiday season. It has a calm, handsome man who gives Kayleigh the time and space she needs to grow. However, he understands the pressure she’s under to prove her worth to her family. Darren stands up for her in a way that will make you proud. He validates her feelings and congratulates her on her wins. Kayleigh learns to trust and let go. The writers took the time for both characters to evolve within the relationship. The holiday takes a backseat to a stronger love story. While the outcome is predictable, the romance is compelling.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

You didn’t even know anything was wrong – Jack

Don’t make me beg during the holidays. It’s unbecoming – Darren

It’s no big deal – Kayleigh

A Christmas Wish in Hudson – Review

A Christmas Wish in Hudson – UPtv – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Lori becomes burnt out with her boss’s disrespect and quits her job. She returns home and relaxes with her sister, Amy, while watching her favorite TV show, Best Unknown Baker. This episode features Patrick, a widowed firefighter from Hudson, Wisconsin. His daughter, Nicole, wrote into the show about her father’s cooking skills, and she wants him to find a wife this holiday. Lori likes what she sees and tells Amy. Later, Amy surprises her sister with a ticket to Hudson so she can hopefully meet Patrick.

Patrick arrives at work with a score of adoring fans. He went on a date with one, but she lied about everything. He thinks his moment of fame was a bust. Patrick dresses as Santa to hide from the crowd. Simultaneously, Lori walks to the firehouse, but the fans scare her away. She decides to spend her time in Hudson as a vacation and not a love match. She sits in the park and runs into a Santa. They hit it off and plan to go on a date later. She realizes it’s Patrick and wants to tell him the truth. But she overhears that he thinks the women outside the firehouse are crazy. As Lori falls deeper in love with him, she wants to tell the truth. But will she lose the man of her dreams?

This film is slow and boring. The characters have no chemistry, and the plot is predictable. It’s something you watch when you prefer an uncomplicated film and no character development. If you consider Hallmark too controversial, this is the film for you. Otherwise, skip this film this holiday season if you value your time.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

I don’t know, but I bet you will figure it out – Lori

Fake Yourself a Merry Little Christmas – Review

Fake Yourself a Merry Little Christmas – OWN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Maya discusses her holiday plans with her best friend, Roxy. Maya’s mother will be spending the holidays with her new boyfriend and his family. So, Maya will spend this Christmas alone. Maya tells Roxy not to worry because she has a Pinterest board of holiday recipes to try (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Roxy sighs and goes home to pack for her holiday trip.

Maya runs to the grocery store and knocks over a display. A handsome man, Keenan, helps her, and they lock eyes. Maya exits the store as Keenan runs after her. He slips on the ice and hits his head. Maya runs to his aid and calls 9-1-1. Roxy meets Maya at the hospital. As Maya and Roxy await the news, Roxy spots Maya’s ex-boyfriend, Dr. Daniel. He’s caring for Keenan. Before Maya can speak, Roxy says Keenan is Maya’s boyfriend. Maya doesn’t correct her after Daniel brings Maya into Keenan’s room. Before Maya leaves, Keenan’s family rushes inside. Daniel introduces Maya as Keenan’s girlfriend, and they stare in stunned silence. Keenan’s parents, Charles and Eleanor, remember that Keenan wanted to bring someone special for Christmas. They assume Maya was that someone. They invite her to their home, and Daniel waves goodbye. He promises to keep in touch with any updates. As Maya keeps up the charade, she falls for Keenan’s family and Dr. Daniel. She knows the truth will come out. What will she do?

This film is equally funny and heartwarming as Maya navigates her way around Roxy’s lie. The writers made Keenan’s sister, Nadine, believably skeptical of Maya’s motives. She tiptoes around Maya, asking questions and gathering facts. Nadine refuses to believe Maya at face value because she cares for Keenan. The most memorable moment is Maya communicating with her mother, Paula. Maya doesn’t see she’s following Paula’s life path until she faces it. Only then does Maya take a long, hard look at herself and take accountability for her actions. And Grandma is a woman after your heart with no chill. While the film’s premise is far-fetched, it’s comical and loving.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

I am going to have a peaceful, uneventful Christmas for one – Maya

A Grand Ole Opry Christmas – Review

A Grand Ole Opry Christmas – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Mac goes to Gentry’s home because her father’s singing group, Winters and Wade, will be honored at the Grand Ole Opry. Gentry will go, but she won’t stand on stage. She doesn’t feel she has earned the right to be there because her songwriting career never flourished. Mac says it doesn’t matter because she’s a part of the history. Gentry smiles and promises to think about it. Gentry goes to work at her restaurant. Her friend, Rita, agrees with Mac. She thinks Gentry should be on stage. So, Gentry relents out of respect for Rita.

Gentry arrives at the Opry and speaks with her father’s singing partner, Von Winters. Von wishes Gentry would join him on stage, but she’s still unsure. Later, Gentry sits on the stage, and a light shines in her eyes. In a flash, she sees her father, Jett, and Von discussing their song on stage. A younger Rita approaches her and demands that Gentry leave. The spotlight flashes in her eyes again, and she’s back to the present day.

Gentry tells Mac about her magical teleportation, but he doesn’t believe her. She tells Rita a version of the truth. Rita encourages her to step out of her fears and into the limelight. She gives Gentry her RPM pin. Later, Gentry tricks a security guard and gets on the stage. She sits in the spot and goes back to the past. Moments later, Mac sits in the same place and travels back in time for her, the woman he secretly loves. Gentry and Mac have traveled to 1995. Now that Gentry is face-to-face with Jett, will she want to return with Mac?

This film isn’t only for country fans. It’s for lovers of the holiday, time travel, and music. Unlike other holiday movies, the title doesn’t give away the plot. It’s a time-bending story that pulls a woman by three types of love. Romantic feelings for Mac, a musical passion for songwriting, and a daughter’s love for her dad. No matter what she chooses, she will make a sacrifice. One question fans will have is how many people remember her from the travels. It feels like everyone had an inside track on bringing her to the past. This movie will make you feel the magic of Christmas while you tear up to Gentry’s song.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

I will deal with you later – Gentry

You know me so well. Food is my love language – Mac
