Terrell wakes up in a panic from a nightmare. His wife, Aisha, can’t take his night terrors. She wants him to work through his issues. Terrell goes into his studio and paints his pain on the canvas. His manager, Janine, admires his work. She wants him to celebrate his recent stellar reviews, but Terrell can’t. Terrell’s son, Jermaine, tells Terrell it’s time for breakfast. Janine exits, and Terrell enjoys family time. Then, he calls his mother, Joyce, to check on her progress. Terrell will move Joyce out of her home and pay for a new place in two days. Joyce is unsure because she has good memories of her house, but Terrell convinces her the move will be good.
Terrell, Aisha, and Jermaine drive to Joyce’s home, but she hasn’t packed. Terrell stands in disbelief, but she tells him it won’t take long. Terrell and Aisha help Joyce box up her things until Terrell hears a looming voice. It’s his father, La’Ron. Terrell grabs his family and heads for the door. Joyce stops Terrell and tells him that La’Ron isn’t the same man. He’s clean. Nevertheless, Terrell refuses to talk to La’Ron. He grabs his family and heads for their hotel room.
Terrell screams through another nightmare. He wakes up and punches a hole in the hotel wall. Aisha comforts Jermaine, who refuses Terrell due to fear. Aisha believes talking to La’Ron will help. Terrell assumed she would first meet La’Ron at La’Ron’s funeral, never face-to-face. He takes advice from Aisha and Joyce and meets with La’Ron. Terrell sets his camera on a tripod and clicks the record button. He asks La’Ron one question: When did you start using?
This movie displays generational pain and healing by asking one pivotal question. Terrell uses his art to express his torment, but it’s not enough. Aisha tries to understand. But she never met La’Ron until now. She encourages Terrell to hear his father out. First, La’Ron talks about his father-son relationship. La’Ron speaks about his father with fondness as Terrell listens in shock. Then, the audience experiences Terrell’s horrors with a drug-addicted father and a loving mother. He recalls the moment that changed him forever. Terrell has difficult conversations and reflects on his parenting style. The movie’s conclusion is honest, gut-wrenching, and heartfelt. It has beautiful artwork and emotional music. The title rings true, and this picture is worth seeing in theaters.
