Three minutes ago, Superman lost his first fight to the Hammer of Boravia. Superman crash-lands in Antarctica and summons Krypto. Krypto pulls Superman to his Fortress of Solitude. His robots scan him and find a slew of injuries. They determine that a dose of sun is what Superman needs. They play a video message from Superman’s parents, Jor-El and Lara, before the treatment to soothe him. Superman can only hear half of the message. His Earth landing corrupted the other half. He imagines that the message instructs him to protect humans. Superman heals and returns to Metropolis to defeat the Hammer. He doesn’t see that Angela followed him. Angela is a genetically enhanced human working for Luthorcorp. She spots Superman’s hideout and runs towards it, but it disappears. Lex Luthor tells Angela to return to headquarters because he can find the Fortress later.
Clark Kent, Superman’s mild-mannered alter ego, returns to The Daily Planet with a smile because his interview with Superman made the front page. His co-worker, reporter Lois Lane, asks how he got another exclusive with the local hero, and Clark responds that they are friends. As they chat, the leader of Boravia has a press conference. He is upset that Superman invaded his country and stopped him from freeing Jarhanpur. He expected more from his American allies.
Lex Luthor meets with U.S. leaders and requests that they use his technology, Planetwatch, to guard the U.S., not Superman. Lex doesn’t believe the alien metahuman is trustworthy. While a few agree with him, the rest disagree because Lex lacks evidence. Lex maintains his composure and exits the meeting. He flies to Antarctica with his crew and forces the Fortress to reveal itself. Lex instructs Angela to handle Superman’s robots, and she makes quick work of them. Then, Angela hacks into the computer system and finds the message from Superman’s parents. She uses her enhanced skills to retrieve the other half of the message. Angela decodes it while Lex can’t contain his grin.
After saving Metropolis with the Justice Gang – Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific, Superman doesn’t get the expected applause. Instead, the witnesses greet with accusatory looks. He looks at the Jumbotron. The news outlets are playing Jor-El and Lara’s message in its entirety. They wanted Kal-El to come to Earth, conquer humans, start a harem, and conceive many children to restart their bloodline. Superman assumes the message is fake, but several sources, including the U.S. government, confirm its authenticity. The Earth turns against Superman, and the U.S. government serves Superman with a warrant. He turns himself in after saying goodbye to Lois. The government determined that their jail system couldn’t hold him. So, they turn Superman over to Lex’s Planetwatch. Can Superman escape and save his reputation?
Director James Gunn has saved the DCEU. This film isn’t an origin story. It assumes that viewers are familiar with Superman’s journey. The opening sequence updates viewers with a one-sentence statement about 3 million years ago, 3 decades ago, 3 months ago, 3 weeks ago, and 3 minutes ago. It prepares the audience to enter Superman’s world at a specific place in time. Lois Lane also knows Clark Kent is Superman, so he doesn’t have to hide himself from her. Her interview with Superman has been a heated debate among comic book fans for years. Who does Superman fight for, and should he be beholden to U.S. laws and treaties? As Superman explains, Lois interrupts with excellent counterpoints. This film has a delightful dose of comedy. With any Gunn film, you must keep an eye on the background. As Lois and Superman have a heartfelt dialogue, the Justice Gang battle is in the window. Even the robots have great one-liners. This picture is visually beautiful. Yes, there’s a lot of CGI, but it doesn’t distract from the story. While IMAX is a solid choice for this movie, 3D isn’t necessary. There is one mid-credit and one post-credit scene. The best description of this film is the fall of Lex Luthor. One thing is for sure: you will laugh out loud at Krypto, feel fear for Jimmy, and cringe in disgust at nanobots. And it’s worth it. Don’t let the genre fool you; this picture is a must-see.

Gemma crusades to reduce children’s exposure to technology and AI safeguards after creating a killer robot to help raise her niece, Cady. During her talks with the Senate, Gemma met another advocate, Christian, and they started dating. She exposes Cady to other activities, like soccer, but Cady wants to be a programmer. Gemma hasn’t turned her back on technology. She and her team have created an exoskeleton to reduce workplace injuries and increase productivity.
Gemma rushes home after picking Cady up from school. She’s late for an investor’s meeting. The exoskeleton glitched and hit the investor. He left before Gemma’s partners, Tess and Cole, could fix it. Tess examines the code and finds extra routines. Someone hacked them. Then, CEO Alton enters Gemma’s home and propositions her. He wants Gemma to work for him and add AI to the human brain. Gemma says no. He leaves but invites her to his company party.
Gemma tucks Cady into bed and relaxes for the evening. The lights flicker, and a strange message comes to the TV, telling her to run. Gemma hears men at her door and calls 911. However, someone hacked the emergency services. Gemma and Cady fight back until one man pulls out a badge. He’s with the FBI.
Army Colonel Tim demands answers from Gemma. A few days ago, Tim sent a robot called AMELIA, Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics & Infiltration Android, to rescue a scientist. However, AMELIA killed him, removed her safeguards, and escaped. Since then, AMELIA has killed everyone who had a hand in her creation. Gemma doesn’t understand why Tim is questioning her. He informs Gemma that her M3GAN program was the foundation for AMELIA. He assumes she created the robot and demands an explanation. During the conversation, Gemma checks her phone’s notifications. It warns her that Tim is clueless and to ignore his threats. Gemma follows the instructions, and Tim leaves with her phone. She calls out to M3GAN, who appears as a hologram. M3GAN lived in the smart home’s system for years, watching them. She knows that AMELIA is coming for Gemma. By M3GAN’s calculations, any attempts to stop AMELIA will result in Cady’s end. M3GAN wants to protect Cady by stopping AMELIA. But first, she needs Gemma to create a body for her. Gemma will do the one thing she swore she never would: create a better M3GAN. Can they put an end to AMELIA?
This sequel is leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The script is funnier, cringier, and more thought-provoking than the first. It allows the audience to think about AI without getting preachy. The writers were careful not to criticize the technology but the humans behind it. The plot provides a twist that the audience doesn’t see coming while allowing Cady to grow. She isn’t a sad girl mourning the loss of her parents. She is an intelligent, strong young lady with a mean streak. The graphics department allowed M3GAN to keep her doll-like face while turning her body into the ultimate killing machine. The film doesn’t have an unnecessary moment. Everything drives the story forward. This film is a laugh riot that delivers a few jump scares and a side of Maxwell you have never heard before.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars
I see you – M3GAN
It’s not pairing. It’s shackles – AMELIA
If you put AI in a human brain, it’s not going to ride shotgun – Gemma
