#QueensOfChristmas – VOD Review

Queens of Christmas – BET+ – 1 hour and 22 minutes

Julia and Doris wake up in a panic next to their husbands. They had a nightmare that Nancy won the neighborhood decorating competition for the tenth year. Doris’s husband, Carl, thanks Doris takes the competition too seriously. It distracts from the season and family. He wants Doris to focus on them. They have financial issues, and Carl works to get his repairer business out of his garage. Julia’s husband, Roosevelt, needs Julia to focus on their bakery. The holiday season hasn’t yielded their expected profit. Roosevelt believes they will lose the bakery if they can’t turn business around soon.

Julia and Doris sort through toys for the church’s toy drive. Bishop Tony doesn’t want to direct the Christmas medley this year. Shocked, Doris loves it because she gets the lead over Julia and Nancy annually. However, their husbands are happy for the break. Later, Julia, Doris, and Nancy learn that a famous director, Patrick St. Thomas, will scout in their small town for his upcoming movie. He will send an invitation in the mail. Then, Thomas’s assistant will watch them anywhere to report back to Thomas’s. He will choose a lead out of the invited people. Doris, Julia, and Nancy get an invitation. Their competition for Queen of Christmas will take an ugly turn.

This movie starts with three women competing for a prize. However, the script covers generational grudges, family expectations, and depictions of African American women in the media. The plot balances a funny script with life lessons that don’t become too preachy. Julia and Doris are fighting a battle that started before they were born. And Julia’s mother keeps stoking the flames. Watching their war trickle down to their daughters, Angela and Vanessa, hurts. Julia and Doris do what their mothers couldn’t: talk. This movie is funny and thought-provoking.
