Mason Pettits always wanted to help people as a child, so he became a lawyer. One year later, he became disenchanted with the predictability of his life and job. So, he left the law and joined the special forces. Now, his life has a purpose until his last mission. His commanding officer, Sebastian, passed his team the dossier of President Juan Venegas, their next target. Mason abseils from the helicopter and watches someone shoot it down. He frees himself from the ropes with back injuries, and half of the team dies. Mason returns to law with his purple heart, wife, and daughter by his side. However, he feels unfulfilled again. Then, Mason’s past walks through the door. Sebastian owns CDI, a security company. He wants to hire Mason to protect an investigative journalist, Claire Wellington. She has an exclusive interview with Juan. Mason immediately says no because Juan is the reason half of his friends are dead. Sebastion offers Mason $20,000, and he agrees.

Claire won a Peabody award but fell to disgrace after people discovered her source lied. Claire admitted that her rush to print clouded her judgment, and she didn’t authenticate the information. So she resigned. Now, Claire does puff pieces for trashy internet magazines. She hopes interviewing the President of Paldonia will reinvigorate her career. Claire walks out of home and meets Mason. He questions her reason for interviewing a dictator. She responds by telling him to do his job and protect her.

Juan meets Claire and Mason on the tarmac. He greets her with a kiss, hug, and selfie while his protection detail searches Mason for weapons. Juan and Claire converse and drink in the car while ignoring Mason in the back seat. Then, the car in front blows up. Mason gets Claire and Juan to safety. Mason calls Sebastian to arrange their extraction. Juan asks to use Mason’s satellite phone. Juan calls his nephew, General Jorge, and lets Jorge know he is safe. After Juan hangs up, he tells Mason that Jorge arranged the attack. The people who want him dead promised to put Jorge in charge because they think Jorge is a manipulatable idiot. Juan wants to travel to a neighboring town to do the interview, but Mason says no. He wants to leave with his client, Claire.

They wait in the clearing until their transport descends. However, two armed mercenaries come out, and the helicopter flies away. Mason shoots the helicopter out of the sky. He and Claire escape through the jungle until they get separated. The two mercenaries follow Claire, but Mason takes one of them out. The other holds a gun to Mason’s head and demands Juan’s location. Juan shoots him. Juan tells Mason that Mason is a pawn in a bigger game. Someone purposely picked Mason to kill Juan and help ignite the coup. That’s why they chose Mason to be Claire’s bodyguard. Mason decides to help Juan and Claire escape the jungle alive, stop the coup, and restart Claire’s career.

The opening scene is interesting because it gives the audience Mason’s life through his eyes. Then, the script gets funny, so you don’t take the shooting and killing too seriously. It’s easy to jump to conclusions, but the script chooses another person to be the puppet master, someone you don’t suspect. Juan is an intriguing character. He lives his life with the motto, ‘Failing to plan is planning to fail.’ He is amusingly charming but extremely intelligent. Sadly, the script uses an unnecessary seduction scene to make the respectable reporter nothing more than a typical vixen. The viewers know Mason loves his wife, so rejecting Claire is pointless. Save this movie for streaming on a slow day.
