Socially awkward Jane takes a break from studying for her LSAT to bake a cake for her best friend, Corrine. Corrine decides to sing karaoke before dinner, so Jane takes the cake with them. Partygoers ask Jane to see her cake at the bar and marvel at its decadence. Corrine asks the bartender for a knife and shares the cake with everyone. Everyone takes one bite and falls in love with Jane. Corrine stands back while Jane becomes the life of the party.

Corrine comes up with an idea to pull Jane out of her shell. They will go to one bar weekly with a different cake for a year. Then, Corrine will judge the cake by its results. They are not testing the taste but the guys. The more guys Jane gets, the better the cake. Jane agrees and starts baking.

After weeks of successful cakes, Corrine and Jane come home to celebrate Jane’s latest conquest and Corrine’s promotion. But Corrine’s head throbs. Jane notes to pick up more potent medication and something for Corrine’s bathroom issues. Then Jane hears a bang and finds Corrine having a seizure. Jane calls Corrine’s parents, and they go to the hospital. Corrine has a brain tumor that requires chemo and radiation. Corrine’s parents want her to live with them during treatment, but Corrine refuses to leave her new job and friends. Jane offers to take care of her best friend. Jane wants to put cake barring on hold, but Corrine makes Jane promise to keep it going. No matter what.

Corrine is a daring wild child but knows when to be responsible. She puts great effort into work but forgets to clean the lint trap. It’s tough to understand how Corrine and Jane became friends until you meet Corrine’s parents. Her father fixes any and everything, and her mother loves to cook. And Corrine’s plan to get Jane to socialize works. Jane finds love, connects with friends, and finds herself. That’s something she hasn’t done before. Jane exists to serve others, not just Corrine but her parents. They want Jane to be a lawyer and make a difference in the world, like them. Jane and Corrine seem like opposites, but they find what they need from each other. This movie makes awkward moments fun and sad ones teachable. They have an honest relationship with fights, laughs, and forgiveness. They call each other out and take accountability for their actions and words. Based on Bars with Cake: Lessons and Recipes from One Year of Trying to Bake My Way to a Boyfriend by Audrey Shulman, this movie is a tear-jerker but displays a friendship worth celebrating (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Oh, be sure to bring cake!
